what do you do with your PC excessive video editing and working with 1GB image files?

Otherwise no, 1-1.5 GB is usually more than sufficient

I'm so far from being a techy guy but check the processor and see how much ram it can actually handle. Just because it has the slots doesn't mean it can utilize that much memory. I had this problem a couple years ago so maybe it's not an issue with new pc's but I bought a 512 stick to double existing ram but my pc could only use like 50% of it.

YARGH! I be hearing that in XP more than a gig is not useful. Not sure if it be true but it's what some plankwalkers told me. Now get those treasure maps drawn up. The good ship Chio Sails in two weeks.

what is your processor? Type and speed. What type of hard drives do you have? IDE? SATA? what speed are they and cache size? More RAM != better performance if there is a bottle neck.

Like I said before 1-1.5 GB is usually enough.

YARGH! Never did see me that Chinwiggler. Perhaps, one day I could make me famous grilled guppy gizzards for that St.Nick.

I have a postgre database server sorting 4 mill records with 4 gigs of ram. The short answer, for desktop computing, no not needed.

For that, you should be fine with 1-1.5GB, 4GB is overkill...you will notice a difference going from 512mb to 1-1.5gb, but less of a difference going from 1.5 to 4gb...

most proccesers are ment to hold so much memory anything else won't make a differ. Bottom line it's to much for a normal CPU

well, since your ?? have been answered, I'm hi jacking this thread since all these geeks are in here now

Is matching ram still necessary? Another problem I had with an old machine was with a 256 stick, I could not put in a 512 next to it. I either had to add a matching 256 or get two 512's...

So, I have a new machine but it only has 512 in it. Could I put a 1G stick in the next slot or do I need to match the 512?

Sounds like you had Rambus RAM before, that type had to be matched. Now a days you can put it whatever as long as the motherboard slot can handle it.

khs != geek...... anymore

You'll never have enough......

Just make sure you buy matching memory sticks in the dual packs. Don't buy them separately.

1 GB is usually more than enough, anything more is really be a waste. Unless you're doing hardcore video editing.
