i'm looking at about $220 a GB DDR PC2700, is that too much? this is for my PC that i'm on right now where i do all my work from etc..

talk to me, i only have 512 in it right now and i want to "pimp my PC" even more ever since i got my chrome plated 400 watt power supply

faggggggggg

khs 02-28-2005 09:43 PM

what do you do with your PC excessive video editing and working with 1GB image files?

Otherwise no, 1-1.5 GB is usually more than sufficient

Spunky 02-28-2005 09:43 PM

Do you download a ton of music?..I have two 40's and I still have tons of room

I'm so far from being a techy guy but check the processor and see how much ram it can actually handle. Just because it has the slots doesn't mean it can utilize that much memory. I had this problem a couple years ago so maybe it's not an issue with new pc's but I bought a 512 stick to double existing ram but my pc could only use like 50% of it.

soon i will be, right now i have all the usual applications open at the same time dreamweaver, photoshop, outlook, wsftp, icq every time i'm on, plus i always have a few IE windows open as well

Sosa 02-28-2005 09:46 PM

I don't think you need anything over 1 gig really

Chio The Pirate 02-28-2005 09:46 PM

YARGH! I be hearing that in XP more than a gig is not useful. Not sure if it be true but it's what some plankwalkers told me. Now get those treasure maps drawn up. The good ship Chio Sails in two weeks.

moltar 02-28-2005 09:50 PM

As a designer, I got 1Gb...when it comes down to serious multitasking there's always room for more! :winkwink:

Spunky 02-28-2005 09:50 PM

Ooops..I misread the question :(

khs 02-28-2005 09:50 PM

what is your processor? Type and speed. What type of hard drives do you have? IDE? SATA? what speed are they and cache size? More RAM != better performance if there is a bottle neck.

Like I said before 1-1.5 GB is usually enough.

Chio The Pirate 02-28-2005 09:52 PM

YARGH! Never did see me that Chinwiggler. Perhaps, one day I could make me famous grilled guppy gizzards for that St.Nick.

BoNgHiTtA 02-28-2005 09:53 PM

I have a postgre database server sorting 4 mill records with 4 gigs of ram. The short answer, for desktop computing, no not needed.

eMonk 02-28-2005 09:55 PM

i remember adding TOO much ram to my last system and it actually made my system run slower... :2 cents:

For that, you should be fine with 1-1.5GB, 4GB is overkill...you will notice a difference going from 512mb to 1-1.5gb, but less of a difference going from 1.5 to 4gb...

Nader 02-28-2005 09:57 PM

most proccesers are ment to hold so much memory anything else won't make a differ. Bottom line it's to much for a normal CPU :2 cents:

very good point. IDE processor is 2.6 i think what i may do is just add another GB and get myself to 1.5 then if i feel i still need more i can always add more

4GB way too much for that, get to 1.5GB and you'll be more than happy.

well, since your ?? have been answered, I'm hi jacking this thread since all these geeks are in here now :winkwink:

Is matching ram still necessary? Another problem I had with an old machine was with a 256 stick, I could not put in a 512 next to it. I either had to add a matching 256 or get two 512's...

So, I have a new machine but it only has 512 in it. Could I put a 1G stick in the next slot or do I need to match the 512?

yellowmenace 02-28-2005 10:21 PM

well...what do you want to do with it? 4 gigs is not alot if you wanna render videos

Sounds like you had Rambus RAM before, that type had to be matched. Now a days you can put it whatever as long as the motherboard slot can handle it.

khs != geek...... anymore

:thumbsup

Yeah, it was a while ago. Thanks. That was the answer I was hoping for.

TheSenator 02-28-2005 10:27 PM

You'll never have enough......

Just make sure you buy matching memory sticks in the dual packs. Don't buy them separately.

jukeboxfrank 02-28-2005 11:05 PM

the page file will grow to 12 gig.

Strife 02-28-2005 11:18 PM

1 GB is usually more than enough, anything more is really be a waste. Unless you're doing hardcore video editing.
