Major EMERGENCY I need HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a major emergency - I had to format C: and I backed up all my files onto drive D

My partner did the format and installed Win2Kpro and now I have a major problem...

Drive D has no volume label and I cannot access it at all.
I got Nortons Utilities but even that won't help - it says the "Drive has no Volume Label would you like to reformat?"

All my sites back up , programs , emails and graphic design work , EVERYTHING except the content is backed up on that drive - and it's the ONLY copy- I dont' want to lose 5 years worth of work...

Pleez can anybody help me??

I always thought that when you format C: that it just doesn't do the C drive, but that it wipes out EEEEEEVVVERYTHING.

Is the D drive a virtual drive? Was it sitting on the harddrive but in a different partition? Or was it a completely different harddrive?

I wish I could actually help you though, but I wouldn't want to wreck it more. With my armchair repairman advice.

It is on a completely seperate drive - on a caddy (or rack - as you yanks call it)

if i were you iŽd reformat c and try to install old OS again.. then iŽd copy all shit to another pc or backup everything! (donŽt you have a CD writer for that stuff?)
whatever you do is DO NOT LISTEN TO WHAT WINDOWS SAYS! DO NOT CHANGE THE LABEL..you might lose a lot of data... go the secure way!
otherwise iŽd go redshoes way and call a repairman regardless how expensive!

You should never trust your backup to a partner who needs a kick in the nutsack.

KittyKat,
I had the same problem when I just added a new drive to winzkpro.
If you go to your win2k control panel and select "administrative tools" and then select "computer management" then select "storage option" here is where you need to be looking. I don't want to tell you what to do next because I never did this with a drive with data only a new drive but atleast here you can see all your drive info and the help file is there.

Hope it helps a little,
BV

Try Partition Magic 6.
It will recognize your drive for sure. Then create a new partition on drive C: and select the option to move all the data from your backup drive to c:.

It will certainly do the trick for you! But you should be very carefull using it, make all the recovery discks, because if you don't and you are not familiar with it, it might permanently destroy all your data.

That's my $0.02!

Better re-check the jumper's on the old drive. And after you do that RE-CHECK them again!!! If it was a master before,,put it in another computer and make it the Master drive again, make sure it's still working.
Then change the jumper and make it a slave.
Leave it in that computer and see if it will works as a slave in another computer.

I would not use Partion Magic and if you don't know or have not used it before DO NOT start now.

The "FIRST" thing is to find out if the drive is still working and has your data.

I hope you did not have the drive plugged in when you installed Win2k (the 1 with all your data).

I have learned the hard way, unplug them and after the new drive is set up then add the old one.

Three time's windows fucked them for me.

Did you change platforms ?
Was it an NT or win98 machine before you
installed Win2Kpro ?

Hi,

I friend of mine had exactly the same problem. You have install Win2K on another HD and goto Administrative Tools -> Computer management and simply add your 'old' HD. Your system allready noticed that the drive is there right? That's good. But you have to add it by hand.
It's probably an Dynamic Disk.

I'm confused by this latest rash of "Help, I'm fucked" threads. Do we just NOT make backups of our stuff anymore? Why would you trust all your hard work to one disk and a buggy OS like MS? Or ANY OS for that matter...?

Not only do I have all my stuff on my main operating drive... but it's all backed up in TRIPLICATE in different methods as well. Hard drive fails? No sweat... restore from the main image. Image is fucked too...? No sweat.... restore from the real-time backup drive.... that thing got jacked TOO!!! No problem.... pop in the disks any copy them back over.

Invest $60 bucks for some decent backup software like PowerQuest, buy a few extra hard disks, a cd burner and a few packs of RW disks.... and you will never lose another single byte of data that you do not specifically delete yourself. You would actually hafta go out of your way and work at it to lose your data.

I would recommend to everybody, buy a Promise FastTrak 100 PCI TX2 card if you are using IDE disks. With this RAID controller you can make a mirror as backup (there are other features as well). From all my disks I have 3 versions. One which I'm working on, another which get mirrored in real time. And a third disk which I bring to my parents each week. So if it might happen that my house burns down (of course I hope this will never happen!) then I always have backup disk of all my computers. Think about it. You can risk to lose your job or invest a couple of thousand dollars (with 1 disk it's much less) and feel save.

Looks like you lost your FAT. You may be able to find a program that will tell you the file type of each file based on the header, that will save you some time.

Do remember that RAID is good ONLY against hardware problems, IT WILL NOT help at all of you have a software problem
