a large part of being successful means not giving away your strategy. there is a thread today where labret talks about why he is successful. I agree almost absolutely with every he said (minus the getting a license to shoot hippies and women). this is exactly how i look at and operate my business. I trust maybe 2 people, outside of my 3 employees. that's it. trust no one.

information that is *only* yours has value. tell everyone and it becomes worthless.

the boards are a fun way to make the long work hours go by, not much more than that ;)

I disagree quiet. I can give out plenty of good info to anyone that wants it, but that doesn't always mean they are going to know what to do with it or even have the capability to use it. I can give out a full scale tutorial on graphics to 100 people. I'm willing to bet that out of that 100, 10 may actually grasp the concept, 5 of those will be somewhat interested for more than 20 minutes, 2 of those will have the ambition to do something about it, and only 1 will actually posses enough talent to put the information to good use.

I don't think information, in & of itself, is something that necessarily needs to be super-safeguarded. This is why we have things like "open source code".... well, it's wide open for everyone to see... but you don't see a very high percentage of the Internet population taking advantage of it.

Amp, I think what quiet meant was NOT giving info away, but his site... I.E his business model..


it's a thing for me to tell people that in order to make a gallery page look good, they have to SELL the page to the user.. make him horny, or SELL the site, so it sounds like a bargain.

or to say cropping the thumbs, and sharpening them is always gonna make 'em look better..

But it's another to tell them exactly WHAT to say, or What combo to do or what design I use that works great..

let's say for example (something that is not the case, but to show what I mean) I would do avs... and everytime I finish my pages with a thumbnail next to the words "ain't she good!" I go and make 200% more sales than when I don't...

or, let's say just putting a blinking shit next to it... gives me better sales.

well, if I go and say to everyone : do that... well, next thing you know, you get tons of people doing it, and therefore no longer unique... I.E less sales to me...


that is only a simple example...

But take quiet...

I assume he has a Tight model...

say he has SOMETHING on his sites that most people don't have...

an idea, or a concept not exploited by most...

he knows where to get the traffic... I.E he maybe buys Quality SE traffic Cheap, where not many people know they can buy from there.. I.E say he buys at 3¢ a click, and returns 1$ a click...
Say he does plenty of AVS sites to feed those, but with just the right stuff for his business model... making it highly profitable..


NOW... should he tell a lot of people, here's what would happen.

1- someone would copy his CENTER model... I.e they'd do a paysite or something like what he does using the same key factors he was alone to use...

that will result in surfers getting used to that, I.E less people joining, or staying not as they used to (since there's more to see somewhere else)

2- the 3¢ a click SE traffic he used to buy... was returning 1$ a click.. HIGHLY profitable... but now, since more are there, it'll only return say 50¢... but STILL a good deal... so before... investing say 3,000$ and getting 100,000$ a month... but now, the same 3,000$ but say 50,000$

3- Now that more people have the paysite idea of Quiet, they will look into that traffic source they can get, and MAYBE they'll stumble upon his magical 3:50 SE source... But, if he is to tell where he gets his SE traffic to many, it won't be only a FEW to stumble upon it, but way
more...

I.e, laws of Offer/Demand will make the link sell not at 3¢, but maybe 25¢...

so, if he was investing 3000$ a month and getting 50,000$ from it, now he'd be investing 25,000$ and getting 50,000$

4- now that people took interest in him and know what paysites he run, they can go and search the AVS list and see his model... so here again, he would loose his edge...

Now, he might be the first using that model, which would leave him over everyone else, with more control.... BUT... With more and more people coming, it'll saturate his biz... and to keep the same income, he'll have to work MORE to keep himself at the top... cuz don't fool yourself... Surfers are more and more demanding because they can get more and more..

Now, I'm not saying talking with people is a bad thing...

but you gotta choose them wizely..

I know myself, and I know that I would be the type of guy I'd tell lots of thing to myself... (uh, sounds wrong!)

I mean, whenever I hear things, I don't tell them to many people...

when I hear concepts and ideas I deem profitable, my mouth is shut...

and when someone shoot the shit with me and gets to know me better and tells me stuff he asks me not to tell a soul, well, I never tell a soul, not even a partner that could benefit from it...


Because, if you do have a good model... and you partner with 3-4 trustworthy people... that can help bring traffic, and make it even better..

you might grow the profits 10 fold if done right, if no leaks..

Certainly Mag... I can agree with all of that. Trade secrets specifically pertaining to your business strategy & tactics must be safeguarded at all costs. However, continuing in my agreement, I would like to reemphasize that as you have stated, general principles & theorems in fact, SHOULD be openly discussed I believe. It affords us the opportunity to not only pass on information and knowledge, as well as create further business connections for future growth, but also to more clearly illustrate any potential weaknesses and hence, possible methods of improvement. Idea sharing is a positive thing. I would certainly never give away my best, hard-earned tricks of the trade to any but the most trusted & qualified associates. That is what the "learning curve" is for.

The "Learning Curve", I feel, holds many more valuable aspects than the simple face value of the actual learning. Because there is time & effort involved, I believe someone who has commited themselves & is dedicated enough to follow something through to completion, and ultimately, it's final enlightenment, has gained more than mere knowledge of the task at hand. They have gained pride in the knowledge that their efforts have been duly rewarded, intellectual maturity from facing down a daunting task, confidence by knowing that they are, indeed, capable of completing something they have set their mind to, which of course, leads to better self esteem and smarter business strategies & practices. They have gained so much more than the person who is simply told "crop this image here", and blindly follow any path put before them by the puppetmasters who do, in fact, often times send them in directions specifically targeted for dismissal.

This is why I know the things that I know today. I have traveled long and far to earn them. I do not speak from my proverbial ass, unless I so choose. (which, as is well documented, I do quite frequently.) The information is out there to be had. But only the individual can choose to seek it out and put it to use. My downfall, however, is that I often empathize to strongly with the uneducated, having worn that shirt myself for many years, and tend to put a little too much trust into people that do not deserve nor respect it. This, more than anything, has been the bane of my existence and my undoing, even as I type this.

not sure why my post would have caused any confusion. by info, of course i mean info pertinent to my traffic/paysites/business model. not information in general! this is an adult webmaster forum - not a philosophy forum, read and posted by people (i would hope) that are interested in becoming successful in this arena -> ie there is a certain context to my post, which you obviously picked up. no absolute definitions required

i've been doing 100 hour weeks for 4 and a half years now. i have zero debt, and have over 1 m net retained. i'll do over 2 m revenue this year. for an industry that is (apparently) falling apart for many people, this is (by far) my best year ever. with a sweet growth curve. knowledge (equating to an edge), is to a large extent, the difference between success and failure in this biz. i won't be giving away mine.

although confusion is fine too

amp - the difference about strategy and tactic. definitely. wouldn't bet my bank account on anything though

hey, I'll be the first to help people amp...

so basically, I'm the one that'll agree to all people would say..

because, yes, I have been introduced in this biz because One soul out there gave me free hosting in exchange of a top banner to his site when I started in '98. He took the time to explain to me the ropes. I'll always be thankful for that.

but, as much info you can find on the boards, the true knowledge and success will be achieved By your own attempts and talking with people directly. that's my opinion. I read the boards, sucked at doing galleries, until I started talking with people and gathering info here and there, and putting that to a test.

now, galleries are a tricky biz, everyone can find your stuff and copy it... but I'm sitll trying not to show my galleries all over the boards BECAUSE they WILL get copied by the newbie category you mention that just copy without any more thoughts... Not taking ideas here and there to implement with their own creation, but blatent theft
