I'm learning on Red Hat 9 and Fedora. I hear that there's going to be a push on SUSE, and it's supposed to be fairly user friendly. We'll see.
The problem with linux right now is that it's not too user friendly. You have to have a good understanding of it just to be able to install a lot of applications. The terminal codes that you have to enter are pretty cryptic. Most people just look at the whole thing, get confused and frustrated and go back to Windows or Mac. Windows and Mac have the market they do because there isn't too much of a learning curve; just point and click. I think that if Linux can get to a reasonable level of usability with just "point and click" technology, they're really going to have a huge break through. As it is, a lot of businesses are switching to Linux because of it's cost, reliability, and that the same hardware you would use with Windows will take you a lot farther on Linux. My laptop only has an 850Mhz processor and 128mB RAM, yet it runs just as well has my desktop with Windows, which uses a 2.2Ghz process or and 256mB RAM. So that makes hardware almost half the price due to more efficient use of resources (Windows is SUCH a resource pig).

I want to work with FreeBSD, but it's not easy to setup on your own. I need an experienced individual to help me get it installed. From there, it'll just be a matter of using what I've learned to do in the terminal.
BTW, is there much demand for a BASH scriptor? I'm not a BASH scriptor yet, but I'm trying to decide how much focus I want to put into that area of my learning.

I have windows and fedora on my desktop. I would probably switch it to linux entirely except that if I put linux on my laptop I will lose the function in all of my usb ports.

i have used slackware as my primary desktop for a couple of years now and it's great, clean, simple, fast, stable, secure.
to mr thumbs: linux on the desktop is growing fast, there is a _massive_ community out there now... i was reading the other day that cisco has moved 2000 of its engineers to linux workstations, and ibm has just dumped another $100M or something like that into linux on the desktop. |

I've become a huge fan of CentOS. It has the advantages of Red Hat Enterprise without the cost. Fedora Cores are good, but have a very short lifespan with the upgrade plans, etc. and now Red hat 9 is just plain old. CentOS is the way to go if you want a long-term and reliable option.

Mandrake has an incredibly easy installation process and will get you into a desktop GUI from the start. So you can point and click around and get used to it a little bit easier.
I've also used slackware which installs easily as well, but as far as I know, doesn't auto install the Xwindows stuff. It may have updated since last time I looked at it. |

Linux as a desktop OS that will destroy Microsoft and Windows XP was bullshit to start off with.
All hype. Linux is a miserable failure, the KDE group do nothing but duplicate the Windows interface and they do a bad job at it. Fuck you Linux zealots, you lose. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

suse/slackware was good back in the day
suse is super bloated now... my favs now are, redhat9 for servers, fedora core 3 for desktops/programming, and gentoo is bad ass if you have days to configure it from scratch ;-)
