tungsten 02-20-2005 10:08 PM

slackware/redhat are both good

tonkagunner 02-20-2005 10:09 PM

Mandrake is the easiest

I'm learning on Red Hat 9 and Fedora. I hear that there's going to be a push on SUSE, and it's supposed to be fairly user friendly. We'll see.

The problem with linux right now is that it's not too user friendly. You have to have a good understanding of it just to be able to install a lot of applications. The terminal codes that you have to enter are pretty cryptic. Most people just look at the whole thing, get confused and frustrated and go back to Windows or Mac. Windows and Mac have the market they do because there isn't too much of a learning curve; just point and click. I think that if Linux can get to a reasonable level of usability with just "point and click" technology, they're really going to have a huge break through.

As it is, a lot of businesses are switching to Linux because of it's cost, reliability, and that the same hardware you would use with Windows will take you a lot farther on Linux. My laptop only has an 850Mhz processor and 128mB RAM, yet it runs just as well has my desktop with Windows, which uses a 2.2Ghz process or and 256mB RAM. So that makes hardware almost half the price due to more efficient use of resources (Windows is SUCH a resource pig).

en1 02-20-2005 10:13 PM

gentoo and debian!

the alchemist 02-20-2005 10:15 PM

What? There's something else besides Debian? :1orglaugh

Seriously... slackware is good too, but debian > * :thumbsup

Abyss_Vee 02-20-2005 10:20 PM

i want to install it on one of my other PC's just to mess around with it,, which one is the best for new users?

CET 02-20-2005 10:21 PM

I want to work with FreeBSD, but it's not easy to setup on your own. I need an experienced individual to help me get it installed. From there, it'll just be a matter of using what I've learned to do in the terminal.

BTW, is there much demand for a BASH scriptor? I'm not a BASH scriptor yet, but I'm trying to decide how much focus I want to put into that area of my learning.

SinisterStudios 02-20-2005 10:22 PM

DEBIAN!!!! Highly Recommend it

Some say SUSE, some say Fedora, some say Mandrake (I disagree), some say Yellow Dog. Go here and check out their forums to find out more.

dselect > work

edit: dselect < work (after some thought)

modF 02-20-2005 10:30 PM

FreeBSD is the bomb. I've been using it for years since switching off linux and not looking back. Drop me a line if you need some help.

Dude installing it is easy. Just follow the handbook (on freebsd.org). I did it myself when I never used FreeBSD before and I didn't have one single problem at all.

Zerof8 02-21-2005 01:12 AM

I have windows and fedora on my desktop. I would probably switch it to linux entirely except that if I put linux on my laptop I will lose the function in all of my usb ports.

Rorschach 02-21-2005 02:34 AM

i have used slackware as my primary desktop for a couple of years now and it's great, clean, simple, fast, stable, secure.

to mr thumbs:
linux on the desktop is growing fast, there is a _massive_ community out there now... i was reading the other day that cisco has moved 2000 of its engineers to linux workstations, and ibm has just dumped another $100M or something like that into linux on the desktop.

KarlZimm 02-21-2005 03:04 AM

I've become a huge fan of CentOS. It has the advantages of Red Hat Enterprise without the cost. Fedora Cores are good, but have a very short lifespan with the upgrade plans, etc. and now Red hat 9 is just plain old. CentOS is the way to go if you want a long-term and reliable option.

IceMaster 02-21-2005 05:42 AM

Slackware in my house and red hat enterprise 3 in my dedicated servers.

aleck 02-21-2005 06:07 AM

no linux on desktop. all servers are powered with RedHat, mostly Ent.3.

pudcat 02-21-2005 06:07 AM

debian :thumbsup

Fuckin Bill 02-21-2005 06:19 AM

Mandrake has an incredibly easy installation process and will get you into a desktop GUI from the start. So you can point and click around and get used to it a little bit easier.

I've also used slackware which installs easily as well, but as far as I know, doesn't auto install the Xwindows stuff. It may have updated since last time I looked at it.

Abyss_Vee 02-21-2005 10:07 AM

im gonna install fedora right now to test it out, ive installed mandrake before and it was extremely easy

MickeyG 02-21-2005 10:19 AM

fedora is a good place to start out, its free and theres plenty of support out there.

personally i use redhat 7-9 for alot of my servers and fedora on a few others. I've had a few freebsd servers as well

Linspire is the easiest of the Linux distros.

http://www.linspire.com/

Mandrake is easy, but it is buggy, you will end up pulling your hair out.

nmcog 02-21-2005 10:50 AM

Linux as a desktop OS that will destroy Microsoft and Windows XP was bullshit to start off with.

All hype.

Linux is a miserable failure, the KDE group do nothing but duplicate the Windows interface and they do a bad job at it.

Fuck you Linux zealots, you lose.

NelsonN 02-21-2005 04:28 PM

Hey nmcog,

Just because you only use your brain to fart with, doesn't mean the rest of us do.

HiVelocity 02-23-2005 05:42 PM

CentOS has been working very well for us.

jayme_ 02-23-2005 05:44 PM

gentoo 2.6.11-rc1-love1

naitirps 02-23-2005 05:45 PM

suse/slackware was good back in the day

suse is super bloated now...

my favs now are,
redhat9 for servers, fedora core 3 for desktops/programming, and gentoo is bad ass if you have days to configure it from scratch ;-)

A prime example of someone who, lacking anything insightful to say, just tries to say something VERY VERY LOUD. :1orglaugh

Hmmm... what kind of laptop are you using? Every laptop in my house has linux on it, none of them have problems with USB ports, or anything else.

naitirps 02-23-2005 06:55 PM

i put fedora core 3 on my tablet pc... it was a challenge getting most of the stuff to work, but all in all it is 99% fully functional (the sd-card slot is the only thing not working since its proprietary to toshiba :Oh crap )

using a pen in gnome rocks! :)
