Should my host know if my site is down for 12 hours?

I have 4 servers with a company and every once and a while this one goes down. It limps for hours until I catch it. Maybe they catch it too but today it was down for 12 hours. Shouldn't they have something that says this server is not doing anything?

yep it was not monitored and they are fixing it. Sort of would have been cool to know that the first time I caught it and asked what was up.

Any time if ever our servers go down our technical guy gets a email sent to him on his phone as well as his regular email box. Our hosting company also calls us. If your hosting company isn't doing that for you then it's obvious they don't care about your business.

i haven't found a host yet that monitors my boxes as carefully as i monitor them.

and it would be great if they did.

and seems easy to do, shit if i can do it, and i'm no geek, why can't they?

really makes me mad when my serversalive software pages me and i have to call me host and tell him my box is down.

and yes it has happened at the big name hosts.

spend the $50 a year for siteuptime.com and have 5 min monitoring with a text message to your cell phone if a server goes down.

Works for me. And if I have to do this too much they can find a new client. I reember when I was pricing before a 4 server client is pretty much accpeted anywhere.

Your host should be monitoring their own servers, yes, but in the end, you should be monitoring your own site as well. Your site being down for 12 hours is just as much your fault as it is theirs. Or somewhere around 70%-them 30%-you.

The one who cares about your business the most is you. If you don't take enough time to check your site once in 12 hours, why do you expect them to do it?

Not saying it excuses them in any way, but you need to be on top of your own stuff as well.

How was your server "Down"?
Was it dead? Apache Stopped? MySQL broke? Please explain exactly the circumstances so we can better see what services stopped performing and tell you how to better monitor your server service by service, as well as item by item (Disk space? Process Load?)

Call me up, 619-227-8845 and lets chat.

my host pulls 1k every 5 seconds and gets paged if there is something wrong, which thankfully is pretty rare

My host monitors and almost instantly detects and corrects server and internal network problems. If a search engine spider comes visiting and your site is down, strike one... And, you only get so many.

well, being server person I hope you can tell by the first post I am not a server person. On one site which is where I noticed it. It serves 700 pages an hour or so and it was serving 5-10. That total server does maybe 2-3 times that on all the sites on there so even if they all were limping I consider that down. He rebooted it. The monitoring for that server had never been turned on. I am supposed to get confirmation that this is being done today.
I don't really trade much traffic and what I do is years long exchanges so this si not soemthing I have to keep an eye on. BUT I do pay them to keep an eye on it and they dropped the ball.

12 hours? FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask for compensation (like a free month) and I would also start looking for a new place for the servers..

You need to setup an offsite alert service or have one made custom like I did.

If any of my sites are offline for more than 2 mins it emails, IM's, and can even call a cell.

12 hours????!!!!! I can't even imagine how much money you lost!

No, it wasnt us who were down. I was trying to help him monitor his services better by asking specifics as to how it was "Down". Joel must have replied at the same time.... he selling potential future customer, me, replying to add some technical help into the mix.....
:-)

Anyhow, buy whatsupgold for your own piece of mind, OR host with a company who does it for you (like we do)... :-)

Regardless, it seems you have it under control with your host, but ask them about a credit for their mistake in never setting it up in the first place.
:-)

the problem is the host should have very good monitoring.

because sometimes individual domains may be up in a ping test, but actually be bogged down by perl processes or MySQL or php errors and you can't tell it---but your pages aren't loading fast enough for your surfers---and you wonder why your sales are off---lots of time your hardware ain't performing as it should.

for the webmaster who is always working on a broadband connection sometimes it is impossible to gauge your server's actual performance---do a test with dialup speeds---this is where you can make or break many signups---even dialup surfers won't wait, they will only join a fast website, and they are the majority of surfers in the world.

i would like to find a reliable FAST host who has the sophistication to actually monitor individual server performance in real time.

it seems like this would be a no-brainer, and a really strong selling tool for new clients.

if i was running a webhost i would put system-wide real time diagnostics on every box and have a kid monitoring it 24/7.

the WTF do i know.

We don't depend strictly on our host for uptime monitoring - I was speaking to the quality of my host.

As far as server monitoring the more outside checking you do the better. There's a program called Servers Alive which is a handy utility if you want to run dekstop monitors and many offsite services.

Your host SHOOD monitor your sites. At isprime, if my sites are down more than 5 minutes, my shot is fixed. I even had some 500 error, they edited a script of mine without me knowing, and back up... love it

Holy shit!

I'd be livid, personally. No matter what sort of downtime, the company should monitor the servers at the very least and let you know what's going on if you absolutely have to be down for any amount of time.

Damn I love TechieMedia.

This server is not with any of the copmpanies mentioned in this thread. No need to out them until I see what we can do. So far no response to if the long term situation has been resolved.

Thanks Ivy/Fris...our work speaks for itself...we are not resellers like most of the hosts posting here lately...we run and maintain our own network and IP's which is VITAL to your site's success...why put your biz in the hands of a host that does not have control of their own network???

Contact me if you want professional hosting since 1996 at affordable pricing.

Lots of things can go wrong. If you're a businessman, hire a server guy. You can't do all things at the same time efficiently. Don't get me wrong, you're still human.

How about getting set up on a failover system? 2 servers and auto failover?
Call us up if you want this. We can set up a 2 server auto failover system for you. We also monitor everything 24/7 automatically.
