HQ and Damputate...do you think I am not aware of what you are talking about? You guys think this is about money. ROTFLMAO. This is not about money. Look, some people, like yourselves, obviously don't care about principles. Others, like myself, do. It is the principle of the thing. But it is a lot more than that, too.

Cybersquatting has the potential to eventually be the downfall of the adult internet. I don't have the time to go into it in real detail right now, but if you keep on top of the news, you will find out how seriously the FTC is taking cybersquatting. Normally, when a surfer does a typo and ends up on a cybersquatter's site, he gets stuck in a plethora of popups. The complaints pouring into the FTC have been mushrooming, and the FTC is now on a crusade to shut down Cybersquatters. Cybersquatting has very serious implications that can definitely affect every single adult webmaster.

HQ 10-25-2001 10:45 AM

Zilla,

it's more about principle to me too... if $0.12/day is going to make or break me, i'm in the wrong biz!

someone stealing 12 cents from me doesn't piss me off, but stealing my traffic that is suppose to go to my site, does piss me off!

"Cybersquatting has very serious implications that can definitely affect every single adult webmaster."

i agree 100%.

HQ 10-25-2001 10:46 AM

Robert, if you know Shap, send him an email and tell me about this thread. i think he has the right to know.

(snipped for brevity)

Granted that Zilla... but, (if we are gonna use the guy up there as the example), those domains are pointed to PornoGround. (the particular sponsor isn't all that important for our purposes here today)... Which is basically, a legit sponsor. Why is it so bad for the surfer to get a popup through being redirected by his bad typing skills versus getting the same popup by clicking the advertised sponsors link or banner? It's a blind program, so the sponsors rules are not being broken by sending redirect traffic... and since when did we start cradling the surfers like babies anyway?

They know full well they're gonna see a few popups when they're surfin' for porn. Shit, even MSN and other non-porn sites have popups in the surfers face now. It's called advertising. Maybe it's a little sneaky, for sure, but so is stapling cigarette posters at a four foot eye level.

I'm not tryin' to get into a big bitch session here Zilla, but I honestly don't really see why this is such a big deal. I could understand it if he registered "Thumbedzilla" or something and made a big green TGP out of it... but that's clearly not the case here... how many different combinations of typos can there be? Probably alot... some poor surfer will always be hitting a bad key every now and then, and there's no way you're ever gonna be able to cover every combination.

Maybe I'm just not seeing a bigger picture or something, but if it's the surfer's seeing popups that is the big issue, then I don't think it really has anything to do with the squatter... because most paysite sponsors use popups in one form or another. So if that's the issue, maybe the paysites are the evil ones.

But I do think that when we start trying to make everything so rosy and sweet for the surfers so they can't ever possibly have something to complain about, we are dead in the water at that point.

Surfers Utopia:
No advertising whatsoever, no popups, no banners, no 404 pages, never down, and always 100% free on demand.

Not my idea of buyin' groceries.

Man, I don't want to start trouble, but if this is about your view of principles, then why bring it up to anyone else? Everybody views principles differently, and everyone bases those principles on different premise. My principles say, "who gives a fuck about somebody who bought a domain similar to mine?" I know cyber-squatting goes farther than this, and if you bought kidstoys.com and point it to porn.com, then that crosses different lines. But what we're dealing with here is not that at all.

We have somebody getting a domain that was available, and trying to make a couple bucks on it of careless people. They're not bombarding them with pop-ups, and not giving them something in they weren't already expecting (ie: porn).

I do not know if you watch the news, or if you realize what is going on with this communication/information frenzy of the last decade, or if you have studied any business courses in your life. But if you have done the three above, you will recognize that the way to make the most money and go the farthest, is to focus on follow through and plan for tomorrow. I know it sucks when somebody makes a little dough on your ideas, or on your work, I've been there...I've been pissed off...I've planned retaliation. Then I calm down, and realize the best way to combat it is simply to beat them. Have better execution on my end. If you want to puss out and waste time helping kill our freedoms of speech, more power to you. If you want to get on with life and be success ful...then "stop crying."

What a wacky thread...

It seems everyone who is defending squatters, or at least claiming to not understand the big picture are also the ones with nothing to lose. If you had a large site then you would be a target and it would matter to you.

I wouldn't care if someone used squatted domain to sell potato chips and never sold one bag. As Zilla said, it's the principal. I fuckin' hate anyone who goes about this business the unethical way. If you have to resort to such tactics then you don't deserve to succeed.

I find someone stealing my gallery designs almost everyday and now that I have begun investigating my domains.... well, let's just say I'm really pissed now.

Amputate Your Head 10-25-2001 11:59 AM

Unethical? The entire industry is swimming in immorality and lack of ethics. Is a blind link ethical? Is a missing page redirection ethical? Is a freehost skimming (stealing) someone's hard earned traffic ethical? Is promoting a site using advertisements of chicks with donkeys ethical?

This is all just freakin' ridiculous. I'm not defending shitty practices, but for christ's sake... take a look around at where we work. It ain't the Center for Morality & Ethics. You can't possibly sit there and tell me you are honestly surprised by someone registering a typo domain and making some beer money off it.

You mean you just became a target??

Slick 10-25-2001 12:03 PM

Fuck, he has slickbikini.com done twice on there, pretty damn sneaky.

Sure, he might not be making a whole hell of a lot of money there, BUT it's the thought that counts. It's sorta like when sites copy other sites, he's stealing something that others have worked to build.

He's making money off of visitors that are trying to get to MY site. Sure, it's not a lot of money, but the way that he's making money is because of ME, that's pretty lame.

On-top 10-25-2001 12:07 PM

I know what you mean Slick, but at the same time, he bought a domain that you didn't..and you probably never would have if he didn't. He's making money where none would have existed.

If you're good, you'll always be copied. That's life...the mere fact that you run a TGP or a free site means you're copying someone before you. If you're good, you'll win in the end.

Most of your examples are unethical from the surfers stand point. I don't consider pop ups and banners of donkey dicks unethical. They are a part of the adult landscape. My gripe is with a webmaster who knowingly fucks another webmaster out of hard earned money. Trust me, if I did it to you, you would be pissed !!

And....? This is the very reason we have many places that will sell a hamburger to BP for lunch. Someone was successful, and someone else capitalized on it. Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Jack-In-The-Crack, Carls Jr..... Walmart, K-Mart, Target, Walgreens.... it's called COMPETITION. Think Mickey D's was happy about Burger King starting up? I know it sucks to have people competing for the same dollar... but that's life bro... and unless you got a piece of paper with a legal trademark on it for the name, there really ain't much anyone can do about it. So no point gettin' all angry and shit... just let it go and come have a burger with me & bp... http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif

Well, admittedly, I probably wouldn;t be all that crazy about it either... but what the hell am I gonna do? If a design is stolen I have a legal copyright issue. Aside from that, registering a domain similar to mine or yours is done every minute of the day... what am I supposed to do about it?

The Truth 10-25-2001 12:18 PM

Come on Amp - that argument is ridiculous.

Of course there's competition and that's a good thing. Zilla, Snake, PK, are all in competition but they don't steal directly.

If Burger King opened up and had a sandwich called a Big Wac and it had Sekret Sawce on it their would be a problem, but they open up with their own ideas and their own creations.

That's the difference.

Amputate Your Head,

although you are bringing up good points, i think you are missing the big picture! http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

re: "it's called COMPETITION."

competition is me starting up hqdailynude.com after slick started up slickbikini.com...

competition is not me starting up slickbikinis.com and pointing it to a sponsor after slick started up slickbikini.com...

see the difference?

also, slick wouldn't have bought his typos... true. i wouldn't have either. but he wouldn't have HAD to if they always pointed to "site not found" error.

most importantly is NOT the popups and surfer ethics. most important is where the money comes from:

it's money made from me, slick, zilla, etc... not legit money made from a 'true' competitor.

(believe me, slick and i have never gotten pissed off at a new free site popping up! fuck, slick helps most newbies out like crazy! he's helped me out in more ways than one.)

anyway, those surfers are 'ours'. that's why that ophrawinfrey.com guy got sued for millions. doesn't this just make sense to you?

Amputate Your Head 10-25-2001 12:29 PM

Just remember, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".

You should be smiling at the fact that someone thought your site / domain was worthy of imitation. It only gives you more credibility as the real-deal. Nobody's registering meaningless names. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif

I belive that he is a true competitor. Just because he's faceless doesn't mean he's not your competition. Look at blind shipping middlemen. Dude in Iowa wants to buy a load of lumber. Dude in Georgia buys it from dude in Oregon. Dude in Oregon ships it straight to dude in Iowa and neither Oregon or Iowa dude has any idea that dude in Georgia just made a killing on it. "Blind Billing". It's done every day. The guy is faceless, yet is still Oregon dudes competition because Oregon dude just got fucked out of the extra markup that Georgia dude slapped on it for Iowa dude. And the only one's that have any clue are Georgia dude, and me... the driver.

So... I disagree... you don't necessarily always see your competition, let alone be on good business terms with him.

dewpoint 10-25-2001 12:42 PM

What if a person is getting search engine traffic by using an existing site's name in it's keywords or links. An example would be if you do a search on Altavista for Persian Kitty. The #1 site to come up is http://www.dr-feelgood.com/ and not http://www.persiankitty.com

Any thoughts on this type of practice?

boneprone 10-25-2001 12:42 PM

Is Jack In the Motha fuckin Box any good?

Amputate Your Head 10-25-2001 12:44 PM

Let me ask you this then...

I got an idea to do a site. I wanted to do a tgp site. I thought for a while while smoking out on the balcony, and got a pretty good idea of how I wanted it to look. So, based on my idea... I went looking for a domain to match the theme. The one I wanted was already taken. "pornmatrix.com"... but "porn-matrix.com" was still available. So I registered it and built my site. Does this make me a cybersquatter? If so, why? And if not...why? What's the difference?

Right on, Amp.

HQ, these guys are not taking hits from you, they are taking themt from Microsoft http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif These people who typed in these domains would have got a "DNS not found" search box in IE if these people didn't buy the different domain. Sure, they might have tried a different variation, and ended up at your site, but they probably will anyways. It's just not that complicated.

dewpoint, I don't think it's a thing to promote, nor have I ever done that. But given the level of the internet right now, I think it's pretty much a given that it can't be totally prevented. So if you rely that much on SE, then you will find a way to win there. Also, what if you sell Persian Kitties? Where do you draw the line?

It's all grey, man. You can't count on people following the rules, if the rules aren't actually "taboo." Instead, FIGURE out what they are GOING to do, and plan to make money off of them that way. When you realize what I mean, you'll be a happy man.

Who's looking out for Toho Corp? http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

(Godzilla / Thumbzilla) Both are giant lizards. Both end in "zilla".

I assume the reason sites like this are allowed to exist is because of the parody law that protects sites like bertisevil.com?

Anyway, how does one determine if they are registering a domain name in bad faith? I was searching for domain names and I discovered a real cool one that involves adding an "s" to the end of another one that is already taken.

Since the url that is already taken is simply redirecting to an affiliate site, would this be considered bad faith on my part if I registered the name with the added "s"?

I can see getting sued by doing it to established web sites like thumbzilla, but what about sites that aren't making any good use of their domain? And what about sites that have simply bought the domains with the hopes of selling them?

Jack Dare 10-25-2001 06:45 PM

It's all about who spends the time and money creating a brand name. If you ad an "s" and build that to a brand while the site without the "s" is doing nothing, it's your brand. You have to use it to have the right to it.

With regard to fast food joints, yes there are many burger joint, but you don't see any MacDonalds, do you? No, too close to the original brand. The Truth said it well.

Pop-ups have nothing to do with it imho, it's the fact that someone is searching for YOUR site and ends up at another trying to copy your brand. I get many people actually typing in my domains in search engine! lol, Imaging how many use a typo in the URL?? Yes these people are naive, but I still want them to cum to my site http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif
