I'm getting my Christmas shopping done early this year. What do you think would be a better purchase for a 9 year old boy? (The 9 year old is my son, not me. Honestly!)

(Although I will probably be using it almost as much as him.)

I like the fact that the PS2 can play all the old Playstation games because I can get a whole bunch of those old ones from the bargain bin cheap. But the XBox looks like better hardware to me. Just seen a show about it on that TechTV channel.

Any opinions? I think the Xbox comes out next week. I don't want to waste money on another expensive dust collector.

my brother is about 13 years, and he got a ps2, however since that machine is marketed to 20-35 year olds, all the games are to hard for him to play.

if i had to choose between a ps2 and xbox, i would go with the ps2 anyday, it rocks!!!

My wife bought a sega system on Maui when she was just a kid. They made three games, and the whole system turned into Sega-Genisis.

She was so pissed off.

I'm not saying Xbox is going to change inro something else, but I would definitely wait to buy it. My PS2 KICKS ASS!!!!

I love it. I also love new technology. So, I'm hoping Xbox does well, but I would still wait to buy it.

But I would say BIT SYSTEM (yeah, Nintendo 8 Bits compatible), I loved this one too.

You all know my opinion on this matter. The X-Box is gonna DOMINATE THE MARKET !

Sure, the PS2 has some nice games coming out this holiday season like Metal Gear Solid 2, but it just doesn't have the power of the X-Box.

As far as the Gamecube goes. I think that it's gonna surive, but it's not gonna be the big thing, it just doesn't have the power. Plus people are kinda disgusted with the way that the N64 went. Sure, people say "It's all about the games", but having a system that can make the games look better always helps, he he he.

If you look at the companies on the X-Box boat, you'll know that there's gonna be TONS of great games for it, it's NOT gonna end up like a 3DO, you're talking about Microsoft here.

Maybe it might be a good thing to hint to your son about it though. If he's been following what's going on. If he's lived on a Nintendo and N64 growing up, then maybe the Gamecube would be the thing for him.

IF you're gonna buy a PS2, maybe you should wait a bit on it, rumor has it that it's gonna drop in price with the new systems out there.

Super Nintendo 16 bits was very nice too (Super Mario Kart rocks!). I Like Super Mario Kart for Nintendo 64 too, but I think super nintendo version was better, hehe

The thing is that Sega is playing a silent part in helping with the X-Box. Just like when the Dreamcast came out, which operating system was on it ? WINDOWS, so they already have experience in the video game market from their work with Sega.

I think that they're gonna rule. I guess that time will tell though.

I spend all night playing Grant Theft Auto at a friends place and I can tell you: IT FUCKING ROCKS. Í'm going to buy a ps2 just for that game... You can be a policeman, taxidriver, sniper, you can beat people up on the streets and do drive by's!

The game play is better then anything I've seen before and it's all 3D!

Ps2 is good. Gran turismo 3 makes it worthwile, I know it's already an 'old' game, but it still rocks.

You can't sponsor Microsoft, they make enough money by having a computer 'monopoly'.
Let's not help them bring the same shitty crashing system to the consoles. I have enough misery with windows. I wouldn't want my son to cry night after night when he has played some game for a long time and is very excited about the graphics and such and then the piece of shit crashes...

Perhaps I've eaten too many mushrooms and licked too many frogs, but I wouldn't touch xbox even with a long stick.

Just my humble opinion.

Go with the XBOX... it's backed by Microsoft so you know it's not going to turn into a dust collector. Microsoft can throw so much money at it to make quality games.

Games will be slightly better graphics on xbox.
The amount and quality of games should be similar.
They both have dvd players.
Hardware in xbox is better, I think they have internet support.
Both play DVDs.

It's almost a toss up, but I think XBOX has the edge.

Ok here is my 2 cents:

I am a PC gaming junky and was really excited when I heard about the Xbox. It is better and faster then PS2 but it is a NEWBIE to the market. It was released to a Toys R Us in the States and CRASHED so many times that a Microsoft technician had to come and fix it.

I would go for the PS2 if it would be for you. But you said that this is for your kid so I recommend the Nintendo GameCube. It is GREAT for kids with games like Zelda, Mario, Donkey Kong and so on...

PS2 and XBOX are for the 16+ crowd with games like GTA3, Tony Hawk, and lots of killing shooting games.

Wait for the GameCube your kid will thank you.

people talk about the GameCube like if its only for kids, is not! there are some great games coming out. I hated the N64 but I think they have finally learned and moved on to the CD format, they will dominate the market. Check out the resident evil game that is coming out for GC, it fucking rox!

This is what I do as a day job and I like all 3 consoles. They are all gonna make me rich

PS2 has the largest game library now and is a lot of fun. By the way no one mentioned the problems with PS2 burn out. I would get a warranty with yours if you chose it.

GameCube is doing ok in Japan but not as good as PS2. The main thing is the availability of games for the consoles. Game Cube has the least now but their titles wil get better.

X-box is going to do well no matter what people think of microsoft. Hands down it is the most powerfull gaming machine in existence. Games are going to be great.

Think about this for a bit too. The first few months of games for both GC and Z-box will be lackluster. Give them about 6 months and we will all be blown away with what games look like.

One reason why X-box will do well is that the gaming software companies have more experience writing for the X-box hardware. It is easier and less expensive to produce for x-box too.

Also Microsoft is throwing half a billion into advertising.

Nintendo will always be in the console market because they make kids games. Their systems have always been made for this reason. So, if you have a 9 year old, it's probably the best.

But, for the technically superior system - there's no question - it's the XBox. I think it's going to have tons of games, as well - any developer is going to realize that with a 1/2 billion $ of advertising, of which only MS can do, the thing is going to sell. Being based off of directx, PC games are going to be easily ported to it. Given this huge user base of both the PC and a significant (if not the majority) of the console market, anyone would want to develope their shit it - and they will... so they are going to have tons of games, and the system itself will be almost a generation ahead of the gamecube.

The PS2 seems to me to be the best for the type of games that are made specifically for it - like GT3 - I almost want one just for that game... so I guess it's the games that really matter.
