Sooooo, you want to come to South Africa, huh?

I'm Bulgarian but I've been living in South Africa since 1996 and I believe that this is one of the most beautiful countries in the world (I've been to/visited more than 20 countries). So here are some tips:

- if you're planning on going to Kruger National Park you have to take some malaria pills, you can find them in any pharmacy but the thing is you have to start taking them a week in advance

- if you want to visit some of the game reserves you better call them and book
here's a South African search engine, it shouldn't be difficult to find some contact info:
http://www.aardvark.co.za

- Johannesburg/Joburg is a very dangerous place, but also my fav when it comes to night life

- if you're in the Gauteng area /Johannesburg, Pretoria/ some of the places to visit are:
Sun City
Lion Park
Gold Reef City

- crime rate is very high, so stay away from bad areas, and avoid 'exploring' if you're not with a South African friend or someone that knows the area

- South African English:
'howzit' - informal greeting, more or less eaual to the American 'how are you doing'
'robot' = traffic light
don't use the word 'napkin', use 'serviette' instead
if you're an Amereican and ask for a glass of water pronounce the word 'water' slowly otherwise you might stay thirsty lol

- last but not least I hope you don't have a hayfever, I've been sneezing like mad for the last few days

Wel, that's abou it ;)

Don't you have to take a bunch of shots before you go to Africa too? I was checking out the Abercrombie and Kent tours a couple of weeks ago, and I was under the impression that there were a battery of shots plus the malaria pills that you had to take.

Before my trip to Mozambique I consulted a doctor and he recommended pills that you start taking a week in advance, during your stay in Mozambique (or other malaria zone), and two weeks after you come back. There're many different pills and there mioght be some shots too.

I've REALLY been wanting to go to both South Africa and Ghana. But I just had to have some blood drawn the other day and I cried like a little bitch. I hate needles. If the trip involves a lot of shots, then I'm not so sure I'll make it.

I don't think you have to take any shots prior coming to South Africa. The only malaria zone that I know of is Kruger Naitonal Park. If you go to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban etc you have nothing to worry about.

And BVF, thanks for the hosted galleries ;)

I lived there for over 40 years. Been to Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, Transkei, Angola, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania etc and it is all beautiful. Never took malaria tablets because they don't stop you getting malaria. The best is to use either the spray or roll-on mosquito repellents.

The one to watch for is the Tsetse fly in Botswana because one in a million can pass on sleeping sickness and then your fucked. Malaria they can treat but sleeping sickness is another thing.

A great trip is up to the Okanvango swamps in Botswana and you make camp for the night wherever you stop. You hear the lions and hyenas prowling around your camp at night. If you camp at the edge of the water there you will have the hippo's stomping thru the bush at night

Strangely enough that's exaclty what a friend of mine told me, he said that the tablets not only dont't stop you from getting malaria, but also 'delay' the symptoms which means the time you feel the symptoms it might be too late.

Antonio your friend is correct. I would prefer to know I have it than have the symptons supressed and when it hits you then your in bad shape. One of my friends ended up with cerbrelum (spelling) and that is the worst. How long are you staying there? Have you driven the garden route yet?

I've been here since 1996. Although I'm 35 years old I mostly enjoy the city life, the only reason I saw a bit of wild life is my parents' visit last year ;) Crime is the only thing that worries me, so I'm not sure that I'm going to live here forever, but if I have to move to another country it'd be either another African country or somewhere in Latin Amereca, I simply love the weather.

Sounds like you worked out a few countries as preferences - they sound like good choices!

I'd never go back to what some regard as civilisation, (I'm in Latin America now) - the people are very friendly and genuine, the weather is claimed to be by some mag ratings as best in the world and the landscape, well... outta this world :-) Tho I'd think the landscape in Africa is even more amazing.
