Tsunami warnings were cancelled over concern for tourist industry

Idiots..

http://www.bluelemur.com/index.php?p=518

Just minutes after the earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday morning, Thailand?s foremost meteorological experts were sitting together in a crisis meeting. But they decided not to warn about the tsunami ?out of courtesy to the tourist industry,? writes the Thailand daily newspaper The Nation.

The experts got the news around 8:00 am on Sunday morning local time. An hour later, the first massive wave struck. But the experts started to discuss the economic impacts when they discussed if a tsunami warning should be issued.

The primary argument against such a warning was that there had not been any floods in 300 years. Also, the experts believed the Indonesian island Sumatra would be a ?cushion? for the southern coast of Thailand. The experts also had bad information; they thought the tremor was 8.1. A similar earthquake occurred in the same area in 2002 with no flooding at all.

One expert The Nation spoke with also noted that the department had only four earthquake experts among their 900-strong meteorological department. A second told The Nation that a tsunami warning was discussed but that because of the risk, they opted not to issue a warning.

?We finally decided not to do anything because the tourist season was in full swing,? the source said. ?The hotels were 100 percent booked. What if we issued a warning, which would have led to an evacuation, and nothing had happened. What would be the outcome? The tourist industry would be immediately hurt. Our department would not be able to endure a lawsuit.?

Even if a warning had been issued it wouldnt of made much of a difference banking all the blame on them is pointless, people do not even listen to that shit really.

I dunno know about you folks but...
C-mon if there was a huge earthquake miles away and you were at a beach resort would you think a tsunami was going to come? I would believe a tsunami is comming for sure and got the fuck away.

Common sense things.

Though common sense would have been to issue one anyways one can not blame it all on 4 guys sitting in a room many people wuld have still died regardless.

So you think that people would've been dumb enough to stay on the beach after a tsunami warning? That warning would've saved a lot of people. We wouldn't have the numbers we have today.

Yes I do.

People are inherently stupid. History has proven it time and time again.

All them people that died felt the earthquake.
They didnt know a tsunami was going to come?

What makes you think a warning would have made a fuck all of a difference?

One hour would not have been enough time to evacuate most people anyway. And I bet a lot of people further inland would go to the beach just out of curiousity to see the waves. Just look at the videos from Thailand, you can see crowds of people allowing the waves to get closer and closer and they don't run until the last second.

Sure, if warnings would have went out some people would have been saved but I bet the dealth toll would still be very high.

What a fucking bad example..

Tsunamis = BIG FUCKING WAVE.

Don't fucking stay on the beach or near the coast line.

It's not like you don't know where the fucking TSUNAMI is going to hit..

Here is another example:

The Ozone layer is breaking apart an an alraming rate, mass extinctions can occur as the earth temperatures are going to fail within the next 500 years maybe 1000 years who knows but the OZONE is eroding!

So...
What do people do? They do not change a thing, the human race is subject to immediate gratifications and narrow sited behavior's.

Well, I do get your point, because I posted a message about the upcoming imminent flu pandemic and no one gave a shit about it.. I have my tamiflu ready. It might be this year or the next, but it will come.

Anyway, even if the warning would've saved 100 people, that's still better than nothing.

True even a 100 or even 1 would have made a difference.

But clearly ignorance and naivity is what takes people over enmasse.
the "It wont happen to me" attitude kills millions every year concerning senseless death.
That running of a yellow light, the crossing a street...
The grabbing a hair dryer out of a wet sink etc...

No, the warning should have gone out. But people are so stupid that I bet most of them would not have left without all the their valuables so many would have not gotten out. Plus stupid people further inland would have traveled to the beach to see the waves and would have gotten caught up in them.

Just look a the videos. People were watching the waves but many were not even running away.

Well, not really. 99% of people know the risks involved of grabbing a hair dryer out of a wet sink.

Not everyone knows what a TSUNAMI is.. The lifeguards, police, whatever.. would've been informed about it and evacuate the beach.

It's not like everyone is connected to the internet and watch the seismologic activity on a beach..

That's because they didn't get a warning.. Most people don't even know what a TSUNAMI is.. Look, they even had to explain it with cool 3d animations on the news because most people are clueless about it..

If they had a warning, authorities would have evacuated the entire area in the fastest time possible.. No.. "Um.. That's a big wave, should I leave or not" questions..

If a Tsunami warning was issued, which it should have -it would have given people a CHOICE of whether to evacuate or to stick around and see the 'big waves'.

I bet the death toll could have been at least halfed.

I agree. After four hurricanes in 6 weeks, and four evacuations in the same time period, I still think it's better to be safe than sorry.

First of all FUCK YOU ............are you jealous that Sleazy and I happen to be friends? Second of all where did I sound angry at you?? I was just stating something that is starting to happen, with people trying to lay the blame..... If the warning had gone out and the disaster didnt happen the fragile economyof the region would be devestated. Unfortunately it did, damned if you do damned if you dont.

i took it to be common knowledge, that when the sea suddenly recedes - it means a tidal wave is coming

maybe it's cause i live in California that I thought that ^

that's too bad, but how much warning could have been given with just an hour's notice ?

If any of you have spent any real time in Thailand you are not shocked by this news. I can totally see the Thais doing something like that. That is a land that makes no sense and just when you think your onto something that you can understand, you peel through the other side of it like an onion and you are right back where you started. Confused.

"Safety" is a word they do not understand. They understand money, rice, temples and Buddha... that's about it.

But hey, it's cheap and they have great food and whores.

Sure, if warnings would have went out some people would have been saved but I bet the dealth toll would still be very high.
The smart people would of head for higher ground while the idiots (me included) would be out there with a video camera in hand. Though I would of at least been smart enough to be on a rooftop. I know enough about the ocean to know when you feel a tremor or quake in a coastal area, you head for high ground. You don't stand on the beach and wonder why the water is disappearing.

i probably woul dhave been on the beach as well, as nobody really expects a 30 foot wave to come at you 500 mph... until you see it on the horizon and its too late. just a lot of unlucky people.

In all fairness to them, according to the article, they had been given bad information. Sure, an 8.1 is still rather large, but it's 10 times less powerful than an eartquake measuring 9.1 on the richter scale. So they figured everyone was safe. Let's expand it a little. Had they been given a warning that an earthquake of 7.0 occured, do you think they should have told people to evacuate? How about 6.0? Where do you draw the line. As far as they were concerned, a warning would have been totally unrequired and would have only served to damage the tourist industry and cost the tourism areas a fuckload of money.

Perhaps if they had been given accurate information, then they would have given a warning.

I agree with you Alien, I don't think it would've done much. Only the native's that lived there probably would've taken the warning seriously. I don't feel that the tourist's would've done much. With the way the tourists and some of the natives were just sitting there filming it, I don't think they would've evacuated.

"Thailand?s foremost meteorological experts were sitting together in a crisis meeting."

Look, they had a crisis meeting because they thought it was an 8.1, it was still dangerous at that point. We are not talking about the fact that it could've been a 7.0 or a 6.0.
