Hell I've never been west of the Mississippi River. Once again, no desire too,
2 things:
1) You just proved the original post's point: the fact that you have no desire to leave your country (or state) is likely because you've been led to believe you live in the greatest place on earth ... not to mention your comment about food and water standards elsewhere being inferior is the kind of ignorance the post was talking about.

(In fact, based on the remark about the "big one" hitting CA as your prime reason for not going there to visit suggests a paranoid delusional trait you may want to get looked at)

However for an American to decide they want to travel on the cheap it takes a much bigger committment to visit other countries continents.

$1,000's even.

I've done a lot of US travel and have lived in many different states and just my brief excursions about the US have broadened my thinking to some degree. I can imagine travelling the world would just be astounding. But once again it can definitely be cost prohibitive for us.
Thank you.

Sure, some Euro trash can graduate highschool and hitchhike across Europe and be an International traveler. Lots of high school graduates here travel across the states for the same money, and experience more cultures.

Anyone that doesn't think that different states don't have extremely different cultures has never traveled the USA. And I don't mean in a jet.

Your figures are wrong.. I can recall when 3 million Americans went to Europe ... Then we gave it back to you ...So you can have a culture. Then 25 years later 40 million Americans went to Europe.. Then we gave it back to you again... So you and your fucked up friends can piss and moan about Americans and the dollar.

Nothing new in this thread although some of the people arguing against Battuss make for amusing reading as they prove his point more with every post.

There's two or three in this thread that need to realise fox news and even CNN give a VERY skewed perspective on just about everything. GatorB especially, do yourself a favour and stop believing everything the TV tells you in the US (or any country for that matter just more so in the US). You'll be a better person for it

Exactly, it takes a long time and a lot of money to get anywhere from Australia and we are using a weaker currency as well. Australia is one of the world's biggest travelling nations.

Most Americans have no interest in international travel because they have been brainwashed from an early age to believe that the rest of the world has nothing to offer and that the USA is number one in everything.

I've backpacked across every continent and spent more than a year on the road out of the last seven.

Anyone who says that America has as many unique cultures as Europe does is just showing their ignorance. Anyone who has done more than a couple of month in Europe knows this is bullshit.

I travelled from Italy to Germany on a night train last week and those two countries are as different as night and day.

How would you know? Are you American? Have you ever been here? I have traveled 22 different countries and never met an Aussie, SA, Swede, or Candian I did not like. I lived in a Kibbutz for year with people from around the world. I did notice the Dutch, Swiss, and fins are prestigious assholes or momma?s boys. The pimp hand solved that problem.

Big cities are a relatively bad comparison asTokyo and New york probably are quite alike as well.
But I do agree to some extent.
A small town in austria is probably similar to a small town in france, but there is the language differences as well as cultural differences that are larger than 2 small towns in the usa. Also despite Europes small size, each country has a massive amount of history of their own, which most us states can't claim (atleast for such long period). This is purely my opinion though, since I haven't really travelled much inside the usa, nor have I seen many small towns in different states, but I'm presuming this.

I've lived in a small french town for a year, and it is completely different from a similar sized town in italy, but the EURO has brought europe closer together from the time I travelled europe in mid 90's.

First Off, Take the smug, I have traveled and seen other countries so I am "enlightened" and shove it up your collective ass. Anyone with an attitude that they are superior to any othe human being is about as far from enlightened as one can get.

The quote of 1% of the population is far to low a guess - I would bet it is closer to 10%, which by the way that 10% of US population EXCEEDS the entire population of most of the countries in Europe.

Of course Europeans are more likely to visit countries other than their own, you can see everything there is to see in most countries in a couple weeks, by the time they are of age they have already seen everything there is in their country. They have to leave if they want to see anything new.

Cost is a big part of it. Even if the price was the same - less American can afford it, they use their money on useful things like Doctor Bills, College Education (you know the things that are free in most of Europe) for their kids, also their time is used working. Americans get less vacation time, and have much longer work weeks than Europeans.

Come down from your high horse, and get over yourself, traveling the would does not make you enlightened, does not give you any more insite in other cultures than can be achived with Google, and it sure as hell does not make you any better than someone that chooses to do what they want to do.

All it means is you have gone to a bunch of places.

You pledge allegience to the flag every morning in school; proceed to learn about Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Paul Revere, Lewis and Clark, Slavery, the US Civil War, how approxiately a dozen Americans defeated the entire English army, then Hitlers army. And that about sums up all the world history you'll get, at least until college (university), if you attend.

Those with more worldly experience may have visited the 3rd world country below them, Mexico, or (what they consider) the 51st State above them, Canada. Some may consider Hawaii an international destination.

I would guess less than 1% of Americans have gone any further.

I have met a scary number of adults here who think that England is still ruled by the Queen and that the USA is the only country with 'Freedom' or 'Democracy' or toilet paper. They do try to give you that impression.

Call it patriotism or propaganda, but this country is more fanatically in love with itself than any other. It really puts itself on a pedastool. Flags on everything. Declarations of 'Land of the Free, Home of the Brave', 'These Colors Don't Run', and other silly solgans on billboards. Businesses even whore out 911 in radio commercials, using patriotism to push product. Politicans compete with eachother on how many times they can incorporate the phrase 'Greatest Nation On Earth' into their speeches. It would border on bizarre if you weren't so used to it.

So of course, with all that around them, a lot of people believe it.

But all the flag-waving and rhetoric would be no more than annoying, if not for the fact that it is blinding the population to abuses of power. America is not a facist regime Yet. I don't know that it ever could be. But they are certainly putting the tools in place to make that a possibility. And that's far more significant than the particular individual who happens to take office.
to repeat it makes you funny, to believe it makes you an idiot.

It's NOT a "sweeping generalisan" when there is a pattern of people you live with for a year.

You are so far out in left field I do not know where to begin. You mean to suggest that you can learn and appreciate the world's cultures just as well by surfing the 'net as you can by going there?

You correct that traveling the world doesn't make you better but I have been to Russia, Turkey, Fiji, Australia and too many other places to mention. I have learned a LOT. I am far more knowledgeable about the world, it's customs, people and culture and I think I am the better for it - not better than anyone else, but better "informed" than I would be hadn't I left my home.

As for the rest of your post please, tell me you are not this ignorant - it's early in the morning, you've got the flu, you were just joking .. any excuse will do, but this response is so completely baseless and ignorant I have trouble imagining someone with the competence to turn on a pc and type on a keyboard could have wrote it.

I find that people hang their hat on being well travelled when their hat would otherwise fall to the ground looking for an accomplishment. (with a few exceptions)

Okay, instead of another argumentative post how about this:

The world is an incredible, magnificent place and I pity any soul on his/her deathbed who hasn't seen their fare share of it. If you can still move on your own then I absolutely encourage you to visit a totally different culture than your own (and I don't mean California). And more so, when you are there avoid the Holiday Inn, don't bug the locals asking for the nearest McDonalds, and for god's sakes don't gripe when the tv doesn't pick up Monday Night Football and whine when you realize it's not like your home town. Maybe, you may actually enjoy yourself by trying something new.

(okay, in hindsight that may be a little argumentative...)

One of the main reasons "WE" Americans are not that interested in other countries and cultures is because we are the most diverse country on the planet. The US will take the tired, poor, and unwanted from all YOUR countries. Also it pounded in our head daily to be patient with others immigrant cultures. My high school alone was taught in 14 different languages. Please don?t call us Ignorant of other cultures because ALL Americans come from around the globe.

I disagree with the premise that Americans think the rest of the world has nothing to offer.

A Harris Poll asked "If you could spend a vacation in any country in the world outside the United States, and you would not have to worry about the cost, what one country would you choose?" Only 7% said they had no desire to travel abroad. (Australia was the top choice).

So there, you're wrong. Because Harris says so.

Sigwhore? Jealous that I get paid for my sig? (..or do I get paid?)

Yeah, it *IS* a sweeping generalization. You have met what, almost a dozen finns and you boldly claimed, and let me quote " I did notice the Dutch, Swiss, and fins are prestigious assholes or momma?s boys".. so YOU based YOUR opinion on a few dozen people at most...then you claim others are idiots.
Fucking retard. If you're trying to be funny and act like an idiot, you're doing a top notch job. If not, I feel bad for you.

If I were you I'd go away and register a new nick since this one is now labeled as ignorant asshole. Congrats.

This thread is awesome. I finally see everything from 2 perspectives and all I can say is the haters are obviously so blinded by their hate they will argue ANYTHING. Even if they do sound like a bumbling retard.

What point? That YOU judge whole nations based on a few people, yet feel anger when they do the same to you?
