I'm looking to buy a laptop and maybe a couple of PC's before years end.....laptop for personal use of course and the PC's for doing grunt work like ripping DVD's and rendering video and uploading shit without tying up my main workstation.

Dell seems to have some pretty good prices but are there better deals out there to be had?

You can build your own for slightly cheaper. But, you won't save much, and you'll have to spend a huge amount of time reasearching compatibility issues between motherboards, video cards, driver versions, etc. It's not worth it IMHO. I'd rather let Dell do all that for me and simply deliver something that is stable out of the box.

From now on, every PC I buy will be a Dell.

Very true, I just made a PC with a barebone kits from TigerDirect. It runs pretty good, but I only saved $100 on a Dell special deal. And of course, no customer support since it's my creation. Nevertheless, if you technically inclined and are not a tech-tard, making your own would be cheaper, plus it's fun (at least for me it was

Well a fully functional PC for $499 seems like a great deal to me (even though to add stuff on can be a bit pricey)

i have had problems with my dell laptop. i would get a mac. I hear they tend to have less problems.

I have has 2 Dell computers so far and both have served me well. Get a Dell and see how it works out for you.

Dell is a solid brand. If you wanted to build a PC for your grunt work you could put in exactly what you wanted for the jobs you're going to do and then go el cheapo on the rest of the parts. That's the nice thing about building.

That really wouldn't do me alot of good since I don't have a Mac on my desk at the office and I want to run the same applications on both the laptop and the PC and just sync up the work between them both.

How much in US dollars is 419cdn?

That one doesn't have a monitor....or a modem, no video card, no dvd-rom, no sound card.....would be kind of hard to rip DVD's and render video on that machine.

I use a Dell 8300 desktop and a Dell Inspiron 8600 notebook as two of my main pc's to edit and render video and do all kinds of other work and they have been great for me. You might wanna check the Dell 8400 for a capable new desktop.

I've built every PC that I have owned and never had any problems.. You don't need a huge amount of time to research things. Unless you're very computer illiterate then buying a prebuilt system is the better option. To top it of I don't get stuck with ONBOARD junk (which is why most Dell's and others cost less)

onboard stuff was made to be used JUST IN CASE. Not as a permanent sollution but with the prebuilt shit these days, unless you specify and pay a little more, you'll get stuck with either onboard video or sound or ethernet... In many case, all 3 at once. Personally, I prefer to build my own.

NCIX rocks. A couple months back I order a shit load of parts to build my PC from them.. Got it fast, all in working order and to top it of they have a price match feature so if you find it cheaper somewhere else they will match that price. I price matched every part that I bought and saved a couple hundred bucks.

If you look, there is an onboard video card, NIC, sound. It's the " ASROCK P4I45GV S478 845GV MATX DDR 3PCI ATA100 VIDEO SOUND LAN MOTHERBOARD". If you click the little blue question mark beside the motherboard item, it will show you blown up info for it.

You can get a DVD writer for about $90Cdn ($65US).

And the Dell machine isn't exactly a monster. The $499 model is the budget model, not the Uber Elite model.

Sometimes, dell pcs can be even cheaper then building your own. You just have to watch out for the deals, and know your prices before hand.
