Is "yahoo" a good domain name? Hardly... yet it's the premier domain name. Are "Amazon" or "Ebay" excellent domain names? Nope.

The name combined with marketing (branding) will make or break a domain. There are many good domains put to good use like "Match", but most aren't and even though they're top level domains, they're not popular or well known.

Like I said before: YES, OBVIOUSLY due to simple supply/demand rules a great domain can get some serious $$$ for it. HOWEVER, it does not mean it will necessarily have a profitable service/product running on/through it.

Definitely. It's a combination. Also, I would prefer to own short, simple, generic, easily recognizable names to build from. It's better (if you're willing to put in the time and effort in branding it) but it's not necessary.

I don't think this is always true. A GREAT domain also comes with GREAT expectations from your audience. At men.com people (I'd assume) expect to find an excellent site with lots of content, less banners, and quality design and concept.

With less-than-great domains they don't have that feeling and will be more patient with your developing business
