I'll tell you one thing I never realized how sensitive writers are about their work.

If you say one thing about editing parts of something they've written they really get wigged out.

No one can estimate that. I have yet to see official numbers for Rent.com as far as registered members, partners, etc. are concerned.

You'll be able to get those when they release their quarterly financials.

I couldn't believe InterActiveCorp listed Match.com's subscriber base in their quarterlies, but it was. 997,000 paying members subscribed. Do the math on that load at $24.95 each a month.

I love reading annual reports. I have at least 10 in the bathroom at any given time. I'm reading eBay's these days. Interesting facts about the PayPal operation (fraud, etc.)

I'm getting sick of this stock lately. Nothing interesting going on. They have very nice "internet properties" tho. Hopefully 2005 will bring them back to the mid 30s.

They paid $50M for Match.com.

Match.com was sold for $8 million in 1997 to Cendant, a Connecticut consumer services company. (A year and a half later, Cendant sold it to Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch for $50 million.) All Kremen got was $50,000 and a lifetime account on the site - his login is "The Founder."

Who cares what they paid? It could have been $15 or 1.5m. It is a combination of a stong domain, a strong business and some strong people that make a multi milliion dollars corp..

This is the post that got me started on all this tonight.

Ebay just paid $415 million for a company that brings in $40 million a year. Sounds like bad business to me.

And we wonder why the dot com bubble burst. "

domains dont make the site - the site does.

I agree completely.

Is "yahoo" a good domain name? Hardly... yet it's the premier domain name. Are "Amazon" or "Ebay" excellent domain names? Nope.

The name combined with marketing (branding) will make or break a domain. There are many good domains put to good use like "Match", but most aren't and even though they're top level domains, they're not popular or well known.

It even applies to the real world, where a good name is more important than it is in the online world.

Is "McDonald's" a good name for a burger joint? Hardly...

Like I said before: YES, OBVIOUSLY due to simple supply/demand rules a great domain can get some serious $$$ for it. HOWEVER, it does not mean it will necessarily have a profitable service/product running on/through it.

Well, if you develop a good niche website for London Rentals and it catches on, eBay.co.uk might actually buy you too. Then people would say "fuck, LRent.com is a brilliant name", because it will automatically be associated with the real brand/niche of "London Rentals".

Definitely. It's a combination. Also, I would prefer to own short, simple, generic, easily recognizable names to build from. It's better (if you're willing to put in the time and effort in branding it) but it's not necessary.

One could list many examples where simple names work. Like Match.com. We could list just as many that aren't even words like Ampland, Yahoo, or Friendster that have attained more success than 99% of the generic names.

Both the domain and it's marketing are important factors. A domain like MyGayDad.com isn't going to do well as a Teen site. It's a fuzzy arena sometimes. We must admit that there are also poor domains out there like ThisIsAGreatDomain.com which in all likelihood won't work because they're too long and obtuse.

I don't think this is always true. A GREAT domain also comes with GREAT expectations from your audience. At men.com people (I'd assume) expect to find an excellent site with lots of content, less banners, and quality design and concept.

With less-than-great domains they don't have that feeling and will be more patient with your developing business Just my

Many OK-domains work just as good: JDate, UDate, AmericanSingles...

Brandability. You preach this yourself. Your above statement doesn't follow suit.

How you think the purchase of rent.com is due solely to its "great domain" is completely beyond me. The domain was only part of it. The BRANDING is what gave it true value.

Where did you get that idea? I never said anything negative about it in any of my posts.

domains dont make the site - the site does.
You're right partially... promotion also makes the site.
