Well, I'm sure he has his business plan figured out and he will definitely make money out of it. I agree that there's potential to do it differently and make even more We chose a different path. Instead of spending big $$ on domains, we simply spent big BRAIN on a killer technology that I honestly do not know how people live without it So who needs the best domain in the world when Wired Magazine already shows interest in being the first to write about it?

Domains ,domains, domains

Everyone thinks they know the value of a domain there is so many opinions its crazy.

There is so many companies that paid $8-$35 for a domain and are major companies now. The 3 top travel sites is a good example Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity. Did they pay millions for a domain name?

So many people build a business around a domain which is wrong in my mind. Get your business plan ready and build the site and get everything perfect, then find a name. Customers go to your site because of your service and what you have to offer they dont care about the name.

men.com was bought and then the site was built and it still isn't finished. Do you wipe your ass before you shit?

i do agree anything over a several thousand dollars is a waste for a domain name.

And in KRL's case he has sat on men.com for too long, but im sure if he has the money to buy it he has enough to make it a profitable site in the future so i will not critisize.

What EBAY bought is a 40million a year profit site which means they get make their investment in ten years. But with some creative tweaking they can make it back in just a few. A domain wasnt bought here, a 40million dollar a year business with great potential to grow, thats what was bought

Not even that. They bought their first step into the online real estate market. $40M a year in revenue is just a bonus I bet Rent.com also has a very loyal customer base that will be happy to now become part of the eBay family. Next they will add p2p rentals (okay, sublets) and take over the world!

Might as well throw in my opinion as well...

The sale of Rent.com for $415 million bears no similarities to the dot.com boom of the 90's. To those who don't remember, this was a period when companies were sold for lavish amounts, based soley on their connection to the up and coming internet craze. Many of them didn't even have a product developed, or even a solid business plan..just an idea. But their connection to the internet made investors swarm on them like bears to honey.

rent.com, on the other hand. is a fully developed company, with a very strong network of alliances. Sure, it's on the net, but the value of the company lies in it's profitability and the alliance network mentioned previously.

And, as far as price goes, although there are a huge number of other factors involved, it is common practice to determine a companies present value based on current revenue times a base of 10 years.

Further, a good investment of this type can dramatically increase the value of the purchasing company's stocks, therefore inflating the value of the purchase beyond the actual purchase price.

Or, the whole decision may have been made in eBay's CEO's bath tub, while he pulled on his pecker and hummed to Conway Twitty...

I disagree. Sure, domain names are powerful in the sense of branding, but I don't think it played a big role in this transaction. eBay is not in the domain business They are WAY past that stage. Fortunately for Rent.com, they not only have a great domain, but are also very promising financially.

You need to look beyond the domain. Although there are 50 other apartment-search websites, Rent.com is undoubtly the market leader. All the other services, when compared to Rent.com, are pretty much useless. The only real competitor is apartments.com.

It just happened to be that eBay chose Rent.com over all the others. It could have been their financial figures, relationship with the management team, etc.

But I don't think Meg Whitman said to the board: "guys, it's a 4-character domain, WE MUST GET A HOLD OF IT! $415 MILLION IS GOOD FOR YOU?!"

OBVIOUSLY it was easier for Rent.com to gain popularity over sites with domains such as FindAnApartmentNow.com or GreatApartments4RENT.com.

Like I said before, a domain name brings you attention, but only a good innovative service/product will bring the retention you need to hit it big.

You've got Porno.com. God knows how much you paid for it ($1.5M I'd assume?) So people type it in, what, 1000 times a day? I bet none of them comes back! EVER! All they get right now is a screen that reminds them the spyware that took over their computer last month True, your domain does have a value, and you could probably sell it for $3M with no problems these days. I'm glad you're finally doing something with it, and I hope to see it live soon. With a great service/product you could be sitting on a cash cow that generates $1M+ a year pre-tax.

You've got everything wrong on this.

You don't need a great domain to make a great site.

But you do need a great domain to make a site great.

Amazon wasn't a great domain until it was branded as one.

Brandability. You preach this yourself. Your above statement doesn't follow suit.

How you think the purchase of rent.com is due solely to its "great domain" is completely beyond me. The domain was only part of it. The BRANDING is what gave it true value.

And we wonder why the dot com bubble burst.
Ya Ebay executives are clueless they have no idea how to make money on the net. They should have just bought a mustang or 3

We're just having fun AZ. I know darn well you don't need fancy domains to pop a hit on the Net.

Think about how much that 40m a year will increase when Ebay promotes it and ties it into there network. Maybe combine it in ebay listings, maybe combine it with craigslist. etc listings ?

Anyone that thinks Ebay is stupid and has no plan for the rent.com business and domain will most likely be driving a mustang for the rest of there lives..

Also, don't forget the free publicity they're getting in every major newspaper in the world and every TV news program.

LOL, how ironic CNN talking about it on TV as I'm typing this.

Craigslist does this all the time.

This is something that will only work when integrated into a powerhouse such as eBay, as you'll be running into many risks involved in this type of operation (i.e. how do you know the guy from Paris is not a terrorist?). eBay's Feedback system along with PayPal history will allow them to better screen the users.

Also, don't forget the free publicity they're getting in every major newspaper in the world and every TV news program.

LOL, how ironic CNN talking about it on TV as I'm typing this.

Same thing happened with men.com and look at it now.

Yup im sure you hit the nail on the head with this one.

Craigs and Ebay and Rent.com its got to be a huge % of there plan to turn rent.com into a 100m+ a year company.

I dont have or claim to have any experience or knowlege on how massive corporations are run and why they do things. However it is EXTREMELY funny to me to see people post about how they got ripped off.
