The Law of Truly Large Numbers

I was just reading about this, its pretty cool. It basically explains about odds and stuff, for example, did you know that there are around 16 million other people on the planet that share the same birthday as you? When you're in Vegas, and you're at the hotel with say 50,000 other people, there will be about 134 people with the same birthday as you. Unless of course you're born on leap year, then there will only be like 34 people with the same birthday. Anyway, this shit is pretty interesting. Now I have something else interesting for you, I am going to sleep.

Well, according to the law of truly large numbers, you don't know enough people, that should be reason enough to make the trip to Vegas for Internext.

Either that, or you know a lot of people, but you just don't know when everyones birthday is.

Actually, the odds of that would be very easy to find, on average. Obviously a place like Hawaii or another state with a large military population would have higher odds, but I think overall you could just find the numbers on how many people have served in battle over the last 60 or so years, find out how many people have died in all the battles in those 60 years while fighting the army from the country those people are from, and so on and etc. I am too tired to type anymore, but you get the idea.

Yeah, but there's probably more straight up murderers on the street than ex military. Good point though and cool post.

Wrong on all accounts. In a group of 30 people, assuming birthdays are distributed equally through the year (which they aren't) chances of 1 birthday being shared by at least 2 of them is ~70%. In a group of 23, the chance is ~23%.

However, the chance of someone in a group of 30 sharing your specific birthday is obviously far smaller.

Wrong. There are seasonal variations, so some birthdays are less common than others.
