What Are Some Pros and Cons of Quitting Drinking?

I'm thinking about quitting and weighing my pros and cons. I'm not a heavy drinker (about 7 - 10 American Beers a night). I just don't see it doing anything beneficial for me.

What are some pros and cons?

Ask Cocky, he's been sober for 5 days and is currently on medication to control the cravings. I'm a nursing student with advice, however, I don't drink alcohol. He's going through the process now, I suggest you hit him up! Hope this helps.

xoxo,

- you need less money - Not a problem but I do spend roughly $200 a week on alcohol. I could use that money for other things.

- your liver will thank you - It does need a break.

- you wont get fat ( or even fater ) - I have been getting quite the "beer belly" lately. Regardless of how much I work out I just can't get rid of it!

Good advice so far. Thanks.

You'll feel better about yourself, better metabolism, more $$$ and you won't die of liver disease, which if you've ever known anyone to have is a very, very horrible way to die.

I am in the same boat. Love the beer...atleast 5 beers a night. Last night it was a pitcher from hooters and a 6 pack.

Going to keep the same track so I can enjoy my holidays with a buzz then after that my doctor is putting me on blood pressure pills so I guess that is your pro (better health)

"I feel sorry for all of you who don't drink. When you wake up in the morning, that's as good as your gonna feel".

"Your not drunk enough if you can lay down on the floor without holding on".

I want to say both of those were said by Frank Sinatra, but it might have been Dean Martin.

I think the biggest contributing factor to me quitting is going to be my health. I know that I'm in the prime of my life at 30 but it's also the time of my life where I should be most critical about my health. When I turned 30 I stumbled upon something that took me 29 years to figure out: I am mortal.

I might just kick it down to one glass of red wine a night since that is supposed to be healthy for you.

Reminds me of a Homer Simpson quote, "Just once in my life I want someone to call me sir without following it up with 'You're causing a scene' "

Mainly my health. I'm 30 now and I have been drinking at that frequency since my freshman year in college. Minus special days or times I was hospitilized, I have drank almost a 12 pack of beer a day for the past 12 years. I just think it's time now that I slow down.

Biggest pro for me is clarity. I'm 5 times as productive when I'm not drinking(hungover) and a lot more focused. Being able to remember all your icq/board conversation and promises helps too. I want to be in the top 50(traffic) this time next year.

I'm pretty productive now. I wonder if I quit drinking if I would be more productive?

I used to drink every day a couple years back. Now I only drink on the weekends or on special occasions.

I can tell you that I personally think 60% more clearer when I am not hung over and havn't drank for a few days.

I bet you would get 1/3 to 1/2 more work done.

Great thread man. I've been thinking about doing the same thing. I just got a blood test during my physical and the doctor wants another one to check my liver functions as some readings were a bit off. I drink about the same as you and it's already affecting the liver. What sucks is, if you drink more than 1-2 drinks a day, you're considered a heavy drinker and makes me wonder even more what effects years of this has already done to my body even though I don't consider myself to be a booze hound and definitely don't get buzzed every night.

The reasons I'm pondering are:

Pros to quitting:

1. Health - liver, heart and brain functions
2. Money savings -- that's about $1000 a month, which could be a decent lease on a car or a mortgage payment.
3. More clarity throughout the days.

Cons to quitting:

1. I do like a buzz when I want one.
2. Makes dealing with other people easier sometimes
3. Quick way to deaden a hard day and relax
4. blah blah blah.

And after reading the pros and cons, the funny thing is the cons are pretty fucking retarded when compared to the benefits of not drinking. Hummm....

I quit drinking and doing drugs a few years ago.. and I realised something very interesting

Drugs and alcohol took away my natural happiness.. in fact.. I didn't know what it felt like to be just naturally happy... I'd see other people enjoying themselves and acting like they were happy and I'd wonder to myself.. how can they do that, and why can't I?

I thought it was something wrong with my personality.

I was on some kind of drug or alcohol since I was 13. The doctor started me on pain killers for cramps (Thanks Doc )

Well.. when I quit everything.. I was miserable for about a month.. then I'd have these bouts of happiness.. sort of like being high, for no reason.. it was a new feeling to me.

I hadn't realised it yet at that time.. when I DID realise it was after I went back to drinking.. the old feelings came back.. those feelings of needing something..

then I quit again.. and that happiness returned.. faster this time! I was floored.. I never believed those people that said you could be happy without drugs or alcohol.. but there I was singing and just being happy like a little kid..

I came to the conclusion that the chemicals in the brain are in a very delicate balance.. and any type of stimulant can really throw those chemicals off..

I'm a smart person.. but I felt so stupid to have wasted so much of my life trying to find what was missing.. oh well.. I found it now.. and it's great

oh and one more thing..

You may not be drinking a lot.. but you're drinking every night.. just like I did

I had this thought in my head that if I only drank at night then I was ok.. lol

I drank a six pack a night for almost a year, and quit just before Thanksgiving. I've already lost 10 pounds of beer belly.... just 40 more to go to get back to my ideal weight of 185.
