From a purely theoretical standpoint here...
"what the heck is wrong with spam?"

I mean.. i don't hear anybody posting about what a cocksucker ed mcmahon & the publishers clearing house are.. nor do i hear anybody pissing & moaning about the $1.50 they saved on a pizza because of their local coupon pages... nor the free carwash they found on their windshield after shopping for books.

Argument here is... why do people think that it's more invasive to get spam? At least no trees died.. no ink was wasted etc...all you have to do is hit the "DEL" key on your keyboard & if you're really smart you'll setup filters on your mail program.

Now I can understand why telemarketing (which i have to humbly admit to doing during my poorer days) should not be permissable... because it is virtually impossible (except for the few cold at hearts) to simply hang up... telemarketing requires a response on your behalf. It requires interaction.

Spam requires a keystroke, Junk Mail requires a trip to the trash can, Telemarketing requires (for most people) a rebuttle.

So why is spam the "evil" one?

Because it was ICQ spam. It pops up in my face when I'm working, and usually every few seconds. The email address is fake, so I'm fairly sure it's some script sending it out as it harvests new addresses. And it pisses me off.

there is a big difference between junk mail and coupons and telemarking calls and spam email. If someone is going to send out a big mailer to your house they have to pay to have it written, pay to have it printed and pay to mail it. This is all an expense to them so at least they are putting money into the economy when they junk mail me. Same with phone callers they have to pay to have the people there to call you and the costs of equiptment, phone bills ect. but spam anyone can do. Anyone can go to download.com and get a shareware email harvester then get an shareware bulk email program and hammer people with email spam. I usually don't care about it and just hit delete but it pisses me off when I get the same spam 26 times in one day or I keep getting spammed over and over and over by the same people and there is no way I can stop it. I went on a weeks vacation not too long ago and came home to 627 new emails of which about 50 of them were actual things I needed. The rest were just spam. We are all picking up the bill for this spam when we pay for our ISP service so that is why it sometimes pisses me off if I go to my mailbox and see junk mail I at least know someone had to pay to send that to just so I can toss it in the trash but every morning I get up to 15+ spam emails that I am paying to get

As far as spam putting $$$ into the economy... cmon dude.. what planet are you from?

Spam generates BILLIONS of dollars in revenue every year... and it DOES cost them money to spam.

I don't want to come off as the spam protagonist here... but I do come home to a totally packed physical mailbox when i go on vacation... usually packed with credit card offers, coupons etc... I have no way of stopping them from filling my mailbox...and i assume that my neighbor probably got the same mail so i don't complain.

Maybe spammers would receive fewer complaints if they just prefaced the entire email with a "This is not personal. You are a consumer & I have something to sell. This is a mass email & you are receiving it simply because you are on the internet, not because you did something to get on my list. If you don't like my email, delete it. If you are angry about receiving unsolicited emails, stop turning on your computer. If you would like to live in a commercial free internet, the minute you just spent reading this email will have cost you $1.99.

Yes. it's 21.95 a month for unlimited access NOW... do you remember what it cost back in the day? I'm pretty sure it was more like $100 a month after usage charges.

Have you ever tried to send out 100,000 emails? How exactly would you do it? What host would you use? What software would you use? Where would you get your lists?

We do it every day with our 100% double opt-in lists & we have to utilize multiple servers and keep in constant contact with our hosts in order to stay out of trouble.... and that is OPT-IN.

That's what I don't understand about spammers... it's gotta be a full time gig.. or at least a damn good portion of the day. But then you add to it the fact that everyone they spam is getting pissed off, and they're probably jumping from host to host... why? It can't possibly be worth the problems that go along with it. Oh well.... I'm sure they'll keep spamming, just the same as I'll keep reporting them. Email or IRC spam isn't quite as annoying... just hit the delete, set up filters, or ignore it. But the ICQ spam just is too much. Those guys I do everything I can to take 'em down.

yeah the only real solace I get is when someone spams me for their porn site and it's often just a refer code for a sponser so I report them to the sponser. I once got spammed a refer code, reported them and then replied to spam and told them I had reported them. A day later I got an email from the spammer begging me to contact the sponser and tell them I had made a mistake because he had 2K in in earnings from the sponser that they were now not going to pay him because of his spams.

First of all, whoever put weird Al on this thread has great taste I'm an REM fan too so double cool.

I did the telemarketing thing too and it was a crap job. However, I needed it to pay the rent at the time.

What you learn is that there is two different kinds of telemarketing.

Those where you have a lead (like when someone already bought something from you and you call them up and offer them a renewal to the magazine or something similar) and cold calling. I hated cold calling and eventually asked to be removed from it.

I feel the same way with spam. Even if I don't like it I will just grin and bear it if someone got my email in a legit way and is spamming details of a program or a product that relates to a site I joined or a product I bought.

What I hate is those spams where they don't even take the time to make it a blind CC and you can tell they just went through the alphabet. I also hate those that lie to me and tell me I once bought something from them or joined their mailing list.

It happens in the webmaster spam too. For a while I was getting a spam from a 'sponsor' that claimed I had signed up with them and supplied me with a username and passowrd. I never even heard of them, let alone signed up with them.

I can deal with spam. Just don't try to scam me.

The regular mail is a totally different element altogether. Why? Because the internet only has so much bandwidth available every day, and if spam were allowed to go unchecked, how fast do you think your pages would load? How fast would your important emails reach their destinations? With 100,000 times more email crap glutting up the internet, would anyone still be asking why spam is bad?? Companies can have their flyers and coupons delivered by regular mail anytime, and it doesn't slow down the process at all. My morning mail still comes at 2:30 in the afternoon like clockwork. Could your email server handle 500 or 1000 more emails every day and not get clogged up? And, how easy would it be to sift through all the SHIT to find the legitimate emails?

All that junk mail you get everyday? Most of them come with pre-paid return envelopes. (because they want your business). Stuff everything they just sent you into that envelope that THEY paid for, and send it back to them.

Actually, you can deal with the regular mail ads simply by putting a "no junk mail" and "no flyers" notice on your mailbox. If anyone then ignores that notice and shoves crap in your mailbox, you can usually find out what delivery service they work for and call that company and get it remedied.

As for spam, you can put up the "unspammable email java code" on all your sites so bots cannot harvest your email addy, and you can figure out how to filter your email account, but you'll STILL get spam. Why? Because there are so many assholes and asshole-companies that have no morales or scruples, and they will sell your email addy every time you use it to sign up for anything. Try submitting your site using a search engine submission tool, and you'll find out the meaning of spam and why it's so fucking annoying.

I was away for 2 days last week, and when I got back I had over 300 emails sitting there, 90% of which were spam shit crap fuck. It took me a long time to sift through it all to find the messages that mattered to me, and all that time could have been better spent, believe me.

Well, any way you look at it, it's still a major pain in the ass. Especially ICQ spam that just pops right in your face... I shouldn't have to spend my time trying to block that shit, because I never asked for all that fuckin' spam in the first place. If I could, I would send every single one of those spams right back to where they came from a thousand times over for each one.

Exactly. And the removal links that ARE in some of them are usually bogus. Like, "email here to be removed" and it bounces back nearly ALL of the time. AND, if you try to email the spammers back, your email is also bounced.

I have a few email accounts that have the option for refusing any mails from anyone not in my address book, i think I'll start putting that to better use soon

However, there are times when people can get way out of hand with the definition of spam. I mean, a few years back I started my first model's site, and I emailed several dozen models and offered them a free portfolio page on the site complete with banner link to their site. I got replies ranging from "yes! Thanks!" to "stop spamming or we'll rep0rt you"

I was amazed! You mean that a legitimate web page proposal is spam to some people??? Then...what about all the unsolicited requests I get for link trades?? Are they also spam?

Fuck some people are brain-dead about everything. Even spam.

I think it doesn't really matter what it's for... (whether it's something *free* or not), but who it is being sent to, and how it is perceived. If you send a free model web page offer out, and one goes to a 23 year old fine-ass model that's been thinking about a website, then it is probably welcome mail. But if another one goes out to a 47 year old guy who has no interest in nude modeling... it's just another piece of annoying spam.

If it can be targeted to the proper demographic, then some things can probably slide without any problems... but unfortunately, that's usually not the case with spammers. After all, how can you know who's email address belongs to who when you're harvesting them with a script? Instead, they just hit everyone with an all encompassing blanket of spam and hope for the best.

I don't mind getting stuff I actually requested... but the shit that shows up in my box day after day is insane.

That's the thing, I surfed the net myself for models and their email addresses, so I know that I ONLY sent the offers to models and only models.

One "fine ass" model had her publicist email me and threaten me on her behalf. How lameass is that? I thought the whole idea of modelling and promoting your modelling career online was to get MORE exposure, not less.

As I said, in some instances, people have a huge misconception about what spam is. (and some folks are always just gonna be braindead no matter how nice and helpful you are to them)
