5200rpm vs. 7200rpm - Big difference?
I'm going to buy a laptop on a budget, so is it worth it spending the extra money for the 7200rpm upgrade?
Is the speed upgrade noticeable? |

For the small price difference it is definately worth it. You don't want to skimp on the hard drive.

Here's an article from tomshardware about notebook harddrives.

If you're just checking email and surfing the web, not really, if you're actually using your laptop, yes, you would see a difference. I'm going from all 5200 rpm drives to all 10k rpm drives in my new system, I think it's worth the extra $$$.

It was pretty noticeable to me.. but that may be from going from a 5200 drive with 2 MB cache to 7200 with 8MB cache.

When transfer files to hd 2 hd you will notice a big difference. Or when you extract big files you'll notice it.

Get the 7200 RPM, it's worth it and you'll notice the difference.

If you're smart, you'll go for the 7200 rpm (or greater) drive in the biggest size you can get, and make sure that your new laptop is equipped with a FireWire port.
You'll be able to capture surprisingly good video that way (more than adquate for porno on the Internet) and do remarkably cool and profitable things with it. ![]() |

Would you buy a car that redlines at 5,200rpms? I hope not. Same thing with harddrives!

I think you would see a bigger difference in SATA vs IDE rather than 5200RPM vs 7200

I think my laptop just has a 4,200RPM drive.... I need to get a 7,200 drive... since this is my main computer now and its almost always plugged in the effects of a faster drive can only be positive.
