5200rpm vs. 7200rpm - Big difference?

I'm going to buy a laptop on a budget, so is it worth it spending the extra money for the 7200rpm upgrade?

Is the speed upgrade noticeable?

Spunky 11-24-2004 08:15 PM

Not really..maybe when running mulitple programs ,they will open a split second faster :)

evildick 11-24-2004 08:18 PM

For the small price difference it is definately worth it. You don't want to skimp on the hard drive.

Here's an article from tomshardware about notebook harddrives.

If you're just checking email and surfing the web, not really, if you're actually using your laptop, yes, you would see a difference. I'm going from all 5200 rpm drives to all 10k rpm drives in my new system, I think it's worth the extra $$$.

Nicky 11-24-2004 08:46 PM

its 2000rpm of difference :Graucho

EviLGuY 11-24-2004 08:47 PM

It was pretty noticeable to me.. but that may be from going from a 5200 drive with 2 MB cache to 7200 with 8MB cache.

thePelican 11-24-2004 08:49 PM

2000 rotations per minute is the difference.

Vitasoy 11-24-2004 08:50 PM

When transfer files to hd 2 hd you will notice a big difference. Or when you extract big files you'll notice it.

raster 11-24-2004 09:20 PM

Get the 7200 RPM, it's worth it and you'll notice the difference.

Stephen 11-24-2004 11:00 PM

If you're smart, you'll go for the 7200 rpm (or greater) drive in the biggest size you can get, and make sure that your new laptop is equipped with a FireWire port.

You'll be able to capture surprisingly good video that way (more than adquate for porno on the Internet) and do remarkably cool and profitable things with it.

:thumbsup

Would you buy a car that redlines at 5,200rpms? I hope not. Same thing with harddrives!

JSA Matt 11-24-2004 11:23 PM

I think you would see a bigger difference in SATA vs IDE rather than 5200RPM vs 7200 :2 cents:

KRL 11-25-2004 12:11 AM

40% better.

BuckLover 11-25-2004 12:21 AM

Shit! I thought you were talking about cars!

More rpm = Better?:uhoh I THINK

xclusive 11-25-2004 12:26 AM

Go for the best speed that you can afford man it's as simple as that...

SCSI. I've got a 10GB laying around my other house somewhere.

abadfish 11-25-2004 01:06 AM

I think my laptop just has a 4,200RPM drive.... I need to get a 7,200 drive... since this is my main computer now and its almost always plugged in the effects of a faster drive can only be positive.

venus 11-25-2004 01:07 AM

my servers have 10,000 RPM SCSI drives in them (Cheetah drives made by Seagate)
they also have a 15,000 RPM drive

Not to mention, the price is not that big of a increase.
