I'd like to know this too, the typical response seems to be that plasma has a a shorter life span than lcd. The picture difference seems to be minimal and lcd pricing is still signifcantly higher than plasma. I'd like to go with a plasma, but if its only going to last me 4 years then I'll spend more and go with an lcd.

Plasma.

Contrast.

Advantage: Plasma. For scenes with a lot of dark and light images shown simultaneously-as with content originating from DVDs, video games, and NTSC TV signals-plasma TVs will consistently outperform LCD TVs.

COLOR SATURATION

Advantage: Plasma, with the following caveat: While plasma displays are especially good for moving images, LCD technology is better at displaying static images with particular crispness and even coloration.

VIEWING ANGLE Advantage: Plasma

Plasma manufacturers have made much of their 160° viewing angles, which is about as good as horizontal and vertical viewing angles get. This owes to the fact that each pixel is lit by itself, not from some central light source. Hence, each pixel is more readily visible because its brightness is consistent with every other pixel on the screen.

VIDEO PLAYBACK Advantage: Plasma

PRODUCTION SIZE & COST Advantage:

Advantage: Plasma. Even though production costs and retails prices have come down for both technologies, plasma still has the edge as far as production cost and capacity go.

LCD.

FUNCTIONAL CONSIDERATIONS "Computer use"

Advantage: LCD, except at "harsh" viewing angles

LONGEVITY Advantage LCD X2

SCREEN INTEGRITY Advantage: LCD

VOLTAGE REQUIREMENTS Advantage LCD X2

Now you make the final decision ;)

Yes, but LCD is the lower quality choice at the moment.. get a plasma and when it dies, the LCD should be better, and get the LCD =)

If you can afford it.

LCD

Lighter weight - Easy install (no hassles with hanging it on the wall or buying extra equipment) - Awesome, Awesome, Awesome picture - Lasts longer than plasma - Cheaper than plasma!

MS Media Center and gaming consols have a smokn picture quality too if you have any of that stuff.

Pixels on plasma blow out and warranty does not cover this. SO you could end up with a blotch area right in the middle of the screen. They tell you this is standard and its not considered a defect until a percentage of bad pixels appear overall....

Would definately ask questions in this area if your considering plasma

False!

Gaming on plasma will result in "burned in" images! LCD is ideal for gaming, plus you can hook a pc up to it as well.

I spent months shopping LCD / DLP / Plasma ... Everything pointed me back to the LCD, but TV's are very personal. It depends on your needs.

I love my 50' Sony Grand WEGA XBR LCD!

they can make much larger flat-screen plasmas at the moment. A flatscreen LCD over like 30" looks like crap. After that you need to move into a rear projection LCD which is really a different beast. Plasmas have burn-in problems and are not really the best long-term solution. So - really if you want a BIG TV, the answer is neither. The technology isn't where it needs to be yet. Wait a couple years and the answer is LCD. If you want something under 30" the answer is LCD. Otherwise, get a widescreen DLP for now (look it up).

because you got a rear projection model - not true LCD - they don't make 'em that big.

Has anyone had a plasma long enough to say whether they burn-in that easy, or they die after 4 years?

I recently bought a JVC 42" Plasma tv, with a 5 year warranty that covers everything except burn-in....just wondering if this is all specualtion/rumors or if it has happened to anyone.

You guys have no clue, with normal viewing (4 hours a day) plasma would last 10 years,

Advantages of Plasma over LCD:

Plasma is a HELL of alot brighter, and has better, way better color saturation over LCD AND DLP.

Plasma has a way the fuck better viewing angle over DLP or LCD.

Plasma has a way better response time and refresh rate over LCD. Better for High frame rate games, and better for Action movies.

If you goto your local mega Electronics store, you can confirm this for yourself. My local store has 3 50+" PLasma, LCD and DLP Tv's side by side playin the same video feed, and the plasma without question looks a shitload better.

The only disadvantages of Plasma:

Plasma is more expensive, a FUCK of alot more per square inch of screen, just look up the price on a 60+" LCD vs plasma, there's a 5k price diff.

Plasma can't be tilted or it will die, has to stay mostly verticle. Scares me as I am now moving cross country with my plasma.

Plasma has the same burn in problems as Rear Projection TV's but it's not as profound.

Foget plasma and lcd GO WITH DLP ...My DLP projector was $1200 bucks and blows away any $4000 plasma or lcd tv out there...no matter where you sit in the room the color, brigtness and ,claritty stay at 100% AND i have it set on a 72" screen..if my wall was 10 feet wide by 10 feet high..then my picute would be 10 x10,and still have the same killer picuture, next time your at cuicut city..try getting of the little couch they have set up and take a few steps to the left or right...you can barely see whats on the screen!!

DLP's I looked at all had the same viewing angle as the LCD's, and they weren't as bright or as saturated as the plasmas, but better than the LCD's still.

ohhh, missed the "projector" part of your post.

haven't looked at the projectors since the only ones in the past tha had decent brightness in a lit room cost over 4k, and the pics still sucked at 60+" inches.

Plus damn projector bulbs burn out and are expensive.

i shopped recently and picked up the Panasonic 42" plasma - top rated, for only $2700 at Best Buy.(was $3000 and got them to price match a 10% off sale at Circuit City).

my model has a 60,000 hour life, much longer than most plasmas. and panasonic has a 0 dead pixel policy - if you have 1 they will replace it within the warranty period.

HD looks awesome on it...so does my XBox and superbit DVDs.

supposedly with a LCD you can replace so part when the picture dies, but at point big LCDs/plasmas will be so cheap i don't think that's a big issue.

supposedly prices will drop around $1000 next year on the models that are around $2500-3500 now...

Plasma is newer technology and has a higher quality pictuer. However, it is more expensive and does not last as long as an LCD screen.

I asked that same question to a television saleman the other day. Apparently plasma technology has become better and the life span has equalled that of an LCD. I think the guy said that these new Plasma's will last 60,000 hours, which is like 10 years worth or more. Also LCD tv's are limited to 32" where as plasma is not.

The true LCDs are a helluva lot sharper, brighter, truer colors, basically they kick ass over the projection versions. But you pay about as much for a 26" true LCD as you do for like a 50" projection LCD. If you're going to get a projection TV the best right now are the DLPs. Really I don't think the technology's where it needs to be on any of these yet. Especially for the price.

I saw a new panasonic plasma the other day hooked up to a computer....5k something resolution x 4k something.....picture was unbelievably clear - looked as good as my samsung 600:1 contrast flat screen monitor.

price tag was around $5,000 though.

(looked like a 50 in. widescreen)

i've got both. a 27 inch viewsonic LCD in my bedroom, for watching tv and hooking a laptop up to while in bed. works out nicely:

and a 55 inch Sony XBR plasma for watching movies, etc. this thing rocks, the picture quality is simply amazing:
