Fris, if registrar lock is not enabled, then you should transfer it to another registrar, and you'll be able to change DNS servers there. If it is enabled, you should try to disable the lock so you can transfer it to another registrar...but if you can't change DNS servers, you probably can't disable registrar lock either.

Your problem seems to corroborate the general rule of thumb that nobody should use godaddy.

I always hear bad things about GoDaddy but this seems like more of a case of human error.

3 years with godaddy, not a problem.

They have policies and procedures to follow in order to protect the domain holders, it's not a bad thing.

I would guess that most of godaddy's customers never have a problem. But some of their policies create a risk, maybe just a 1% chance per domain per year that you're going to be screwed by them in some way through no fault of your own. All it takes is one erroneous spam complaint, and you can have your domain shut down for a day or two before it gets straightened out. That can be a costly problem.

Requiring a CC number to do a DNS change is nonsense, in my opinion. I had a different company try and authenticate me through a CC's last four digits, but I had several CCs I might have used, no idea which one, so that created a pain in the ass too. Password and email verification should be more than sufficient for something as minor as a DNS change. (I.e., a change that can be undone on the unlikely chance it was done fraudulantly...as opposed to domain transfers or deletions).

Yep...whole idea here is to PROTECT your domain from someone who doesn't own it! And you're mad at them because they want the info from the ORIGINAL cc??

why don't more people use www.namecheap.com

the best in the business. 8.88 all year round, and none of this bullshit that godaddy causes.

Godaddy is good, it's not their fault you lost the cc information that's we use as well to prove customers are the actual owner.

Maybe you would rather your domain get ripped off.

I have 8K+ domains and currently use 10+ registrars (w/ 600 domains at Godaddy) and never had a problem with godaddy, though I have had numerous problems with other registrars (that's why I'm launching RegistrarBlacklist.com).

I have no idea what you're talking about in regards to "requiring" CC info for dns change. I've never been asked for that info unless making MAJOR acct changes. Plus I asked for and was given "extra" security features that other registrars dont/wont offer. They have security policies in place to protect rightful owner, just like all registrars. While I feel sorry for you, it does go to show that Godaddy is doing their best to prevent the domain from being stolen. That's why they are leader of the pack.

call them. explain your situation. if you are currently listed as email contacts, then they may work with you since they can verify who you are.

good luck.

I had a very similar experience with a friend of mine who used a company CC and then lost track of it. He lost the domain. End of story. I tried to help him - even bid on his domain on several drop sites - didn't catch it.

GoDaddy didn't do anything to stop it so you're up for a hard fight.

Go Daddy Sucks. Well...in your case I don't think it 's their fault but how ever they sucks. With www.enom.com or www.namecheap.com I never had problems, I can't say same for GoDaddy.
