Anyone have a D70 camera? Thoughts?

I'm getting one and am just wondering what kind of experiences you all have had with the D70 digital camera. I know I can look up reviews online, but you have to admit that we have a rather specific purpose for it, and therefore might have different opinions.

So.. opine away!

We've got a D70 and I love it for the most part (Though I rarely use it, it's really LadyM's camera). My biggest gripe with it is the focal points, it's a pain in the ass to get it to focus where you want it to vs where it thinks you want it to, so Canon has the upper hand in this manner, but I can't fault the camera in any other manner.

I have a D70 with the 24-120 VR lens. Works for me. I have always heard the kit lens is really good. The lens I have is good because I never have to take it off. It is not a good lens for lower light but I never use it for that anyway.

The camera battery lasts forever and the ergonimics are excellent. I have big hands and this camera feels just about perfect.

What lenses you usually use to shoot models?

We've only got the one lense currently, really need to upgrade to faster glass and a better selection. Because we use it for multi-fuction we're using a 24-120.

Yeah, that lens is not the fastest but sometimes it is the best lens to have on due to the wide range.

I looked at the 70-200 VR last week and that is SWEET. They have a rebate on that lens right now.

I'm not familiar with the D70, but we do have a D100 and D1X.

Look at the way the camera is set up it might be refocusing as you reframe the image. They have a setting that allows focussing to alter as the image you shoot moves. Unfortunately if you do not hit the model with the focussing frame, in the view finder, exactly right as you shoot the image the camera will refocus.

Took me a week to find out one of our cameras had been reset and we why were getting out of focus images.

D70 is a good camera but make sure you get a good lens with it. Depends what you want to do with is is the simple answer.

I'm not sure, but I think that is the camera that Trixie uses.
I am still debating between that and the canon10D myself.

Sounds to me like you have a back focus problem like I had. Search online about the back focus problem and the D70 and you will see that many people have the same complaint. There were a handful of cams with this issue.

I sent mine back for repair and now it's shooting perfectly.

The battery on it lasts a very long time.

I found a site with Focus test charges, I'm going to print them off and run some tests later, thanks for the heads up, I thought it might have just been a quirk with the D70 itself, hopefully it's something I can get fixed. Thanks again.

They will fix it for you if that's what it is, and then you'll love it.

The D70 is a nice camera, a little bit noisy (noisier as the Canon Counterparts) but as long as you stay with ISO 200 (the lowest setting) you should do fine.
Stay away from the 24-120mm, sorry to say that, this is the most shitty zoom Nikon ever built and sold. yes its popular due to its large zoom Range and the new VR but optical its a mess. (see link here http://www.photodo.com/prod/lens/nikkor.shtml#Nikkor

Getyouself the 28-70 (if you are willing to spend the same money for the lens as for the camera or go with the 28-105. Both are much better options optical wise.

the AF 24-85mm/2.8-4D might be another good option in the medium price range.

From what I have read the newer 24-120 VR is much better than the older 24-120. Also the first batch of VR lenses were not great but more recent ones are much better. I don't have any problems with mine but then again I tend to shoot using mid-range most of the time.

We have used D100's and D1x's for years and our in-house make-up girl has just bought a D70 and its really great. A bit noisy compared to our new EOS1n but very impressive and excellent for web pics.

I like the 20D but it is too small for my hands. Why the fuck did they make it smaller than the 10D?!!!
