car insurance/registration question for Canadians
i was just told this is impossible, but i find it hard to believe.
i have a place in Whistler and Montreal. also have an office in Edmonton. but apparently i can't hold insurance and registration for different provinces at the same time. for example if i want to insure and register different cars under BC, Alberta and Quebec. apparently this is because you need a driver's license issued in a particular province in order to get insurance and registration in that province - and since you can only hold one license, it makes it impossible to insure/reg in more than one place. am i way off base here, or is this the way it is?

Doesn't sound right to me.
A car should be insured under the jurisdiction it's driven in. What you're trying to do is the right thing. Best example I can think of is when two Dutch Webmasters lived with me in Vancouver for a year. One of them bought a car. He was able to register and insure that car in BC without even a BC driver's license. So while I don't know about the other provinces, in BC, you don't even have to have ANY valid Driver's license to insure a vehicle. I've insured vehicles in the middle of prohibitions without any problems.

could be the way it is since the provinces run their own independent insurance

Why don't you insure them all at the same place?

I'm about 99% sure that it's not a problem in BC.

3 years ago I had a Quebec DL and succesfully registered/insured my car in BC.
So it's totally possible.

I travelled west for a business trip - and they said the same thing in that you can only insure one car - one province. I had to remove the insurance from my stang and put it on the rental car when driving from BC to Alberta

That's simply not true. I have an American drivers liscence and I have car insurance for Ontario.

I was in a band (based out of edmonton) and the insurance companies here told us that we needed commercial plates.
Perhaps not the same kind of situation, but it does allow you to hold a liscence in one province but drive your vehicles and keep them in the province of your choice. |
