Stem cell research
How many of you think it should be allowed?
As you all know.. bush banned Stem Cell Research in America.. which could be the biggest turn-around in the human race. I know it is not banned all around the globe, but America has lots of money to put into it compared to anybody else in the world and it's being a pussy about it. With stem cells, you could eliminate any kind of disease, grow back tissues, cells.. basically those stem cells can take any shape of the missing cells in your body to make you healthy again.. and i'm willing to bet that HIV/AIDS cure will come from stem cells also. You think it's okay to take stem cells from baby fetuses or you believe it's "unethical", even though they are dead, and should stay banned and not be researched on to cure some of the biggest diseases in the human race and eliminate things like diabetes, etc ... quiet possibly aids.. ? |

wow Shemp, that is really cool. Did it help? Can you tell us more about it? Do you know if the German was a fetus or adult? are there any restrictions on stem cell research in Canada?

I think the most ridiculous thing is the restrictions on using embryos for stem cell research. My Christian grandparents claim a soul starts at conception therefore you are killing a person if you destroy a frozen embryo!

so we found a close match in Germany (adult male age 26) and induced his Stem cells into me. And 3 1/2 years later im still here.. Stem cell research in canada isnt as big a political football as it is in the US...the US seems to have a real issue with the "chord cells" from a fetus... so in my case the Stem cell transplant extended my life, it didnt cure me, but it gives me more time to review galleries ;) |

There will always be people that have religious beliefs like your grandparents' Ask them if they would change their views if they could stay healthy without relying on medicine, and not EVER be "too old" to do anything. I'm pretty sure they would have a "change of heart" ![]() |

Shemp,
What kind of match does the donor need to be? it sounds like more than blood type etc if he was German. How did you find him as a donor? |

the best match is a twin, but that didnt apply in my case and my brother didnt match either, so i had to get an unrelated donor...of course that takes many months and in the meantine you are dying from the disease. Matching involves typing human leukocyte antigen (HLA) tissue. The antigens on the surface of these special white blood cells determine the genetic make-up of a person's immune system. There are at least 100 HLA antigens, however, it is believed that there are a few major antigens that determine whether a donor and recipient match. The others are considered minor and their effect on a successful transplant is not as well defined. Medical research is still investigating the role all antigens play in the process of a bone marrow transplant. The more antigens that match, the better the engraftment of donated marrow. Engraftment of the stem cells occurs when the donated cells make their way to the marrow and begin reproducing new blood cells. As it turned out, i was a type O blood, but my donor was a type B...so now i have become a type B as well ;) |

Very interesting Shemp! I just did some reading on marrow.org . I am part Eskimo and it says they have a shortage of Alaskan native donors, maybe I will join the registry. Is tissue typing done with a biopsy?
Does that Canadian health system pay for things like bone marrow transplants? |

The harvesting of the stem cells from the donor is done in a couple of ways, either by sucking the bone marrow out of your spine and hip bones or purging the stem cells from your blood through a machine for a day or so. Then these stem cells are induced into the recipient... |

I'm all for stem cell research!
![]() I love Jesse Ventura's quote on Bush... "It scares me when a president says he won't support stem cell research because it goes against God," Ventura said Wednesday. "I have news for you. If you're waiting for God to cure Alzheimer's, then we are going to be waiting a long time."

Republicans are anti-science. What kind of barbarian culture puts the clampdown on science because it conflicts with their "Bible"?

Isn't there some big decision coming up in California whether they might go it alone with stem cell research?
It has some big money backing from what I recall. |
