SE paid inclusion? Info please.
I guess I could post this at searchengineforums, but I'd like to get opinions from friends and people in the adult biz, as it would be of more relevance to me.
Anyway, here it goes. I know Inktomi has had a paid inclusion service for quite some time now, and I noticed AltaVista is doing the same now. Have any of you done it and experienced it was worth it? And what do they actually include, the single URL you submit, or does their spider crawl all the links on your page and even follow the links out? 'Cause in that case it would be smarter to submit a "crawler" page linking to all your sites, instead of submitting them one by one. I'm considering this, the indexing times seem like forever otherwise. Plus, having your site crawled every other day also seems like a good thing to do, especially if you run one that updates often. Also, does anyone know what Yahoo will charge to add your site to their directory? What other SE have this paid inclusion thing and how often do they re-index your site? ------------------ Respect, DamageX |

We paid Inktomi for submission, but, so far, we haven't seen much in the way of results.
Alta Vista, on the other hand, has indexed our sites every week and our traffic is increasing. Yahoo now charges $600.00 to review your site. No guarantee of inclusion to the directory. ------------------ Sin-Text-Because text sells sex. |

Yahoo is 199 for mainstream sites. 600 for adult and not worth paying since there are no guarentees. Get in the others and they will get you sooner or later.
If you do it right, you can get indexed in the smaller SE's and dmoz in roughly 2 weeks. It just takes reading the sites that have been listed here several times in other threads to figure out which way you like to get in and test others to see which works best for you, ![]() What works for us, may not work for you and vice versa. |

I know DamageX and I gave an opinion. It takes patience to get up there in a SE and no one stays up there anyhow. So why pay for it?
It does seem to help the standings when you climb thru the ranks of the SEs. But with so much competition its going to be hard to keep a site in the top 10 constantly if you have more than one, are working alone and trying to update sites as well. Paying gets you a burst of hits MAYBE. But not always. It pays to interconnect your own sites with small link lists. That helps each site gain more standing in the different engines. But one downside to paid submissions. You have to then deal with a human looking at your site, which in most cases they have their own sites. So if they think your site sux, you get a low shot if at all. How many people actually can say (and follow thru) that they don't let their mood and emotions to play in that? ![]() Work with the spiders-bots where the human side is not going to influence anything. ![]() |

I agree on the human review part, but what I actually wanted to know was if they just review my site and add it to their index or send a spider to crawl it, along with ALL the links in it. If they do the latter, then it might be well worth it, could help boosting linkpop, provided they found links poiting back to me. Worst case scenario, $50 down the drain, I can live with that, my site would still be indexed eventually. ------------------ Respect, DamageX |

The Altavista pay for inclusion is ridiculous, way too expensive for just beeing included in a 500 million URL database LOL

And then they list about 25 links to their own sponsors above the "real" database listings with each adult related search.
On the other hand, a friend recently told me he is "always" looking for the listings from the middle to the bottom, leavin out those at the top of the first page, because the top listings "are always paid/commercial etc.." On the other hand, we want the newbies coz they pay, and newbies click on the first thing they see, and that is not you, in Altavista. |

Dude, that still doesn't answer my question, do they only index your front page, or do they crawl your entire site, along with all the links in it?

DamageX:
In all honesty, I don't know what they're doing to my site. Whether or not they're indexing one page or all my pages. I haven't looked and I don't really care...as long as..when I run my stats program, I'm seeing hits from Alta Vista...More hits than I got before. And...more importantly to me.....I'm getting more sales. For the $39.00...it has paid for itself. And, the more sites I add, the price goes down. I added a paysite three weeks ago that was dead in the water and had originally been another genre, so the traffic we were getting was no longer targeted traffic. We've had three sales in the last three days, up from zero. I'd say it's working. ------------------ Sin-Text-Because text sells sex. |

Why don't you just read their TOS? They explain the "whole site or single URL" pretty clear and short...

Why would they crawl all your pages when they are asking for $ xx per URL (not site)?

Na that TOS is old, thats how the spider worked a long time ago. the Scooter (AV Spider) will only scann you first page, and you won't get a top 10 place on a keyword that converts if you don't pay. ie. a top 10 listing in "free whatever" on will only eat bandwidht on the other hand "young teens" may convert U just have to buy that keyword for a lot of $ Try to work with other languages than english, that still works. my6 [This message has been edited by my6com (edited 07-28-2001).] |

They will not crawl your site if you pay them (if they are not already). The will index that page - and that page only - that is all you are paying for.
You are not supposed to get a higher ranking, but you may avoid their stupid submission penalties. These are two of the most dishonest and incompetent Search Engines out there. You will almost certainly have to pay to get a decent listing on new sites. My 2 cents |

Oh and I agree with Lord Assmore, I know Google VERY well - and the stuff I have seen on adult webmaster boards is often VERY inaccurate. Even some of the so called experts I can say with 100% certainty - do not know what they are talking about. I do not want to step on anyones toes, but that is the case.
Hint: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO ANYONE that talks about meta keyword tags being important - unless you entered a time machine and went back three years. Some of the SE forms are inaccurate as well, but in general - they have more accurate info. |

No. Almost all SE other than google do not spider links themselves. And in case of AV, I don't think that they charge for single and each subsequent URL and spider for free at the same time. |

Yes, Most SE, as Fart points out - do not really "spider" websites anymore. They are too lazy. Google and alltheweb/lycos are the only ones that do so on a regular and thorough basis. Northern light does a little - after they eventually find your site.
If you want to concentrate on a search engine for free - pick google. It is the winner hands down. |

Yeah, google and dmoz. Google doesn't suck up the traffic with a million partner links on the result pages, and dmoz brings in the good 1:50 aol newbie traffic.

Thanks guys. Then I guess an Inktomi paid inclusion would be worth trying after all, since they don't spider pages anyway... I'm still considering the AV paid inclusion, but now I'm not so sure anymore. Anyway, thanks for the input, it's really helped.

Yeah do that but buy a keyword in a other language than english. and use sponsors (dailers) in the country U select, that will pay of. U can get a dailer sponsor in most of the european countries now and the keywords "non english" keywords is sold for a nice price. By doing that U won't have to compete with overspamed SE's Just a tip, and to you US webmasters maybe you should try to translate you pages with world.altavista.com and get some sponsors from europe, they are a few years behind US and how many of you wouldn't like to earn what U earned in 1999 *smile* my6 |

There was a write up in the San Jose Mercury News today about S/E charging to list web pages, and it was not nice to them.
Said the surfer is getting screwed if the search engine excepts pay for listing and that's true they are. You know these guys try all kinds of stuff and think if it does not work we can always go back like it was. WRONG you've lost market share and you'll most likely not get it back, and that's a fact. Not with just the Internet but any Industry. Don't know if it was any other papers, but this is the Silicone Valley. Hell did not know there was a spell checker on this board, maybe I should clean my glasses Jim |
