hmmm gateway, never heard of that..
and for that price, it could be just a shitty plasma screen!

If you wanna buy one, buy a good one, take a brand, and let someone in a store advice you about it.. I've seen some plasma screens, and usually, the cheaper ones just have a bad quality..

I bought a Philips 42" plasma a month ago, got a good deal

What'd you pay? and good quality compared to other plasmas?

The low price kind scares me.

feelin' ya, hence thread just don't want to go overboard since I probably won't have it for too too long, just a stand in for a year or two and a living room TV while other banged up one is in basement.

FF

BTW: which Phillips did you buy? Always been a fan of their products.

did extensive research into the Gateway's:

they do not produce the color black well (dark movie scenes are just black screen).

I would not reccomend the Gateway's unless they have made major improvements in the last 6 months (which I doubt)

I have the high brightness model of their 42" and you should get the EXACT model number and visit gateways website for full disclosure specs for whatever exact model that is.
I'm happy with mine, especially since I used ASR rewards to buy it, lol

I read reviews on it , they were fair to poor. They ended it with you get what you pay for.

HAHAHAH LOOK AT THE REVIEWS FROM EPINIONS.COM

It's rated 1 star out of 5

What a waste of money.
by hendo,May 04 '04
Pros: None
Cons: Where do I begin.

Probably the biggest mistake I have ever made in purchasing a television. I have had it approx. 15 months, and the logic board went out. I called a very rude support and CSU department and discovered they wanted $1,000 to fix it. After looking at other complaints, it seems this is a very common problem. To top it off, only Gateway has the parts. Next time I will spend the extra money and buy from a good Japanese company.

---------------------------------

If you deal with Gateway you WILL be sorry!
by kelcomco,Jul 29 '04
Pros: Can't think of one good experience that I have had with Gateway.
Cons: Poor video, audio, service, longevity. Gateway is the pits.

I bought a 42" Gateway in December, 2000.
The next day they called me and told me they had messed up on the price and wanted me to pay hundreds more. I told them no.
They screwed up on the delivery.
The picture was so-so. The noise from the screen is distracting. The heat emitted causes the room it's located in to be 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house.
1 year and a half after the purchase my picture went dead. Gateway sent out a repairman. He could not fix it and Gateway is trying to charge me 450.00 for coming out and telling me it can't be fixed.
I despise Gateway.

---------------------------------

Don't ever buy a Plasma TV from Gateway
by kenajf,Jun 04 '04
Pros: Lots of inputs.
Cons: Everything

My Plasma TV power supply blew after 15 months. I was told it can not be fixed the TV is a total loss. Gateway would sell me another TV, are they crazy. This is a new marketing method, your TV goes and they sell you another.

---------------------------------

don't wast your money!
by rayderdude,Apr 12 '04
Pros: the price is good
Cons: poor quality and poor color

I won a $3200.00 42"plasma Tv in a contest.I would never ever want to buy this Tv. it shows real bad and the color is not all that. I have a sony 36" flat screen that shows a thousand times better and I only paid $1200.00 dollars. this Tv is so bad i have shipped it back for credit.now I don't know what to buy because gateway will only give me store credit. oh, one more thing how can i get store credit when all the gateway retail stores are all closed.

---------------------------------

The Worst TV Ever
by macintong,Sep 04 '04
Pros: the design
Cons: longevity was horrible, bad quality, bad customer service

I bought the TV in December 2002. It only lasted 18 months. I asked them to come and fix the TV once but the problem wasn't solved. Currently, I am still waiting for the company to replace my TV(like they promised). Customer service put me on hold for literally hours and I finally got through, they didn't deliver the TV on the date they promised. I went through all this hassle for a month and yet I am still waiting for my replacement TV. If you want to buy a Plasma TV, invest your money on another brand. no wonder most of the local stores are closed down. hopefully, Gateway Brand will be history.

---------------------------------

NOT WORTH THE MONEY
by padoobs,Apr 13 '04
Pros: Thin body
Cons: bad sound quality, and longevity

After 15 months this UNIT blew up..power supply , they think..but GATEWAY told me it is not worth repairing and since it is 15 months old and out of warranty, I wasted $2999 on a poor sound quality TV

Go buy something of higher quality with better customer service..DO NOT GET RIPPED OFF like I did.

---------------------------------

Best word to describe this TV is JUNK
by yerfdoggydog,Jul 18 '04
Pros: Nice remote control.
Cons: TV doesn't last, bulky design

The TV was installed professionally with not only a Surge protector but a BBU and power conditioner and still have been through 2 replacements since purchased and now the TV is out of warranty and dead again with an 800.00 repair bill. All of this trouble in 16 months of ownership. Same scenario has happened to my friend that purchased his the same time I did.

I wish I could have spoken with the Gateway support desk prior to purchasing because the support desk at Gateway say this is not uncommon. Had I known, I would have purchased a different brand.

Plasma repairs are extremely expensive, so invest a little more money up front to prevent spending a whole lot in the end. Gateway Plasma's are definitely sub standard.

If you have to have this Gateway Plasma, BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, you will definitely need it!!

---------------------------------

13 month and it's junk
by tkschmit,Aug 09 '04
Pros: Good price
Cons: until it fails and is worthless

I am told by gateway that my power board is fried and can not be replaced. It's basically a $2500 piece of junk art-work. Gateway will only sell me a new unit at a few hundred off. HAHA If you can, get an extended warranty now!

How can us losers get the message to Gateway?

---------------------------------

Don't buy a Gateway Plasma TV
by fuzzyfujita,Apr 21 '04
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Everything

Don't even bother. Problems after problems with Gateway. Don't bother calling Tech Support, Sales or Customer Service.

This was a display model at the Gateway store and I paid 1100 for it. Cheap of course, but when I got it home the images were all crappy. I called Gateway for service on it, and they wanted $1001.00 to be exact. Forget that, I just ended up selling it.

They will just patch you over to different departments to assure you things will get taken care of. Nothing will happen.

---------------------------------

DO NOT BUY A GATEWAY PLASMA!!!!

Pros: none

DO NOT BUY A GATEWAY PLASMA!!!!

I am one of the early adaptors and bought a "42 Gateway 3 weeks before they shipped. I have had this unit for 2 years and the Logic board just failed. The repair cost quoted will be $900.00.

I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER GATEWAY PRODUCT EVER.

---------------------------------

My horror story is worse than all the others
by griffjm,Sep 12 '04
Pros: nice picture from a wide viewing area, great for a narrow room
Cons: need I say anything else!

Since my first plasma arrived in March '03 I have had eternal frustration w/ Gateway. The first was scratched and replaced, May '03. That one had an image board issue, the volume automatically began dropping by Nov. Image Board replaced. Jan '04 another service appointment for functions that weren't functioning, replaced 2/04. In April the TV electronic eye went( we could no longer change channels) Gateway insisted it was the remote and ordered a new remote. New remote eventually arrived via world trip to Vegas the last week in July. Surprise, it doesn't work. By now the warranty has expired, but they had promised me one more appointment if the remote wasn't the issue. TV 5 is ordered 3 delivery appointments( mess up in communications in the Gateway triangle) and the TV arrives DOA!!!!!! TV 6 is ordered and 2 canceled appointments later I am still waiting to hear from them.
I am in the process of looking into media and legal actions. IT sounds like many of us have been screwed by Gateway.

hehe thats wild! Of course you can find 10 or 20 good complaints about just about anything if you want to.
But those seem to indicate that my TV is about to fail. I'll post here if it fails. Was sorta free to me, so no biggy, although I'd be pissed.
Honestly I dont think I would have spent money on one from any manufacturer unless it was purely disposable income. Thats how electronics seem to be these days..

I've got the 42" sony '05 model mounted on my wall, and it's great, though it's about 4X that asking price.

You get what you pay for.
