:mad Service pack 2 uinstall ...

Don't do it. I just did. Now I completely fucking destroyed my XP installation. I can't repair or go into safemode either.

So now I am on a new install, while backing up the many gigs of data. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish that Microsoft wasn't so sneaky when you install their "support"

XP Service Pack 2 and Microsoft

Not a good fucking day.

Yeah it's completely bullshit. I was just using my computer and it started to slow down every day I used service pack 2. Why? No idea. My harddrive activity was very limited, and it kept acting like it couldn't read enough data at one point...so I went ahead and uninstalled it. Wow, problem solved...or so I thought. It was working fine up until I went to restart it. And then, it kept giving me a bluescreen and restarted continusly. I was able to get into Safemode but came to find out that it wanted to turn off system restore before I went and uninstalled it. So I did so. Now I was faced with not being able to go back (man I miss the scanreg days). And so yeah, tomorrows the rest of my backing up day to get this computer back online. Fuck windows, lol.

If you want to install sp2 and have it preform like the rock solid microsoft product it is your be best to reformat and install sp2 via a slipstream install (integrated into the actual windows image).

instructions on how to make a slipstream image

http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsX...p2-bootcd.html

I did this and so far so good, but SP2 is just another steaming pile of shit, reminiscent of you all.

HOLLA

What's srange is I never use automatic updates, but suddenly my java updater appeared in the tray for a couple of days nagging me to install downloaded updates. When I finally clicked enough to see what it was, it said something about SP2. Not sure why that program was trying to install Windows Updates, but I turned it off.

well apparently the reason for it to want to install "updates" is because I guess Microsoft slips it in with another update and while using an internet connection -- based on the connection of course -- it goes ahead and start preloading it in the background. so before you know it, it's on your system and you don't even know how it got there.

another lovely microsoft day. sigh...

In Control Panel there is an applet called Automatic Updates. Click that and there's a place to check to turn off auto uppdates.

I have 2 machines on XP Professional. My machine at home...installed SP2 and it was great...for about 5 days. Then it started collapsing the OS. The first thing that went out was my PC's ability to install the drivers for my CD-ROM's on bootup. Tried to fix that and eventually the OS was completely incapable of loading fully. Before figuring out it was SP2 I ordered a new motherboard for my machine (based on Dell's highly professional assertion that my motherboard was fucked...idiots). I replace my motherboard and no change.

Finally, I spoke to someone at Dell who knew what the fuck they were talking about. Seems there were clear indications it was a software issue. There's 4 LED lights on the back of a Dell. A, B & C were green....D was yellow. That's the indicator that there is a severe software problem.

So, I had to do a complete format...didn't really lose anything since I back my shit up but the inconvenience sucked balls. And, no...I did *not* update the OS to SP2...never will again.

Now...my machine at my office is a Dell Precision Workstation. I updated that with SP2 before my home machine and I have had absolutely no problems with it...yet. I continue to hold my breath (and back my shit up to the server every time I close Photoshop).

So, there you have it...one good experience and one nightmare from the same software. As they say in Japan (if you have installed SP2), "rots of ruck."
