I have 2 machines on XP Professional. My machine at home...installed SP2 and it was great...for about 5 days. Then it started collapsing the OS. The first thing that went out was my PC's ability to install the drivers for my CD-ROM's on bootup. Tried to fix that and eventually the OS was completely incapable of loading fully. Before figuring out it was SP2 I ordered a new motherboard for my machine (based on Dell's highly professional assertion that my motherboard was fucked...idiots). I replace my motherboard and no change.
Finally, I spoke to someone at Dell who knew what the fuck they were talking about. Seems there were clear indications it was a software issue. There's 4 LED lights on the back of a Dell. A, B & C were green....D was yellow. That's the indicator that there is a severe software problem.
So, I had to do a complete format...didn't really lose anything since I back my shit up but the inconvenience sucked balls. And, no...I did *not* update the OS to SP2...never will again.
Now...my machine at my office is a Dell Precision Workstation. I updated that with SP2 before my home machine and I have had absolutely no problems with it...yet. I continue to hold my breath (and back my shit up to the server every time I close Photoshop).
So, there you have it...one good experience and one nightmare from the same software. As they say in Japan (if you have installed SP2), "rots of ruck."
