How to filter out the sound from a song to get vocals only?

Any ideas how to do that with an mp3?

You're not likely to get a clean vocal track seperated out from of a heavy music mix, but you could try using EQ to cut out all frequencies that are above/below the range of the voice. That would clear the vocals up a bit, but other instruments will (probably) still be overlaping those freq's.

IIRC there is also software that attempts to do this another way, by recording a 'pattern' of the music and then removing that pattern from the mix - I don't believe that works perfectly either tho.

hmm, what kind of hardware would I actually need then? Just curious about it, since many radio stations can do it, cut vocals, and cut the sound too sometimes

Buy a Kareoke CD with the track you want on it, assuming it's a semi-popular song.

Maybe I didnt explain it well enough in the topic and in my post, I want to extract the voice from a song, so I can save the vocal track from an mp3..

No hardware; just a PC and any decent recording program ... there's dozens of them + specialized effects plugins for just this sort of thing. But I don't really know how it would be possible without either 1) losing some vocal frequencies, or 2) some of the music bleeding in .... Unless it's rap or something where the electronic bass beat is so far away acoustically from the vocals range that they don't overlap.
