How to filter out the sound from a song to get vocals only?

GoldWave, a free audio editor, have this feature.

You're not likely to get a clean vocal track seperated out from of a heavy music mix, but you could try using EQ to cut out all frequencies that are above/below the range of the voice. That would clear the vocals up a bit, but other instruments will (probably) still be overlaping those freq's.

IIRC there is also software that attempts to do this another way, by recording a 'pattern' of the music and then removing that pattern from the mix - I don't believe that works perfectly either tho.

hmm, what kind of hardware would I actually need then? Just curious about it, since many radio stations can do it, cut vocals, and cut the sound too sometimes

Buy a Kareoke CD with the track you want on it, assuming it's a semi-popular song.

Maybe I didnt explain it well enough in the topic and in my post, I want to extract the voice from a song, so I can save the vocal track from an mp3..

No hardware; just a PC and any decent recording program ... there's dozens of them + specialized effects plugins for just this sort of thing. But I don't really know how it would be possible without either 1) losing some vocal frequencies, or 2) some of the music bleeding in .... :shrug: Unless it's rap or something where the electronic bass beat is so far away acoustically from the vocals range that they don't overlap.
