Share your day of 9/11 three years ago ...

I was sitting in my office when my friend told me they had hit the WTC. I of course thought he meant the WTC here in Amsterdam, which is close to Schiphol Airport.

Turned on CNN, the rest is history. Weird day, or week rather.

I was running an excavator loading dump trucks on a new site and it came over my radio in the excavator. We all thought it was a small single engine plane at first cause that's what the news stations were reporting at the very beginning down here...it's a day I will always remember though. I can still feel the air on that day . I remember what the sky looked like. Does anyone remember how weird it was to look up and see no vapor trails from ANY aircraft? That still bothers me when I think back about it.

Was at night, was watching rumble in the jungle on TV. Saw that a plane had hit the WTC, I figured it was a small non-commercial plane. Abit later it interupted the broadcast to news that another plane had hit the other building. Watched for a while, went to sleep. Next day went to my exams, came home, watched the news.

Were you bugging out with all the military in this area? I was kind of freaked out cause I live so close to oceana. This was when the Pentagon plane and the Pennsylvania plane were still in the air.

Weird things you remember about such days, that day was the first time I saw Aaron Brown on TV. I thought he was a rookie reporter who had his break on TV, later I learned he was already well established, shortly after that day we got NewsNight here too, we didn't earlier.

That's probably about the same time as the new addition was going up at ODU. Not the "Ted" but the new school addition to the main building. I was actually one of the foreman on that project lol.

I was driving my daughter to school and listening to Howard Stern on the radio. Howard was interviewing a friend over the phone when Howard and his crew started saying "Oh my god, a plane has hit the WTC....OMG, OMG....I wasn't sure if it was a joke or not...the person on the phone didn't believe Howard...he thought it was some sort of joke too....finally Howard said "you can see the WTC from your balcony....walk over to your balcony and look"....a few seconds later...a shaky voice said "OMG ,OMG it's real...I have to go". By that time I was in the driveway and rushed up to our office to tell my husband. He said someone had told him about it...but he thought it was just a small plane or something...no big deal...so we turned on the TV in time to see the second plane hit.

I then continued to watch as I tried to calm down a couple people I know on ICQ who couldn't get through on phone lines and were trying to contact people via ICQ for any additional information. One persons husband worked at the Pentagon (he ended up safe) and another had a son who worked at the WTC. The son had worked for the same company for 3 years and never missed one day of work. He went in sick or well and never even took a vacation day. For some reason on that particular day he woke up not feeling very good and decided to take his very first day off of work. That decision saved his life.

I know I feel the same way about living so close to Tampa, since MacDill AFB is the command center for the war!

I was coming home from College and heard it on the news in the car. I was shocked. Got home and turned on the TV and I don't think I moved for about 3 hours. Just sat watching the news, not believing what I was seeing.

I was 5000 miles away in Scotland but even over here we felt the full effect of it. The roads were quiet, and no one was about. I think everyone was watching TV.

Not one of the best days in my life, it was very sad.

For me I was working in London & we had the TV on in the office. Within 20 minutes all of London was buzzing with police cars and everything being shutdown & some of the buildings apparently being evacuated.

It was 6am-ish on the West Coast. A ringing phone stirred me from sleep. The voice on the other end was a good friend, a retired Navy Command Master Chief, Paula.

She asked, "Are you watching TV?" "Hell no, you just woke me up." "Well," she said, "turn it on. We're under attack. They're evacuating the White House and we may go under Marshal Law."

By now, I had wandered into the living room and clicked on the TV. I was also holding a dead phone as she had hung up.

I stood there amazed at what I was looking at. As my wife came in, rubbing her eyes, she asked what was the matter. I pointed at the picture on the TV and said, "You see that building? That tower? There should be TWO of them!"

Shortly, the second tower fell.

My entire city suddenly turned into a ghost town. No one was on the streets who didn't have to be there.

Using weapons such as I saw that day, no one had to tell me that we were at WAR. A very different type of war that this country had never experienced.

It was the Day the US Changed.

I woke up, ate breakfast and was getting ready to turn on the computer and start working. The TV wasn't even on yet. My son called from college and asked me what I though about what was going on. I turned on the TV and both towers had already been hit. They were already realizing it was planned at that point. I told him I was going to pick him up and bring him home!

I called my parents and my Dad was gone - driving down to ATL for a meeting and my Mom pointed out my son was safe where he was . My Dad heard it on the radio and turned around and came home.

One of my best friends from HS is a flight attendant for AA so as with ANYTHING that has AA crashing, I called her to make sure she was OK and she was.

And of course, the rest of the day I was glued to the TV along with everyone else.

Was sitting on the train with a friend of mine. We were talking about how unsafe skyscrapers seemed to us, and how easy it would be to knock one down with an airplane or something.

Was pretty weird to hear what had just happened only a few minutes after that

one of the most terrifying tragedy of my life and surely the rest of the world would complete for the thousands of lives lost. It was late mid when i heard the news and it was like watching a movie caught on actual video.

it has been three years and still justice is still not served for the victims.

I was 30,000 feet up in the air, flying from London to Dallas.
We were about an hour or so flight from NY or the east coast when the planes struck the towers.

The plane made a U-turn, as US airspace got closed off, and we landed in a small town called Gander, Newfoundland, where I sat in the plane on the tarmac for about 7 more hours before being let off. The BBC came on the speakers in the plane, and we learned what happened.

Then I slept in a church, on a church bench, for 4 days, before being flown back to London, then to Copenhagen.

Here's a website about it:
http://www.theganderconnection.org/

Everyone should take a look at that website, these people sure restored faith in humanity for me.

I was listening to Howard Stern. I think it was Stuttering John that came in and said that one of the Trade Center building was on fire. I turned on the TV and saw the second plane go in. Then just went numb for a few hours.

My radio alarm came on about 5 minutes before the first plane hit ... all the sudeen the DJ goes "Oh my God, something terrible just happened ... BUT I HAVE TO TAKE A COMMERCIAL BREAK, because that's my job."

A few minutes later, after the commercials, he told us what had happened .... headed to the TV in time for the second fuckin' plane ... and stayed there pretty much all day. Crazy.

And all I was going for was Brad Shaw's housewarming party in Dallas.

Actually it wasnt that bad, especially compared to all the lost lives and tragedies in NY, but it gave me a whole new perspective of life.

This small town took in around 40 international flights, gave us food and shelter, I am forever grateful to these people.
The un-selfishness of these fantastic people still raise the hairs on my back. I actually had a very pleasant time there, despite the whole tragedy. I gave a considerable amount to the Salvation Army a couple years ago when they had a TV-campaign. Also to the Norwegian Sea-man's Church.

I actually slept besides a woman from Saudi Arabia on that church bench. She was real worried about going back then...

Also there were arabs on our flight back to London, we had to have an escort every time we went to the toilet.

They made a book about the whole thing:

"The day the world came to town"
http://www.popmatters.com/books/revi...-to-town.shtml

I was actually at the bank that morning opening up a new bank account when I happened to run into one of my cousins who told me what had happened and when I got home I turned on foxnews and watched for the rest of the day... I lived in newton massachusetts at the time and it's about 5 miles from boston and all day I would hear f-16s flying over my house a little weird to say the least after seeing the planes flying into the towers over and over...

Also, we were the 3rd plane to land, and everybody was let off by their turn, so we were the 3rd set of passengers to get off ( international flights were first )... So we got off after 7 hours, the last planes landing got off after 37 hours or so I think...
I was going crazy after the 7 hours on the tarmac + the 5-6 hours from London. I cannot imagine what they must have felt like.

Also, the last off the planes had to sleep outside, as there was simply no room for them in this small town.

I knew something was very wrong and turn on the tv. I watch the 2nd pland hit the tower.
I was terrified then the first tower collapsed.
I will allways remember that day as was it yesterday.

I'll give you a little more than what I was doing, I wrote this the very night this happened. And Naughty, I do believe I spent the better part of the day talking to YOU, if I am not mistaken. You wanted to contact me, as I was in the states, and check to make sure I was ok. VERY sweet of you and I haven't ever forgotten that. You and a few others out of the country did this, and it warmed me to know I had so many that cared enough to check on me, even if I wasn't anywhere near this, and you all knew it, it just made me feel good that you cared enough to take the time.

This is MY 911 Day
I had to move it to a new domain because I don't own the one it was on then, but this is unedited and in tact from the day I wrote it.

Happened just before a client meeting (was a consulting network engineer at the time). The client had offices in New York. After a few minutes we gave up on trying to do business and went back to the office and watched on TV there.

Really freaked me out when Bush went to SAC HQ in Nebraska. I thought much bigger shit was on the way. All commercial aircraft grounded and the President is in a bunker......

Back then I was daytrading (stockmarket). All of a sudden I noticed the market started to go south so I turned on euronews just in time to see the first tower get hit. I pretty much sat there, more or less paralyzed. Eventually the second plane came and I remember thinking whoever were on those floors would not make it out alive. Well, after that we all know what happened so..

At the time I had a gf who worked just north of central park, so sitting here in sweden I was naturally scared to death. Took me hours but I finally managed to get hold of her roommate who told me she was ok.

I still remember this as one of the most traumatic days in my life.

I was at home and was checking on my stocks.
They gave a desturbing pic and I was sure those numbers where not right so I turned on my tele so I could watch the stocks through teletekst or see a message that the computer at the stock exchange was having problems. I was in time to see the 2nd plane hot the twin tower. I still hear the echo of the reporter realizing that this could not be an accident any longer....
