45-Years old and you're working as a sales rep at Sears? Give me a break..

There is nothing worst then wasting your life away. I was at Sears looking at lcd tv's, and the sales rep was in his late 40's... I got into conversation with him and he said that he has worked there for a little over 10 years.

If I was in his shoes, I would put a bullet in my head. What is life if you spend it doing nothing? Wasting so much time that you work at Sears, not even a fucking manager! Just a regular grunt.

He probobly makes 20-25k a year...but if it makes him happy, then who am I to say he has lived a wasted life? My opinion? I will never settle for ordinary, and I dont believe that anyone else should either.

Get an education, get a good job, get a life worth living!

This is a random rant because I'm buzzed...getting to be drunk though, quite soon . just a few more drinks..

Growing up in the 70's, my buddy's dad was a shoe salesman at the big Eaton's store in downtown Winnipeg. He was a good man, a good provider for his family, and had a good average middleclass life going.

I took note of guys like him and never forgot their example...... which is largely why I set the goal to get free of my *career* by the time I was 40.

This business helped me to realize my goal 3 years ahead of schedule. If only we'd had an internet back in the early 80's like it is today, I say.

I wouldnt put anybody down for working to earn a living for their family. no matter what they do. Some people settle for less in life, but its hard to make life altering decisions when you have a family to care for. This guy probably has kids and a wife at home, at least hes working to feed them.

either that or hes a hardcore loser with no ambition and a love of cheap booze and cheaper women. what the hell do I know..
just my

I see people like the one I mentioned all the time, and I promise myself that I will never be where they are when I hit that age.

I have the highest goals out of anyone I know. They all tell me that it is impossible to get to where I want. I tell them that it is impossible for them, because they don't know how to realize their dreams.

Exactly. He's working and not taking money from the taxpayers. He's A-OK in my book

He can have a regular paycheck at McDonalds too...employee discounts? who the hell cares about employee discounts? Why limit yourself to what you can achieve? That was my whole point.

Don't judge man. Not cool. A lot of old-school establishment types from back in the 20's, 30's, 40's, right on up to the 70's, 80's and 90's have passed on their "job mentality" to their kids and on to their kids and so on. Lots of people have that mentality.... that unless they have a *job* they are nothing.

I've always said it is the hardest road of all to become wealthy while working for somebody else. All you usually do with a J O B is to make your employer rich, all you get out of it is a living, not a life.

I stopped wanting to be a slave to a job back in the early 90's, and set goals, tried various side businesses over the years.... but the one that I realized the most success with was in website development, particularly adult.

But I have never forgotten the examples that good men like my dad and that other dad showed me, on how to just be happy too. A person can chase the dreams and the almighty dollar all their life and never be happy, while a shoe salesman can live a wonderful life with a loving family. It's about balance. Have the dreams, but know when to appreciate what you have.

If one is going to insult somebody?s level of education then perhaps one should start by demonstrating an educational background that is superior to that of the individual being insulted.

"Worst" is not the correct word for that sentence. I believe what you meant to say was:

"There is nothing worse then wasting your life away."

?Going a step further? The word ?then? is also not used correctly. A fully revised sentence follows for your future usage:

"There is nothing worse than wasting your life away."

Now...Normally I would have let this slide but not when you are insulting the educational background of another.

Your continued ignorance about this issue, in this thread, indicates that it was not a typo at all but rather a lack of education that attributed to your incorrect usage of the words "Worst" and ?then."

Any questions?

I think your "give me a break" and "put a bullet in my head" comment was the one the made you come off as thinking you are better then this person....

Very good point, Aaron..but I don't try to prove my education level by the way I spell words. I know what I intended to say, and so did you. I wasn't writing what I wrote to impress anyone.

But in all reality, my point about education is this: A person with a degree is more likely to be successfull in the long run compared to a high school graduate.

People in this country(USA) look at degree's and refrences rather then street smarts.

About 7-8 years ago, my parents bought new appliances from Sears...bought a new stove, fridge, washer/dryer from the same sales guy. This guy was real pro at selling too, there was literally a line up of customers waiting to talk to him...I'm sure he made way more than 20-25k a year. I bet his base salary was even higher than that, plus he must have made a good chunk of his pay through commissions.

My parents even told me when they bought their first set of appliances, they bought it from the same sales man too.

More likely.... yes.
Always true?....... no.

I've known plenty of people who haven't even finished high school who are hugely successful.

Going into business for yourself doesn't take a degree. Usually the degree comes into play when you're sitting in front of someone else's desk sucking up for a job from them.

Which brings us back to my post about "job mentality".

People in this country(USA) look at degree's and refrences rather then street smarts.
And people look at the way you act, the way you spell, and the way you carry yourself.

If you are saying someone needs to get an education to better themselves, but yet you write like you need education.....you seem like a stupid hypocrite.

You don't try to prove your education by what you write as long as you understand what you meant? You would never get higher in the corporate word than an assistant to the assistant to the mail clerk. I could see you telling your boss "But I know what I meant. Doesn't matter how I wrote it."

your spelling wasnt questioned, it was your grammar.
second, college degrees dont mean much anymore. look at all the rich nerds who took a mcse class, got a certification and now make more then you. i wouldnt be supprised if most of the people here who make 6-7 figures dont have a degree in anything related to what they now do.

anyway, I am just a disgusted idiot that thinks the guy at sears is doing a great job. I always appreciate a nice sales person no matter what age he/she is.
Let me clarify --

this guy wasn't a good salesmen, and I think he has had enough with customers over the past ten years. But he has yet to do anything about it. He still goes to work every day and takes shit from the same people.

From what I gathered, he was not enjoying his time at Sears, and his attitude was not that of a 'happy' salesmen.

So when you feel like that, then why waste your time doing it for ten years?

I disagree with you.

Ten years ago my wife picked up while I was working in a fast food joint. What my wife didn't know is that I really worked full time at the phone company making $70k a year and worked the lunch rush "just for kicks" (and to pick up chicks).

My wife, who has a college education, doesn't make a lot of money. While she's qualified to do a lot more the truth is she doesn't need to work, enjoys her job, doesn't take it too seriously, doesn't have to work nights or weekends, gets free medical benefits, time off when ever she wants, and it works with our daughter's day care.

My point is you don't know this guy's full story. Maybe he won the lottery ten years ago and does this to keep himself busy.

Check it?

I'm a high school drop out.

I've done assloads of retail sales and customer service grunt jobs.

Now I make more each month off my GFY sig than the average GFY'er makes in a month pushing galleries.

Oh...And I have a few other "small" adult and mainstream businesses on the side.

I'll be financially independent within 5 years.

Education means fuck all if you don't have personal goals and the determination to move forward instead of barely getting by....Not to mention a little common sense.

I reread your first post. Nice complete change of story.

Bro, take a second and think about where I'm posting this message. I'm not trying to get in good with anyone here at GFY.

Do you honestly believe that if I was to write for a major corporation that I would simply write what I fell gets the point across? Fuck no...

This is GFY. You're wasting your time trying to be gramatically correct here.

Oh my, I'm starting to see where this is going to be one of those endlessly one-sided debates.

I refer to education mainly in this guys case. He is working for someone else, he is not independant. So why waste your time working for someone else and barely making a decent living? Why not invest a little time and effort into trying to climb the ladder?

Of course you don't need a degree to start your own business, but this guy is not starting his own business.

Yeah, I can't imagine being 45+ and making the kind of wages these guys pull down. I'm 20, and easily pull down more than 30k a year working 2 hours a day from home - I can't imagine how hard it must be making the same amount at 45, having to support a family, and working at a shitty dead end job.

You can easily tell this guy has two major issues that will hurt him in life.

1. You can't lie well. Changed his whole story to try and look better, yet made himself look worse. You can be a very successful person if you lie well. If you lie bad, you will worse off if you never did.

2. You has a huge ego that he is better than most, yet he has nothing to back it up.

I feel sad for guys like this.

Maybe he is an Amway Diamond and works there so he can network to find more people for his food chain?

You will never get it. Reread your post and compare against people that even agree with your opinion. Maybe if you read it enough, you will understand why you are getting bashed.

I don't have a huge ego. I never stated that I'm better then this person.

My entire point of this thread was that if you're going to work for someone for ten + years, make something out of it instead of always taking shit from managers who keep changing every five years.
