Barry Bonds closing in on 700 career Home runs

With 694 home runs on his career Barry Bonds should eclipse 700 by the end of this season becoming only the third player in MLB history to reach the milestone.

Bonds is 40 years old. Do you think he has it in him to break the all-time record set by Hank Aaron? He will catch Ruth early next season. If he sticks around until 2006 there is a chance he will break the record.

Age and the fact that pitchers refuse to pitch to him are the only things setting him back.

If he breaks the record it will surely be the biggest accomplishment in American sports in my life time.

Top three career home run leaders:

Player At bats HR AVG. SLG%
1,AARON 12364 755 .305 .555

2,RUTH 8399 714 .342 .690

3,BONDS 9024 694 .300 .609

If Babe Ruth didn't spend his first five years as a pitcher or if he didnt party and get suspended so much

I wonder how many he could of got in total..

When Babe Ruth played the seasons were shorter. I don't think you can ever compare anyone to Ruth, he was hitting more home runs then any other whole teams were at the time.

I think what Bonds is doing is amazing in that he is 40 years old and out playing everyone else in the sport. It would be cool if opposing picthers would just man up and throw to him more often. Also, Bonds will break definitly break and own the home run record before he retires, he is showing NO signs of slowing down so he has a few years left. Who knows maybe he'll play ntil he's 50 lol.

Excuse me??? Which years were these? You have no idea what you're talking about.

There's his seasonal stats....do try and point where exactly in this career that he "sucked ass for years".

What most amazes me about Bonds is how much of a performance dropoff he'd need to have to just be a run-of-the-mill allStar candidate. He's truly on his own planet like noone since Ruth.

look at all his stats 86-91 versus the past 5 years. look at slg% in his early years. Its very obvious, some are just blind. Its all good

but juice can be the difference between 30 and 50 homers. bat speed is more important that pure strength, but you need strength to hit homers regardless.

yeah, he sucked ass in 90 and 91

The only year he was below-average was '86, his first season.

Um, you do realize a lot of those stats when he was younger came when he was a leadoff hitter? He was more about the stolen base than the homerun

It's illegal because the commissioner is under pressure to do something...

do you have some scientific data to back this up (the difference between 30 and 50)? I'd like to see it please.

players dont hit their prime till about 27/28sh

he was a top of the order guy early in his career as well. he was asked to get on base and steal.

as he matured as a hitter and gained more power, he turned into a #3 hitter in a line up and one of the best players in the league.

common sense would tell you that more strength equals more home runs.

same thing with increasing bat speed.

scientific proof often overrides "common" sense...

it might increase a couple dingers, but Bonds doesn't hit homers that just drop over the fence...

he had two homers tonight that were both hit over 460 feet...

that's ok though, a lot of white people hate when people of color break records...look at the death threats that Hank Aaron got when he was chasing Ruth...

increase a couple dingers? it would be like using titanium bats. gear can increase strength by a large margin. you don't see too many skinny guys belting out home runs now do you? strength is a factor and you can do your own research at espn.com. look at your typical middle infielders(who are smaller and typically not as strong) compare them to first basemen/left fielders who are typically much bigger and stronger.

then you can pay scientists to figure out the correlation between strength and home runs for mlb players if you want actual real numbers from a study.

so, that increased strength had to have come from steroids rather than conditioning?

bonds has been linked to that steroid case over the winter. guys 40 years old and his power has gone through the roof. guys get stronger in their early 30s not late 30s.

most major league players are on gear just like conseco said. but nobody will know because they don't want info like that coming out.

then you can pay scientists to figure out the correlation between strength and home runs for mlb players if you want actual real numbers from a study.
sorry, I think I misread one of your posts...reading Veteran's Day's posts dropped my IQ a couple points...
yes, the 'roids will add strength, but still won't affect hand-eye coordination...and watching his swing, it's just the perfect swing, and doesn't rely on brute strength as much as contact and timing...

most major league players are on gear just like conseco said. but nobody will know because they don't want info like that coming out.
I'm aware of the BALCO case

maybe he was a late bloomer? I just think it does a disservice to his accomplishments to cry "steroids" because of the take off late in his career...

i don't think it is a knock on what he's done. most players take gear, but bonds has the talent to put it to good use.

there are late bloomers, but he goes against human nature. even with steroids, its mind boggling that he's not slowing down. which is why i can't believe he's not on steroids. if he's not, they should cut him up and make sure he's not an alien.
