I also spoke to an Andrew in the live chat..he is the one that told me he would email in an hour. A little bit ago I went in and talked to a Mike. Now, I think those are 'anglo' names given to over seas staff because they didn't talk in the kind of syntax a native English speaker would. Nothing wrong with that as long as they can understand what is being asked and aren't just looking for keywords.

I went back in and asked Mike where my email was because I had more domains I wanted to register but I wasn't going to until I knew this was above board. Mike told me that domains take up to 48 hours to be registered and then I would get an email with information on how to access my domain manager.

However, Mike never did answer why the email I got after I talked to the guy on the phone talked about hosting when I told him on the phone I don't want hosting. I am watching my cc bill very closely. If it all goes okay then I will order more.

Here's the email I got a good while after I ordered.

Dear Pimp Daddy,

Registration for your new Domain Name has been received and submitted to the Global Registry.

Your Registration number is: AP2696969

Typically, this registration process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few business days.
Once your order has been confirmed with the Global Registry, an email will be sent to your contact email with your order confirmation status.

Your domain name registrar is Names4Ever.com, a division of Aplus.Net.
Names4Ever.com is an ICANN (Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers) accredited registrar.

I use 10-domains....650 each (must buy lots of 100...but you dont have to reg em all at once)

It's sooo fucking easy, I can reg 100 at a time no problem, and all automatically have the standard dns I use for em.

And they are automatically locked and the support is....a little slow but still good.

Steen2,

Can you give me a quick overview of how the whole behind the scenes action works with registrars etc.

If enom pays verisign $6 per .com etc how are some other registrars able to charge $3.99 $5.99 etc.

Who is in charge of the whole thing?

Thanks,

Spankstrocko

They get better prices from verisign by prepaying for the domains in massive bulk ,
I'm guessing they must have invested some serious amounts of money to get the prices that low

FAQ:

Quote:
Q) How do I find out what the renewal fee for my domain name is?
A) We will advise you to the renewal fee for your domain name closer to the time of renewal, so you will have enough time to make a decision about what to do with your domain name.
????????????? doesn't sound good.

Quote:
Q) How do I transfer an existing domain name to DomainsAreFree?
A) We currently do not offer this service. You can only register and maintain new domain names with us.
this also bothers me. why? aren't they fully accredited? buyer beware.

Okay, update.

This was *so* much fun I could almost spit. I went to re-check my whois about 40 minutes ago and now I could read the information but it was registered to their company. I was rather unhappy as I still hadn't had an email from them OTHER than the one that suggested I took hosting when I didn't. So, I went back to the chatroom and got Andrew again (or someone with that name again) and got a bit more forceful. I demanded to know where the email was that 'Andrew' promised I would get within the our some 24 hours ago and also why my domain information carried their name and company and I had no access to a domain manager to change that information,

Andrew gave me this url:
http://access.enom.com/ from there I was able to log in with the password I gave when I bought the domain and change that information and my nameservers. I don't know if he just set that up for me or it if is automatically set up and I just never got the email. However, I have no problem at all sharing that domain for the others of you that did register. Check the whois on the ones you tried to register and if it is showing up complete go there and try to login and change info.

I still am waiting for 'Andrew' to email me confirm I was not charged for any hosting.

btw, the domain details were British.

i just got off a 30 minute phone call with domainsarefree.com, it's totally not worth the hassle they put you through. they want to offer you some cheap ass hosting and will not take no for an answer. their tech guy couldnt handle the abuse i was dishing out so he finally gave up. he kept wanting to tell me he would submit my website to hundreds of search engines for free, and that my website would load faster if i use their hosting b/c they offer more bandwidth/month.
as for dot5hosting, theyve requested scanned copies of my credit card since my account was flagged as fraudulent.
my advice? totally not worth the hassle for either of these.

Dot5hosting is a pretty reputable hosting company too, so I'm sure they wouldn't allow a scam to rise to the surface to pollute the integrity of their business.
No for sure it's not a scam.. but there's something that we still didn't saw !

From reading all these threads...

I'll just dish out the extra money to get a domain on Directnic.

Only time I'd use this is if I was buying in bulk.

I register around 100 or so a month. Best site / service I have found is www.cnobin.com

$6.50 per domain, take paypal, live support, api, kickass admin, prebuilt customisable reseller panel.

They rock.

I get that a lot because I am an american living in the UK and my CC is based in the US. That isn't too abnormal. Heck, a good number of content suppliers have asked me to do the same thing.

There is no bulk buying with verisign :p

Registrars pay $6 a name per year flat fee.

People charging less are pretty much making domains their "lost leader" (lose money, get people to the site) or scamming you

It says A-plus.net in this thread here on the second page.

When you register a domain there you cannot transfer it without paying a 30$ fee. Or leave it in there name ... Its pure bullshit

registrars pay $6/domain/year to the registry. that's their cost.

whatever they sell above that is their profit (ex: 7.95 enom).

these prices are not based on bulk orders but on the standard
registry fees. it doesn't matter if the registrar registers 10
domains or 100,000 domains, they still pay the $6.

so, $2.50 per domain means you're getting yourself into some
bullshit contract where like others said, you'll either have to
renew for an arm and a leg or you have to host it with them
and they rape you that way.

remember, you get what you pay for.

well, my domain is in my name now but Andrew still hadn't sent me an email to confirm the price and that I did NOT taking hosting. So, I called them and the guy barely spoke English, which isn't his fault but not fantastic on a help line.

I contacted them for orders of 200 or more, and the pricing structure is still the same.

I don't know how much more you need to purchase for a discount, if any.

That's the price. It's not $3. Enom makes its money from
resellers. They have hundreds of thousands of them. Pretty
much everyone in the domain game is a reseller of Enom.

Enom does not make money from scam sites, but there are a
handful of registrars that are pretty shady.

Anyways, if it IS an estimated $6, eNom earns some of its profit from "scam" sites such as iregistrations.com, and the such.

I will not get into such matters as they are complex and raise controversial issues.

Those who have been deep into the domain game know what I'm talking about.
you mean this?

sure you can when it take five people to tell you what exactly has been charged to your card.

Can you give me a quick overview of how the whole behind the scenes action works with registrars etc.

If enom pays verisign $6 per .com etc how are some other registrars able to charge $3.99 $5.99 etc.

Who is in charge of the whole thing?

Thanks,

Spankstrocko
They take a loss initially so they can draw you to their other services generally.

They get better prices from verisign by prepaying for the domains in massive bulk ,
No Verisign charges everyone $6 per registration and I believe ICANN charges an annual 12 cents per domain (however I am not 100% sure on that one).

In order to be a registrar you have to invest an amount that would pretty much guarantee you're dealing in bulk.

Lol! You rely on your "inside sources" than. It is public information (go read www.incann.org) how the registry works. Anyone (with the exception of MAYBE NSI) who is selling domains at under $6 is taking a loss somewhere in order to sell for those prices. Most of the "registrars" you see are actually reselling for eNom as Luc said. Simply because eNom has one of (if not) the best reseller programs going. But you keep to your "inside sources" who are paying Verisign $3 per domain

yup, I have had domains with them for the past year. I would still rather directnic but if there is a domain that I am not so sure about I register it there and transfer it later when it becomes more valuable to me.

From what it sounds like dot5 is definately fucking people around. I hate the fact companies are outsourcing so much customer service its just pathetic.

I am curious whats so good about eNom reselling? Anyone have some points to make on this subject it would be appreciated.

*nods* it is why I always put through one 'throw away' domain first as a test.
