$2.50 domain registrations

$2.50 domain regs are now available at: http://www.dot5hosting.com/

As far as I know, they are not making a profit on selling domains this way, so what's the catch?

cornhusker 08-22-2004 09:12 AM

Well, look if you want to register for multiple years.

1 for $2.50
2 for $10.00
3 for $20.00

Still looking for the rest of the catch. :Graucho

and more competitive pricing

PMdave 08-22-2004 09:14 AM

I see two possibilties
a/renewal cost is way higher
b/domains should be hosted with them

And I think it's a+b in this case

AdultNex 08-22-2004 09:15 AM

Yes, it's definitely competitive pricing, but how is this lucrative?

I know that eNom pays about $3.65/domain, but $2.50 for a domain sounds insane.

Dot5hosting is a pretty reputable hosting company too, so I'm sure they wouldn't allow a scam to rise to the surface to pollute the integrity of their business.

That's what I was thinking, is there a TOS? I can't seem to find one on their website.

Jdoughs 08-22-2004 09:17 AM

Oh wow blogger is included with their hosting packages...

consider all the free advertising they will get. this will completely overshadow yahoo's "big" pr about how they lowered prices to $9.99

:)

hopefully this will compel other registrars to lower even further. but who knows if the service suffers because they get overwhelmed with too many domain registrations.

I just checked with Dot5hosting support, and they said that the renewal cost is NOT highe and the domains do NOT have to be hosted with them.

Taboo 08-22-2004 09:26 AM

I think it's funny that they are called DOT5, but their logo has 6 dots in it. :)

Marcus Aurelius 08-22-2004 09:29 AM

nice price. they will do alot of volume to their site from a deal like that. always good for business. give one item away cheap and they might see something else they want on the way to checkout.

Doctor Dre 08-22-2004 09:35 AM

I really don't care about paying 5 $ more for my domain and be sure to have good quality service ...

AgentCash 08-22-2004 09:37 AM

Isn't the wholesale rate from Verisign $6 these days?

PMdave 08-22-2004 09:40 AM

Talked to their live support and they told me that the renewal fee is $7.95 but the domains can be hosted wherever you want

Taboo 08-22-2004 09:45 AM

anyone find their bulk register form yet?

:Graucho

Manowar 08-22-2004 09:45 AM

they can probably do it with all the publicity and business they get from news of it

Wow, talk about incompetent support. My support rep told me the renewal fee was not higher.

Oh well, $7.95 isn't too bad.

exposed 08-22-2004 10:21 AM

:thumbsup

GuestHouse 08-22-2004 10:39 AM

Anyone tried it yet?
I bet they register the domains in their own name :angel

Sounds a bit too good....

montel 08-22-2004 10:40 AM

seems this man gonna sell himself in the market !!

candyflip 08-22-2004 10:42 AM

Nice. I just got 10 new domains for my GalleryBooster project for $25.

Great fucking find!

GuestHouse 08-22-2004 11:08 AM

EviLGuY 08-22-2004 12:42 PM

Yeah then they lowered it to 70 for 2 years, but you didn't have to pay up front.. they'd bill you. :Graucho

Hosting-Quote 08-22-2004 01:16 PM

lol I remember getting free webspace with virtualave.net and paying $70 for a domain, but had to wait several months before they let me pay for it, by that time I had sold the domain for a descent profit :)

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

I had a crap load of sites hosted with them. They had probly the best free hosting plans out there.

Reak 08-22-2004 01:21 PM

there's always a catch.

Taboo 08-22-2004 03:16 PM

the catch is this:

their customer service SUCKS. nothing wrong with Indian Call Centers, but I asked a simple question,

"How do i reserve 10 domains at once?"

they replied, you need a virtual server.

so, I asked if they have a bulk register form so I can register 100 domains.

"For what?"

huh... I explained to register multiple domain names.

"Not possible, you must do one at a time"

HUH? wtf? I asked if I register 10 domains, does my card get charged ONCE for $25 or $2.50 a pop per domain.

"Not possible, you need a virtual host server account"

ugh. has anyone registered thru them yet? if so, have you received confirmation of domain being registered? and once you do, is it easy to register more via one-click?

seems like more trouble than it's worth. at this rate, I'll stick with $6.50 a pop.

strobi 08-22-2004 03:19 PM

2.5$/domain??? nice!!! Good thing for expired domain buyers :)

Sure that is something like that. Domains are also more expensive for reseller companies that the price that they are offering to registrants.

Thugmaster 08-22-2004 04:01 PM

A bit like Netscape did

Registered my domain 16 hours ago, still no confirmation mail and domain shows up as available.

Looks like someone's pulling my leg....

lazycash 08-23-2004 03:46 AM

I'm ready to register a ton at this price, but some of these posts are now scaring me off. Has anyone had any success registering through them and how is their control panel for managing the domain?

Taboo 08-23-2004 04:46 AM

something seems wrong. perhaps the $2.50 offer was just for .us and they didn't realize it. lots of companies offer .us on sale for $2.99. has anyone received confirmation? perhaps they run all their registrations 24 hours later, which means they get to "sort" through your list. i'll stick w/ $6.50

here's link to other cheap registrars:
http://thewhir.com/marketwatch/dot082004.cfm

"Domain prices have dropped rapidly across the industry in the last year as Web hosting companies use the dramatically low prices to attract customers in the hopes of selling them other more profitable services. In June, Globat began offering domains for $3.99 per year and 1&1 Internet is currently offering .us domains for $2.99 per year in a promotional offer. EV1Servers (ev1servers.net) and Hostway (hostway.com) have dropped their domain pricing to $6.49 and $6.95 respectively."

True, but I don't often need support for domain names.

spankstrocko 08-23-2004 06:39 AM

JayJay 08-23-2004 10:36 AM

strobi 08-23-2004 11:13 AM

anyone got a successfull register? Need to go throught some massive bulk registering....

spankstrocko 08-23-2004 11:17 AM

I just listened to a voice mail from someone saying to call the number on the site to finalize the domain registration. I couldn't make out the name of the company so I am just going to try Dot5 and see where I get with a phone call.

I'll post asap with news of the phone call.

Spankstrocko

JayJay 08-23-2004 11:57 AM

any news?

Sarah_Jayne 08-23-2004 11:59 AM

i registered one to see and I got a phone call (from a Brit btw..atleast his voice was) to confirm that I made the order. He also asked me if I wanted hosting. I said no but the email I got seems to suggest I ordered hosting as there are no directions on how to access my info and change the nameservers to my host. I went to their live chat and the person there told me that I didn't have hosting and that he would send me an email with details on how to access my name server, etc stuff in an hour. That was two hours ago. I am going to go back in there and find out again because I will register more domains but not until I know it works.

spankstrocko 08-23-2004 12:36 PM

Sarah,

I got the same guy that left me a voice message too. Andrew I think is his name. I tried calling their 866 number was never able to get to anyone. So I tried the live chat. I think I actually got andrew or they have more than one Andrews there. He was rude slow and said he would have an e-mail to me too. Still nothing as of yet.

Spankstrocko

JayJay 08-23-2004 02:53 PM

no one ever aswers that live chat thing
