I have a friend who is an attorney and worked for a legal aid sort of agency. He had to represent a woman who was very similar to the woman in this story. She was so obese she was bedridden and her hair was long and matted into dreadlocks. She was covered in her own waste AND had cockroaches and other parasites living on her body and in her hair. She was being evicted from her apartment and the state wanted the court to declare her incompetent. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the wall to get her out of the house. This woman fought the state claiming that just because she lived in filth that she wasnt crazy. My friend had to represent her legal rights and didnt believe she was crazy but almost wanted the court to rule against her just so she would get help.

She also had family that would bring her food but I don't know if they were ever charged with neglect.

But don't you think once it got past the point of no return, her family, neighbors...someone...ANYONE...should have done something? What I don't understand is that they looked at going after the family for this.

The article said the woman was 40 years old, if she let herself get to that point, it's her own fault. Yes, any normal family would have stepped in long before that, but by no means is it their responsibility to get her help.

Very sad that she died though.
