Why does the odometer on this Ferrari only go up to 80mph? It's a REAL Ferrari.

Odometer from a 1982 Ferrari 400i. One of my all time favourite classics.

It's from a real Ferrari, not a replica or shitty kit car.

But 80 miles per hour? WTF?!

That's Kilometers per hour on the outer dial and if you look in the inner dial it goes over 140 MPH.

Actually I think it really is the other way around, because 85MPH is approximately 140KPH.

If it were 140MPH, then the KPH should go up to 225.

The kilometers would have to be the larger number.
1 kilometer = 0.621371192 mile

So 140 KM is about 86 MPH

Number one, that is a speedometer, not an odometer, big difference, as an odometer measures distance, not speed.

To answer the question, because it was made for sale in the US, and in the 80's all cars had 80 MPH speedometers because there was an oil shortage and I guess Carter thought it would make people drive slower

yes, I noticed it, I highly doubt that you will find 80 MPH on an Italian version, but they aren't going to make different speedos for every country

I agree. If you look at the damn thing it has "mph" on the bottom - inside of the circle. On the top it has "kph" - on the outside of the circle.

The car is a Ferrari, made to be driven in Europe. They don't use miles in Europe. Thus, the mph is in the smaller numbers inside the circle.

Yes, but the outer numbers are the main focus of the speedometer. So is the "MPH" text, as indicated by its matching size. Driving at 50MPH would indicate you're travelling at 30KPH, which is completely backwards. If it is as you say, the car would be illegal for road use. Also, "55" is clearly marked on the outer numbers, because 55MPH was the speed limit instituted by Congress in 1974.

Ferrari might be European, but this picture was taken in a US Car (SoCal), VIN F101CL39637. Also, we do use miles in Europe, it depends on the country.

It reads mph on the bottom of the speedometer which indicates that the overall focus is on mph and it goes to 80, as was already pointed out because that was the limit of the dial allowed by the U.S. at the time the car was imported, even though as is indicated by the grey area, the speed was actually much greater on the original dial.

It says kmh just above the inner circle which does indeed indicate kph.

ROFL funniest quote of the day

1 mile = like 1.8 km or something

So it's km inside and miles outside

because most likely Ferrari does not make their own speedos, they get them from a company that makes 1,000's of speedos, and when you start doing bulk, those few cents start adding up
