do you opt for warranties?

i just bought a linksys wireless router for 80 bucks at circuit city and the cute cashier convinced me to get the 4 year warranty for 20 bucks... which doesnt seem like a bad idea since i bought a 120 dollar printer without the warranty last fall and its broken now!!!

I just got a Toshiba Celeron 2.8 15" laptop for $599 for my wife at best buy.

They wanted $99 for an extended 3 year warranty,,,how could I turn that down?

I helped pay for college by working a sales job part-time. I learned a *shitload* about sales by learning from the pro salespeople. Extended warranties are sucker sales that pay very high commissions.

Basically, extended warranties are just a way for retailers to make an additional 20% of pure profit from a sale. It's *very* rare that a defect will occur after the first few months of normal useage (they usually occur within the first 3 months). Remember, NO warranty will pay for damage that is accidentally caused; they only pay for *defects* that the item was sold with.

On the other hand, *insurance* on the item will pay for accidental damage, but is more expensive, if offered at all.

Extended warranties are sucker sales.

haha warranties. Especially on computer parts - who uses a computer part for more than a couple years? And at that point, it's time for an upgrade anyway.

Never. I just put that "warranty money" into an interest bearing account. If something goes wrong the money is there to get it fixed. If something does not happen I keep my money plus get interest on top of it.

I also have noticed most of those extended warranties do not cover jack shit. Not to mention they often overlap the manufactures warrenty that is free with purchase.

Elli is right. You don't need those warranties. It's expensive for nothing. Most companies offer at least 1-3 years warranty anyway.

Store warranties = ripoff

I never buy extended warranties... someone once said "If it breaks, it probably needed replacing anyway"...

For the most part they aren't worth it but for big ticket items that you know you will stick with I would go for it...

Electronics stores *always* try to sell you more than you need. If you don't believe them when they tell you your stereo needs more power and your computer is too slow, then why would you believe them when they tell you the manufacturer's warranty isn't good enough and they're just looking out for your best interests?

That router probably has 1 year warranty for free, so for one year you are covered. After a year that router will be worth probably $40. So in a way you paid $20 for insurance on a $40 item. Which doesn't seem THAT good of a deal.

I just bought some appliances, and I did buy the extended in Home warranty. Normally I dont bother, but this seemed like a good idea They are high end pieces , so I rather be covered than not.

SON OF A BITCH! oh well only 20 bucks for 4 years doesnt sound too bad. i got the 3 year warranty for my canon digicam that was 300 bucks over christmas and the guy told me i could just say the strap broke if i accidently dropped it, etc... and i would get whatever was the current 300 dollar camera.

as for cars, i'm very thankful i opted for my optional extended warranty... i've saved over a couple grand with it.

I never get the extended warranties.. if they weren't a ripoff the stores wouldn't push them so much.
