Teaching your kids to rock

How many of you with young kids are teaching them how to rock?

Ever since the movie School of Rock, my kids have become huge music (especially hard rock and metal) fans

The recently found my old cassette collection in the garage and have been dragging out tapes the last couple of days. It's great watching their faces light up and discover this music I grew up loving.

Motely Crue "Shout At The Devil", Killer Dwarfs "Deadly Weapons" Loudness "Soldier Of Fortune", Iron Maiden "Piece Of Mind" and "Number Of he Beast", Aerosmith "Toys In The Attic", Deep Purple "Perfect Strangers" amongst the many they are pulling out and loving. They are already AC/DC fanatics and even my 3 year old son can do the Angus Young duckwalk.

So, how many of you with kids under 10 or so are introducing them to some of these great rock bands?

Unfortunately, they aren't big on Van Halen (yet), but are totally in love with Black Sabbath, Rush, WASP and even some of Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force stuff...

brings a little tear to my eye.....

In June there was a Lil' Battle of the Bands.

Lil' Guns 'N Roses vs. Tiny Motley Crue

They had it at CGCBs in the Village, NYC.

I tell ya, it's great to have a 7 year old daughter who hates Britney Spears and loves AC/DC and doesn't mind telling her little friends that Britney sucks...

yeah, I was surprised....I normally hate those kinds of movies, but the fact the kids were so damn talented and not annoying as well as the subject of rocking out and the amazing performance by Jack Black...the DVD gets a LOT of play at the Sykk Household...

My ex is a musician so obviously my son was given the electric guitar/amp early. Funny thing is though he tends to lean towards the older music too. I think it is because the older stuff just sounds so damn good on an electric guitar!

this is the only thread that brought a tear to my eye.

people can die, but teaching kids to rock and about music is something beautiful.

i go into the misfits at age 12.

i cant wait to pass on all my music.

I remember my dad getting me into Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, etc. when I was a kid and I always appreciated it...he also got me into marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, willie Nelson, etc. and expanded my musicals tastes that direction too. So, I decided when my kids fell in love with the move "School Of Rock" that it was time for me to pass this music onto them as my dad did to me.

I just really need to find a copy of Blue Cheer's "Vincebus Eruptum" now to pass that along to the kids as well....there was a band that should have been legends like Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc. The stuff they did was so far ahead of it's time....

My son is 15 and started playing drums at 11. His main instrument now is bass but he also plays guitar and just bought an acoustic 12-string. Played his first show (with a now defunct band) back in April. His favorite band is Smashing Pumpkins. I'm a very proud father.

I'll have to check that out

I can't quite get my kids into the growly death metal stuff, but getting there...I'm easing them into it with SLAYER, old Metallica, old Megadeth, Venom, etc.

LIke you i was blessed.

mom used to clean the house while teaching me to cue alice cooper vinyl for her, and i can surely remember cueing sabbath and her other hippie crap.

even luckier, dad owned family blues bars so i grew up round them black musicians and you are absolutely right, those early influences as diverse as they can be, create some of the most open minded musicians and music-lovers alive.

music is worth more than life to me.

it is a great thing to be able to unite, even the most different of people.

ive seen everyone from BB King, to Exhorder, Willie Nelson, David Alan Coe, and of course am die hard misfits and danzig fan man. Ive had the lucky experience of even meeting some of my favorite musicians. i moved out here for the music industry but became a webmaster so i can dig as deep into music as i can and not have to worry about a 9-5. there are shows every night, by right i should live somewhere else, but i live here for the music scene.

i cant leave.

music is everything.

all forms.

Just taught my son how to play Smoke on the Water on his guitar, good old one finger style.

"Smoke on the Water" was my first riff, like all children of the 70's. Taught my son "God Save the Queen" for his first.

I taught him the three chords he'll need to play 90% of all rock songs...and told him to develop better dexterity than me and he'll be able to outplay me and join most any band he wants to audition for...he has amazing instincts...I know most parents get a little too excited about their kids' abilities, but his approach is so smooth and he's so much better at picking up songs and playing by ear then I ever was...

The only thing he sometimes has problems with is more complex chord progressions because his hands are so small and his fingers are so short (even on his 3/4 sale guitar).

I keep having to remind myself he's only 9 and to keep playing fun for him so he doesn't lose interest.

Also, anyone who wants to play guitar and hasn't, I highly recomend http://www.guitarvision.com/ My son loves it because he can play the songs at his own speed and increase the tempo as he progresses..hell, I've even improved some of my sloppy ass playing (I was always a better songwriter than musician) using it. It's perfect for beginners and any of you that have kids that are interested in playing music

no one has hands as small as Angus.

an SG will answer his problem.

3 more years his fingers will be so strong.

KEEP HIM FRETTING.

make him stretch, then reward him at 12 with a gibson, even if a special. the neck will be PERFECT.

he will be able to walk the neck better than anyone at his age.

teach him wide, then reward. works.

KEEP HIM FRETTING.

make him stretch, then reward him at 12 with a gibson, even if a special. the neck will be PERFECT.

he will be able to walk the neck better than anyone at his age.

teach him wide, then reward. works.
yeah, I have him do stretching and finger exercises, and still try to make it more of a game and fun rather then feeling like work or a lesson...I also make him play heavier guage strings to build up his finger strength...

one of these days I'll have to bribe Timbo to come over and teach him a few things that are out of my talent range ;-)

supertramp ages badly - to me it's unlistenable now. pap. it was my favorite band as a teenager. i can still listen to Genesis, Alan Parsons but not Supertramp. just sounds so cheesey now to me.
