I'm writing a short story and one of the characters is going to kill himself and will make it look like an accident that is totally believable....

how would you think it'd be done best to accomplish that 'accidental' vibe & maintain credibility?

I don't know much about it, so I might have to just go with the cliff plot...

it's kinda important that this looks very much like an accident for this character as he wants his family to get the life insurance money...so it's gotta be pretty much perfect...

Drowning or some type of untraceable poison. Go down to the ghetto and pay a homie to shoot and rob you. Taking a bath and radio falls in the shower. Walk in front of a bus. Dress like a black or hispanic male and reach in to your inside jacket pocket in front of a cop.

moutain road...plant a couple of big rocks in road (to look like rockslide) he "swerves" to go around them, breaking through the guard rail and plunging to his death....

agreed, that would be the least painful and nicest way to leave...but I think the life insurance policy might not payout for the character's family if they went that route :/...

so far the cliff/car accident seem the most plausible...

Cyanide.

How easily is it obtained? Let's say your character is working in the garage, mixing up some concoction to use as rat poison, and he intentionally spills the cyanide, some of which gets in his mouth.

Cyanide kills in a matter of seconds. Too fast to be painful.
