BROWSERS: CNN Story On Demand For Alternative Browsers
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/interne....ap/index.html
Renewed calls for alternative browsers Friday, July 2, 2004 Posted: 3:52 PM EDT (1952 GMT) Using Internet Explorer is "like playing the lottery," says Johannes B. Ullrich, chief technology officer of SANS Internet Security Center. NEW YORK (AP) -- It's been a bad week for many users of Microsoft Corp.'s nearly ubiquitous Internet Explorer browser. A pair of virus attacks exploiting its vulnerabilities had led security experts to recommend that Web surfers consider such alternatives as Mozilla and Opera. Until Microsoft made a software update available Friday, continuing to use Internet Explorer was "like playing the lottery," said Johannes B. Ullrich, chief technology officer of the nonprofit SANS Internet Security Center. <snip> |

It's all bullshit !!!
No browser can be safe from losers who write viruses and trojans. The only time I've got fucked with trojans is when I used Firefox or Netscape. The only reason I use Netscape or Firefox is because they have the tabs..

I can't believe how people think IE is a piece of crap because of the exploits. Every browser has security issues. The difference is that no one uses the other browsers so idiots can't be bothered exploiting them. If everyone switches to another browser (not like that would ever happen)..you would end up having the same problems.

If Firefox was to become the standard browser most commonly used they would start pumping out virus after virus to target Firefox. It wouldn't solve anything, just change the target of the people who write the viruses.

Wrong. Very wrong even. One of the main problems of IE is allowing ActiveX controls. ActiveX controls are a major security risk. Mozilla does not allow ActiveX controls, and thus the single biggest cause of exploits is gone. Aside from that, Mozilla is open source... meaning a large community tries to exploit it before it is officially released and searches for flaws, and those exploits and flaws are fixed before you ever get to use it. So, there's less chance of large mistakes in versions that get released. |

I've been saying it for months.. anyone that still uses IE for their main browser really needs to at least download Firefox or Mozilla and try it for a few days.

I have active X turned off in IE... and I like choices. I tried firefox because so many people have mentioned it recently but apart from the bookmark and tabbed browser features.. I found it very poor. It's not compatible with many scripted sites and is way too sensitive to poorly coded sites so I have to keep using IE for some stuff even if I do use Firefox.. But worst of all, it renders HTML pages differnt to IE.. much more differnt to IE than netscape 6 did... and anyone who is in business cant afford to view the web differntly to the way 90% of your customers do.. and I dont mean just your sites... you need to see all the web the same way your customers do. By the time this browser works properly IE will have a tabbed browsing version that is better anyway is my bet. *Edit.. PS.. I am still testing it and using to view this board right now... Try using the message post form here with it and then with IE and then try and tell me how great Firefox is! |

I've become a total Opera 7.5.1 lover recently and believe me I'm picky as hell when it comes to software applications.
Read this fascinating article about Opera http://tntluoma.com/opera/lover/7/ Get Opera 7.5.1 here: http://www.opera.com

The main thing I don't like about IE is that so many programs won't install properly unless you let them imbed themselves into the browser. Then there's so many things you can't get with your Windows OS without IE. IE has so much unnecessary proprietary shit attached it's like having another OS all into itself. I remember the good ol' days. A browser was just that, a browser not looking like a console to a Star Trek LCars menu system. |

While Firefox & Co might be faster than IE, the differance the down the road isn't that obvious as it is in the beginning. My 50 cents. |

So if I use firefox or opera then I would get these fucking trojans, spywares, adware, etc. or are they just less of a threat but still infect every once in a while?
