That's a good question. I personally don't care for them. I know that a lot of people flock towards them, but it's not something that I'd recommend doing. In my area you can get full service for $18 per month. I have a cable modem, so I don't have to bother, he he. I'm sure that as long as there's people that are too cheap to pay a monthly fee for the net, which I know there's a hell of a lot of those kinds of people, then there's always gonna be a market for free net service.

Don't think so....I don't see much of NetZero's commercials anymore. Nothing is free in this world..somehow they make their bucks..with all the ads they plug in...

Here in Brazil we had 6 or more free ISPs past year. Now they're 2 or 3. But one of them have lots of good content sites, so they're one of the most visited portals from Brazil. And they're selling the free ISP part to a telephony company, they'll have a % from normal (not internet) calls - due to law reasons. So they'll make money.
But others are fucked, pure and simple.

And mainstream sites with more expenses than income will crash this year. The money people finally wants MONEY return. They was crazy. Now they're less crazy.

I don't use free ISPs, since I have ADSL. But I've used, some were good others sucks. And when I travel to the beach, hey, I can have a local ISP for free :-)

yeP- some of the free isp's are about to go belly up realll soon... i mean think about it.. if someone is too cheap/poor to pay 10-15$ a month for a real ISP then why the hell would they buy stuff off the free ISP's banner ads?

They are history. I think the $9 ISP is the next thing.

I think you can get MSN for $9 a month from Cosco and there are some others cropping up around Northern Cal, even from Fry's.

i hope the Free ISP's like Netzero don't go away... Thats what i have loaded on my laptop to use when i go on trips...

It saved me alot of money when i was in the military.. i was always in some different state, and it was nice to be able to use my laptop from my hotel room for free....

Now i take it when i go on road trips, and it's nice to be able to just change the dialup number...

LMAO!! Well put!!

I used to use NetZero...and Bluelight at one time. GOD, DID THEY SUCK!! Pop-ups, disconnected all the time, had to click on a banner every 5 mins or you would be disconnected. Having problems logging on and freezing up the computer.

NetZero isnt free anymore. I think if you use UNDER 10 hours a month it is free....after that they charge you like 10 cents a min! lol

Some of the free ISP's here turned to $7,50 or $8,50.

Except 1 of them, all other brazilian free isps didn't have banner bar. Totally FREE.

They'll last. But they won't be like the ones that you could get 6 months ago. They'll all limit the hours you can use to like 10 a month, and then they'll fill everything up with crap that annoys you.

Anyways, just pay the 20 buck a month for aol

I know that a great deal of Internet porn is based on the user directly buying a membership or service from an ad or text banner.

What I don't feel is that advertizing in general works that way. My theory is that Internet advertizing is "supposedly" not working because the surfers don't click a banner or put something in their shopping cart.

What these advertizers and their clients are are not accepting is the Internet is JUST LIKE THE OTHER MEDIUMS of print, television and radio. I think they actually believe that they can generate directs sales from their ads.

How many times have you seen a commercial on TV and gone immediately out da house and bought da thing?

Advertizing is a basically passive tool. It builds name recognition, informs the buyer and (somewhat recently) allows comparison between products. But never forget, ADVERTIZING WORKS.

The Internet should be set up like the major television networks: Free programming and a bunch of ads. In other words, free ISPs that are supported by advetizing.

Sure, there should be pay services just like cable. But I think these online services that are changing their business models from a FREE service supported by ads to a paid subscription service are making a grave mistake. People won't pay for it just like they don't click on the ads.

B2B is a good idea, but it's not a force yet. There are a few businesses making green off of B2B and we are in one of the precious few.

blah, blah, blah

tit, you gave me an idea. I'm going to start my first free cable service.

You get a top notch channels like mtv and hbo for free, but you have to have little advertisements running at the bottom of the screens at all time

Suicide is preferable to AOL, MSN and the like. Those services are such a joke! 2 hour mandatory boots, paying for the same services such as news etc that are free on a million sites, Getting censored by so called spam filters... Too much BS.

We've used free dialups at times when we needed more computers connected at the same time. Will they stick aound? Probably, once someone figures out how to market them right. The big freebies did just like the online businesses that failed or cut way back. Too big too fast and the income from the ads wouldn't cover their costs. Just like any new form of advertising, the first monies are crazy amounts but then it drops back off. They didn't look at history and screwed themselves. Grow slow and steady and always make sure the bottom line is black and not the red that they all went in to within the first months of trying to startup.
