For those who actually think there's going to be a military draft soon...
There is no problem with meeting enlistment goals. In fact, the truth is that they are actually above their goals.
The media just loves these draft stories since it gets people listening to them. They can do an entire story on how the draft may be needed, and then spend 5 seconds at the end on why it's really not necessary. http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/05/19/mil....ap/index.html "Statistics through 2003 show all branches hitting annual targets, with no dramatic spikes. In fiscal year 2003, the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force brought in 184,879 recruits to active duty, exceeding the objective by more than 500." "And despite the bloodshed, soldiers are re-enlisting at rates that exceed retention goals, according to the Pentagon." |

Why then are they trying to push bills thru congress? I can't speak to whether or not they'll pass, just wondered. And besides, if I read correctly, this only activates the draft system, but does not actually mean it will be used. True?

I don't believe it..
because: there are more army/navy/airforce/marines/reserves/etc enlistment commercials on TV than ever before. It seems like every break now. You just don't spend that much money and push that hard if you already have more people than you need. or perhaps those "annual targets" were set before this Iraq disaster. (but that doesn't mean there will be a draft... there won't.. it would be political suicide.) |

The sites making a huge deal out of these bills are all extreme left wing sites who are making them out to be something they are not. Taking their drivel as truth would be like listening to extreme consirvative sites.
Just because you are liberal doesn't mean you have to believe the liberals wearing tin foil hats. I've just done some research on these two bills, and this 2005 draft speculation is just comical. I was going to write about it here, but snopes doesn't do a bad job themselves... http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/draft.asp |

OOPS! Here's what the draft idiots are not telling you...
On Capitol Hill, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., has introduced a bill that would reinstate the draft. The legislation has minimal support with only 13 House lawmakers signing on as co-sponsors. A corresponding bill in the Senate introduced by Sen. Fritz Hollings, the outgoing South Carolina Democrat, has no co-sponsors. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/nation...3_draft13.html |
