IP Address Help

My hosting company changed their firewall rules, so I can no longer log in via SSH unless I add my IP address to their router which authorizes my access. I guess there is a new exploit so they wanted to limit SSH access.

So i go to websites like:
http://www.whatismyip.com
and every website I check gives me an IP address (for example):
678.254.194.236

So I gave the hosting company the IP address. I still could not log in via SSH. The tech support guy watches me try to log in and according to him my IP address is completely different (for example):
676.454.195.212

Why are the IP addresses different? Is there a program or anyother way to find out this secondary IP address? I bought a script, and the people are trying to install it. For the past week they have not been able to log into my server via SSH, so they cant install it. So im guessing they too gave the wrong IP address and im trying to find a way to get their correct #.

Your ISP might be using transparent proxy'ing

Hi,

I've had exactly the same problem with my hosting company (ISPrime). What is happening is that your Internet Sevice Provider company is dynamically allocating you a different IP address each time you connect to the internet. You will have to contact your ISP and either ask them to give you a fixed IP address or to tell you the IP address range you may be allocated and give that to your hosting company so they can allow that address range. My ISP refused to do this though, so I'm without SSH at the moment!

Hope that helps.

I don't think he's talking about a Dynamic vs. Static problem. Dynamic IP's are only an issue when you re-connect to your session (Most likely a PPPoE/PPPoA session). From his description, he is connected and gets his IP from the site, then tries to connect to the server and the Hosting Company see's a different IP.

This is the result of Transparent Proxy'ing done on Port 80, but your real IP shows on Port 22.

Check your IP yourself by going into DOS and doing ipconfig/all (Windows 2000/XP).

You also might have a NAT'd IP, so if your PC is showing a 10.x.x.x or 172.16.x.x thru 172.31.x.x or 192.168.x.x - then you're NAT'd out of the ISP and there isn't much you can do other then setting up a SSH-BNC.

2 things then - do you have a home router?

Is this DSL or Cable? Some cable providers now use the CableHome spec which has an RG-Modem with a built in router.

I guess I could get the ISPRIME support on ICQ and the Script Installer guy on ICQ at the same time.

I'll have the guy try to log in and fail. But ill have the Isprime guy watching as he fails, and then he'll be able to watch for the correct IP address.

He'll then add that IP address to the router and that should give the installer a window to log in and install the script... Right?

In all theory, yes

If the Hosting company is blocking SSH at the router/firewall - you won't see the connection attempts on the server - so no, you cannot find the IPs of people trying to login.
