How do you manage your employees?

How do those of you with employees manage them all? Whether one or 50, what methods do you use to effectively communicate and track progress on tasks, etc?

For example...

If you have one or more people, and let's sat they are spread out over several states, and you need to delegate a task or make sure something critical (and by critical I mean for the completion of say a project but not necessarily mission critical) is done, how do you present the task, monitor it's progress, and follow up after completion?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Sometimes a whip, but more often than not a good paddle does the job

Why did you even bother to respond with this? Obviously companies manage, I am asking HOW they manage. I think my example spelled it out pretty clearly what I was asking.

OK, but what if they are no within kicking reach?

I am looking for processes more than actions I guess.

OK, as far as a process, I see this as an option. A BBQ with beer while brainstorming or discussing things is a good way of opening people up to thier ideas in a relaxed atmosphere.

ahhh remote employee control...

try this.

furnish each remote employee with a web cam and a cu-seeme client. web cams are cheap 19$ on ebay.

set up a private, password protected, cu-seeme reflector and have group business meetings 2-3 times a day. that way you can see and talk to all of them at once or one at a time.

and if they still aren't getting the job done you can fire them face to face videoly speaking.

for more information on cu-seeme look here.

Your either new as an employer or your not getting better production
out of the man-power you already have.

Sure there are always a few in the crowd who take pride in their work
and check their ego/vanity at the door, but the majority need to be
watched over and constantly directed.

The key to utmost productivity is learning each employees strengths
and utilize each for what they are better designed to accomplish.

Simply hiring people and letting everyone be a self starter will cost
you too much in time and money. Employees need to feel their job
is always something that they may lose and that an extra effort on
their part is something they may contribute to possible keep them
from getting the axe.

You can't be everyone's friend and an employer at the same time.
You have to tend your investment with an iron fist and if you want
to be friends with employees then your living in a fictional Utopia.

I would have to disagree with wilbur. Authoritarian management style will work to a certain extent but you will never be able to take advantage of your employee's creativity or have optimal productivity. If your employees feels as if they have they watch their ass everyday, why would they watch out for the companys bottom line? they will do enough just to get by.

First it should start with hiring quality people. I would organize them into teams with a designated team leader that can switch over time. Recognize what their strengths and weaknesses are. Give them the resources to do their job and let them do it without watching them like a hawk. Being in a team and having the autonomy to make their own decisions will make them feel like they can actually make a change-empowerment. In the end thats what matters. The management style that wilbur suggest might work with very small companies but it is very inefficient and is being phased out by many companies as the new shift is towards empowerment..

I'm a big follow of demings and obviously there are other things u can consider too like incentives and what not. Basically the idea is to achieve better productivity by allowing people to feel like they can make a difference and have a say in the company's operations.

Make sure you don't waste time with too many business meetings. Set a clear agenda on what to addresse for each meeting and do not get sidetracked.
