Terror in London

Just got back from a business trip, I spent three days in London.

I came from there though on this visit I saw some mad things that really brought home some shit.

On the street were guys with machine guns, 100's of police who were not wearing the regular black unifiorms, this was high profile this is something I have never seen in the UK ever.

Buildings had their information boards and names blanked out all the anti ram raid gear was set out.

Any how I decided to aviod the tube after coming up the stairs to be greated by the news paper stands headline..

'London Mass Evacution Plan' - Get me back to north quick

yeah..there is such an armed police presence in central London these days . Especially when you consider that normal cops don't even carry guns. So, when you see guys when with machine guns walking around Leicester Square it does cause you to sit up and take notice.

I still use the tube..the papers just use it to freak people out but I have made the choice not to get out of the tube at places like Goodge Street station which have elevators instead of escalators..i just have a hunch they would the the targets.

Ive been away from London for 8 years, after living there for about 15 ....

Every so often I feel that I should go back.... but it scares me

Being in NZ is like being on another planet..... Its a "western" country, but somehow seems protected from all this shit. Its like the rest of the world was, a long time ago.

I think London would freak me out these days..... I have to reach for the Xanax just thinking about getting a Tube in rush hour

Say goodbye to the good ole days folks.

It will never be like that again. I have no doubt in my mind that George Orwell's predictions will come to pass. We'll all be required to have bar codes or something like that on our person that will record our every move, transaction, etc. into a giant database. We will be watched everywhere we go day and night.
The system will know where we are and who we are with all the time.

Free movement from place to place as we know it now will be a thing of the past.

another thing which was really hard hitting also was the fact McDonnalds has sealed their bins.

Despite all the issues during other terror threats MD's never sealed their bins.

Is it like this is all the capital cities?

I've been in London for 8 and a bit years and bins have pretty much always been closed up in Central London. Of course, I move here right before the Manchester bombing and right after the most recent Canary Warf one.

Really how is this any different than it's been for thousands of years. Privacy, control and power is an illusion. Here and there you can slip between the cracks but consider yourself under surveillance as you've been since you were born, and your parents before you.

Here's just the latest excuse to keep the mice in the labyrinth

Its weird..I went to russia some months ago and people were very friendly and there was no problems getting in to the country. But when I go to the US they take pictures of me, they want my fingerprints, asking stupid questions and theres people with mashineguns everywhere..its like somehow "the west" has turned into "the east" and vice versa The western europe and the US is what russia was back in the old days..

not regular beat cops no..they can request armed back up. Places like airports have the armed squads. They haven't needed it before. That is why seeing cops in such numbers walking around with machine guns is a culture shock.

Sorry Sarah but thats one of the biggest bullshit things I ever heard. Police don't need guns? What about the police officer who was killed when he pulled over a car? If he had a gun it would be drawn and the person in the car might have thought again about pulling the trigger. I think they do need guns. If all police officers had guns then I reckon things wouldn't be as out of control in places such as London, Glasgow and Liverpool to name a few.

If I had my way, all Police officers would carry guns!

ah, I wasn't putting my opinion into that..yeah, I think that especially in central London they should be armed. Iwas just saying what the reasoning given had been. However, remember the guy that was shot dead by police when they thought the table leg he had was a gun? That is the downside.

I've lived in central London for all of my 55 years and the reason today for armed police placed in important places is due to terrorist threats. Street rubbish bins were removed or sealed in central London after the bombing of Selfridges in the 80's.

The UK is the only place in the world where the regular police force are unarmed. London is still one of the safest cities in the world to visit. The major problem here is the price of smokes at around US$8.30 + a pack of 20 and of course gas which is about the same for an imperial gallon which is larger than the US gallon..

Come to the UK and taste our superb food.. We have Burger Kings, Pizza Huts and even McDonalds these days ... LOL

This is the last thing i need to read now. My 17year old (step) daughter is going there at the end of this week for a month to visit with her grandma...her mom is going with her..but she is about a half wit like her mom. I am glad my girl has serious common sense, but i am still going to be worried till she gets her ass back home

fuck

If all police officers had guns then I reckon things wouldn't be as out of control in places such as London, Glasgow and Liverpool to name a few.

If I had my way, all Police officers would carry guns!
if the police carry guns it forces more of the crooks to carry them too.

i doubt police in other countries draw guns just to pull a car over for a general traffic stop, so i doubt it would have saved the policeman you mention. and giving police guns makes them judge, jury and executioner and i know plenty of police that are complete idiots and not fit to carry a water pistol. if guns are needed for a certain situation they can call in properly trained backup.

and you say that it would make places like london, glasgow and liverpool less out of control. I'm sure it's a lot less out of control in parts of america where they do carry guns.
