This system has hardware that does not support USB

WTF does that mean, there are USB ports on the back, it is a .... checking for brand as it is my g/f's ...

again WTF is this: it is a
x86 Family 6, model 6, Stepping 5
AT/AT Compatible

NEVER ever heard of that shit. Is that like Eastern European, pre 1990 stuff?

I'm starting to wonder how it even runs w2k now.

Ah, I read up. I know what that means now, it is just way of how to keep track of Intel Chipsets.

But still no USB though.

I would make sure you have the latest and greatest BIOS updates installed before getting too far into it...

8 out of 10 machines I've dealt with in the past (with usb problems) have had to have thier bios flashed for any happiness...

Exactly, and this one is ancient, look here:

BIOS Date: 07/15/95
BIOS Type: American Megatrends
BIOS ID: 62-1025-009999-00101111-071595-000000-M741LMRT
OEM Sign-On: Release 10/25/1999S
Chipset: SiS 620 rev 2
Superio: ITE 8661/SiS 6801 rev 6 found at port 279h
OS: Win2000
CPU: Intel Celeron 466 Mhz MAX: 333 Mhz
BIOS ROM In Socket: Yes
BIOS ROM Size: 256K

So how does updating the bios work without not being able to start the pc ever again?

That's a PCChips motherboard. Some of the cheapest crap ever to
be put in the market. PCChips caught so much flack they renamed
the company to ECS.

Here is the bios flash file for that M741LMRT
http://www.amptron.com/bios/M741LMRT...RT-010221S.exe

Check in the bios after for "enable usb".

Yeah, I bet it is crap. My gf bought it on a pc fair, never do that shit

In any case, I already changed the bios settings and I am looking to see if it works now. USB was simply DISABLED. I'm a dumbass, I upgraded w2k and everything, oh well .... good thing I am only using that pc as a server and msn / webcam box.

Then if USB Controllers show up in Device Manager your good to go.
If there are still probs then flash that hunk-o-junk and that should help.

Hopefully that *.exe I pointed to is a compression and has the flash utility
with it.

Thanks.

The devide is there, but with "!", it cannot start (error 10). Most likely an upgrade is needed, so can you tell me what to do with the .rom/.exe that are in the file you just gave?
Should I run the hahahahahahaha file or the rom file somewhere?

I'm out for now, but love to get styarted again when I am back.

You want to go to the site of the device manufacturer and download the
latest drivers. Install them if it has a setup.exe and if not then decompress
the drivers to a folder and then remove the "!" driver from Device Manager
then reboot.

Hopefully you have PnP=Yes in the bios and WindowsXX will
popup during the boot and then point to the folder where you decompressed
the drivers.

ok, i got it partially fixed.

I have it working, but every time I restart the pc, the usb port is not working and I have to reinstall the driver.

How do I at least upgrade that bios, I pressed the .exe file in hahahahahahas and i still have the old version. Should I do anything with that .com file that is in the zip too?

Any other suggestions?

You need two floppy disks.

One you boot the computer with. Use this bootme.exe to make a
WindowsME boot disk
http://www.24by7.ca/files/bootme.exe
Put a floppy in the drive and click on bootme.exe and it will
make a WindowsME boot disk. WindowsME has
more CD-ROM drivers than a Windows98 boot disk.
Quote:

I think you mean the 010221s.ROM file not *.COM file.

010221s.rom = the flash ROM
AMINF325.EXE = the program that makes the flash happen

This is what the second floppy disk is for, you put
010221s.rom and AMINF325.EXE on the second floppy disk.
  1. You boot with the WindowsME boot floppy
  2. Once booted to the boot floppy you remove the boot floppy
and put in the flash floppy
  3. Then you type aminf325 010221s.rom and hit enter
  4. Wait for the flash to complete and the floppy drive light to go out
then remove the flash floppy and reboot

Wilber, that almost makes sense even to me, a sysadmin nono.

However, this is for a Win2000 box, does the ME bootdisk work for that too?

If so, I'm gonna start playing.

When booting from a floppy or CD it doesn't matter what O/S is
installed on the hard drive, the machine is booting from the floppy
and all info for booting comes from the floppy and the bios chip
on the motherboard.

You have to make sure in your bios that the floppy disk (A:) is the
first boot device in "boot priority". Set bios boot priority to
A,CD-ROM,C
or some bios say
Floppy, CD-ROM, C
You have to have the floppy set as first boot device before a comp
will read it to boot when inserted into the floppy drive. Once the flash
is complete and you've removed the floppy and rebooted then since
your running Windows 2000 you should reset the
bios boot priority to
CD-ROM,C,A
or
CD-ROM,C,Floppy

For Windows XP and Windows 2000 you need
the CD-ROM as first boot device because when your O/S fucks up
you need to boot from the O/S CD to be able to run repair functions
like the recovery console and O/S repair installs ect.

That way if your Windows XP/2000 ever fucks up you
just insert the O/S CD and reboot and the comp will automatically show
you a prompt on the boot up screen saying
To boot from CD press any key and 5 dots will count off
and you have to press a key on the keyboard before the fifth dot displays
otherwise the comp will just go on booting from the hard drive.

Interesting .. I did exactly what you told me to do:
After the install/patch the pc restarted itself so I removed the floppy. Tried to press DEL to set the bios to the sequence you advised, but now I have this error on my screen:
CMOS Settings wrong
CMOS Checksum bad

F1 to Run Setup
F2 to load default values and continue.

Any advise?

I hope you didn't pull that floppy out while the computer
was restarting, that would fuck up the hard drive.

Push F2
what happens?

I don't know what "crunching ones and zeros" means.
IS win2k booting? If not...

Did you reset the bios boot priority to boot from CD?
If not do so and boot from the win2k CD.

When the CD finishes booting
  1. press "R" for recovery console
  2. then select "1" for your win2k operating system
  3. then type your admin password

You'll be at the dos prompt. Type chkdsk /r
That will take awhile, let it finish then remove the CD
and boot to the bios setup and go straight to
Save and Exit settings and press "Y"
to save and exit.

If that fails to help just boot with the WindowsME
boot disk again and flash the bios again with the other floppy.
When the flash finishes and automatically reboots the
comp DO NOT remove the floppy, let the system boot
to the WindowsME boot disk again and when it's
at the dos prompt (A:>_) then remove the floppy and reboot.

Okay .. this took forever. Last question (hopefully):

The crunching is over and the pc just restarted itself again, I hit DEL and am in BIOS now.

Set 1st boot to CDROM, but as a second, what to use?
scsi, IDE-0, ide-1 or ide-2?

I think after that I'm all set.

Ignore the bastard posters.
It doesn't matter how many copies of win2k you have, it's
the serial number that's important.

That long spin you had on the hard drive means the bitmap
is fucked up. Pullin' that floppy while the comp was workin'
is a bad thing to do.

When you get your win2k CD back run that "chkdsk /r" command
and all will be good after.

Run it before you go to bed and it should be done in the morning.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to see if you can pick up a 17Gb
or a bit smaller hard drive for that comp and install win2k on
that hard drive. The one your using is probably getting ready
to take a shit.

hehe, okay. Maybe it took that long because w2k was doing the chkdsk /r itself?

I actually bought a cool Maxtor OneTouch w/firewire yesterday. Ultra cool (but not really relevant here).

As far as the old box goes, it seems to run just well now. USB ports are there and everything runs as good as possible for a pc of that speed.

Next thing on the list ... get a website with that damn cam running. Looking for software now.

Lots of thanks for the help, i appreciate it.

Good news and your welcome.

Next thing to watch out for is the CMOS battery dying.
If you bootup one day and it says "Invalid disk" then
you have to pull the CMOS battery and get a new one
for $5.00

When you pull it the bios will go back to default so when
you put the new one in you'll have to make a B-line to
the bios and set the boot priority and turn the USB back
on plus any other settings you may have made.
