IF the usa had a flat tax and got rid of emminant domain to steal your property I would say yes to the us.

Having traveled to many countries I have not felt truely free unless you are very wealthy.

Wealth and having political influence brings more freedoms than the normal population.

Switzerland?

Battuss, you are only 27y/o....when you are in your 40's like me, come talk to me and educate me on life's experiences. As far as I'm concerned, you are still wet behind the ears and couldn't enlighten me in any way, shape or form.

While you are still walking there, I have been there and back several times.

I think a pre-requisite to posting in this thread ought to be that you have actually visited other countries than your own.

in florida - people can ride motorcycles without a helmet but i can get a ticket for driving without a fucking seatbelt. the us puts junkies in jail, in holland they focus more on rehabilitation. it has a lot more to do with the smoking weed and hookers - many european countries are light years ahead of america in many ways

i think australia is pretty good, probably not the most free, but thats not always a bad thing, ie we are not free to carry semi automatic weapons around, i consider this a plus.

There are a few censorship laws that piss me off, but they dont apply to the whole country, just to some of that states

Arghhh ok 1 last post while i wait for Alex.

You are really comparing your view on freedom with mine?

Lets see:

You: Never been outside the US.

Me: Been to the US several times, in several cities in several states plus at least 10 other countries in the world.

Ok...before you post again read this over and over again till you get the hint.

UK citizens aren't free to own handguns, but Americans aren't free to travel to Cuba. Does this balance out?

Discuss.

The United States has a very strong Constitutional protection of free speech, but it's useless if someone like Bush appoints activist right wing Supreme Court justices who re-interpret the constitution to suit their political goals.

Just free to knife you to death instead then, perhaps you can challenge the burglar to a dual - however my point is you are not "free" to the decision of owning a handgun, you are told you can not own one, is anyone truely free? there is laws to prohibit lots of things, laws made by the rich, protection for the rich etc. it's not who is the most free, it's who's government does not restrict the freedom of it's citizens the most?

Last I heard, it was only certain handguns that are illegal in Australia, not all handguns.

You are missing my point.

We don't need them. It's a freedom the Australian people don't want.

As a consequence we are largely free from gun violence. You are not.

We've simply traded one freedom for another.

All handguns are banned.

You can trade freedom? was the "freedom" of not owning a hand gun put to a poplar vote, or was it made into law, by the government?

This whole gun thing is a ghey argument anyway.

You're not free to murder anyone or steal stuff either.

There's somethings that you're just not free to do.

Move on already.

The US has guns. Australia doesn't.
Australia has kangaroo riding. The US doesn't.

Agreed? Ok, great... next topic?

In They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45, Milton Mayer wrote about how the German people kept believing they were still free while the Nazis were tightening their control and extending their power over every facet of life. At first people refused to see the obvious, because the infringements on their freedom were coming in small steps. Each of those small steps, on its own, seemed to be no big deal, nothing to rebel against. But by the time you could no longer ignore the big picture, it was too late.

So you have no problem sacrificing one freedom so long as you receive another freedom?

Interesting. Cool.

It was made into law by the government about 8 years ago and has wide popular support.

As a result, rates of gun violence have fallen to virtually zero.

In 2001, the rate of murder by firearm was 0.3 persons per 100,000.

We have traded the freedom to own a handgun for freedom from gun violence.

If the government decides it needs more troops to build and maintain its empire, can you refuse to go if it calls for you? Will they leave you alone if you tell them you won?t kill and die for them? Can you simply ignore the draft, without consequence?
