There's nothing on Lana'i or Moloka'i and the Big Island doesn't interest me at all. I took a mini-vacation there last year, and yeah, the resort was nice, but still, nothing but lava for as far as the eye could see, and no beach. Maui is more relaxed. We don't have freeways or skyscrapers or the local bad boy attitudes like O'ahu. Everyone here is friendly. It's so relaxed that when the celebs come to stay here right down the street at the Grand Wailea or the Fairmont Kea Lani, nobody bothers them. And that's why they come here. To get away and relax and have no one hounding them for autographs and interviews and shit. Britney Spears goes to the same nail salon my girlfriend goes to. We did a purchase loan on another house here for Sammy Hagar. Oprah is building a house here, Kris Kristoferson has a house up on the volcano, Kelsey Grammer (sp?) has a home here, Nick Cage comes here quite a bit, Helen Hunt, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Anthony Hopkins, etc.... and no one bothers them. That's a place where I want to live. Where no one bothers me. (granted I'm not a celeb, but you know what I mean) It's more expensive here, and there are far less stores to choose from..... I have to order nearly everything online.... but everywhere has it's cons.... I think the pros of Maui far outweight the cons. I like living right next to the beach here in Wailea. The area is beautiful. I can see the ocean from my deck, and walk to it in a minute. I couldn't do that on O'ahu. Just a few of the reasons I love Maui.

oops, I forgot.... no, there isn;t much nightlife here. There is some though.... if you want to party, you can find it. But that's okay with me because I don't really like to party anymore. I don't enjoy clubs and that whole scene, and so I don't miss it at all.

Electricity is freaking ridiculous. Hitting an average of around $220 per month. That just running the basics: Refrigerator, washer, dryer, computers, and tv. Not running the ACs or anything else. The water heater is solar, so that isn't even included.

but living here also has other essential expenses that other places may not.
Regular exterminator service: A must. It's the tropics. If you don't have an extermintor visit regularly, you will have roaches, rats, spiders, scorpions, ants, and centipedes. If you own a house, you need automatic (or manual) sprinklers, or the sun will kill your lawn and trees and plants in a week. If you have coconut trees, (like I do) you need the coconuts chopped out every six months, or they will start falling and damaging shit and killing people if they land on them. Wet gear: No point living in the tropics if you don't have some boards, snorkel gear, etc. Sunscreen: I buy it in bulk. and the list goes on.

The bottom line to all of this is, it all comes down to what you place value on.
One person may see a $3000 set of golf clubs as a necessity, where another person will see it as a total waste of money. You can live in South Dakota in a house for probably $50k, and spend the rest of your cash on whores, clubbin', spinners for your pimp ass ride, fancy fuckin' shirts with flames on them, and big pimp hats with 24" feathers in them. If that's what you value, then that's what you should do. Personally, my priorities are on the idea that you should live where you are most happy. Yes, it's expensive as hell to live here. But I can't even imagine living anywhere else anymore. I love the ocean, I love the island, I love the life, I love it all. And I will most likely live the rest of my natural life here. I don't care about appearing like some kind of pimp, I don't care about fancy expensive clothes, I don't care about clubbing or impressing the hoes, I detest jewelry..... I am truly home. And I am happy. Now if I could somehow beat this bipolar insanity shit, life would be grand.

When we moved here we paid 2x the price of our Phoenix house for a house that's 1/2 the size & 2x as old. ...but we're living in paradise right across the street from the beach. Can't beat it. |
